SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager Valuable Features

Its main functionality is highly beneficial as it centralizes the management of configuration items across the network. For instance, if you need to modify something like a VLAN name, Network Configuration Manager enables you to propagate that change across a wide range of devices without the need to individually log in to each one for the update.

The feature of NCM that I consider most critical for our network operations is likely the archive function. This feature retains configurations on file, which proves invaluable when there's a network change requiring a rollback to a previous configuration. Having an archive of older configurations readily available is immensely beneficial in such scenarios.

The most valuable feature for me is the network configuration piece itself. It helps us to make sure that all the changes in the environment are automatically reflected.

Changes on network administrators ideally go through proper change management approval processes in SolarWinds. However, suppose changes are made accidentally and result in a network outage. In that case, NCM allows administrators to log in and identify who made the changes on the devices that led to the outage.

Configuration refers to the specific settings and options that determine how a device or system behaves. It can include things, such as network settings, security settings, and other options that are specific to the device or system in question. One of the most valuable features of the solution was its ability to track and monitor changes to the configuration of devices on a network. This can be useful for troubleshooting and identifying potential issues. By keeping track of who made changes to the configuration and when it can be easier to determine the cause of any problems that may arise.

The most valuable Real-time fault detection is beneficial as it enables the identification of changes made to a device's configuration through the SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager. This makes it easy to pinpoint which configurations were added or removed, potentially causing network issues. Such changes are saved in logs for future reference.

The scanning features have proven to be highly valuable, particularly due to the comprehensive information they provide. Previously, we only received basic up and down status notifications, but now we're gaining deeper insights. We can now identify the types of addresses and devices connected to our portal switches, a level of detail we had never accessed before.

When considering network management tasks, I find certain features particularly beneficial. For instance, the mapping functionality is extremely valuable. Being able to create detailed maps and drill down into specific areas is essential for our operations. This capability enables us to filter alarms and organize different maps, providing us with a comprehensive overview. It effectively addresses our needs in problem identification and resolution.

The product is simple. Sometimes it gets difficult to remember the standard we have to keep for our configuration. When you have new devices or even critical issues in your network, you have to review the configuration. Also, it acts as evidence if the change made by someone causes a problem. The solution helps us find who made the configuration and which command changed it. You can also download and upload the configuration in one click without entering the command line interface.

The solution's view is very nice, and they have a great customized dashboard. You can add the maps, import any pictures you need, and see all the information in the dashboard. Also, the solution is simple from the management side because, for each menu, you can see the same structure.

NCM is a very good tool. We can use it to compare configurations, for example, and download configurations to see whether something is running configurations. It is good for managing Cisco devices and managing their configurations.

It is pretty straightforward to set up.

The solution is stable.

It is scalable.

The feature that I really enjoy is the ability to script changes across all of your devices.

For example, if you wanted to change the administrator password for all of your Cisco devices, you would simply put that config change in one window on the NCM, and with a push of a button, it sends it across to all the devices on your network.

It allows us to manage backups in big companies. It is also useful in managing configuration changes.

SolarWinds is currently in the process of a strategic change. They recognized some of the issues they had and are changing the way that they are delivering their software on-premises and on the cloud. You will be able to benefit from these changes sometime in 2023/2024.

Since the customer is the primary user, they'd have a better idea of the best features.

Compared to other vendors, like NetBrain, managing the solution is easy. They made it very user-friendly.
