We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It's a very performance-intensive, brilliant storage system, and I always recommend it to customers based on its benefits, performance, and scalability.""The solution is pretty stable.""Without any extra costs, I was able to provide a redundant environment.""Red Hat Ceph Storage is a reliable solution, it works well.""Most of the features are beneficial and one does not stand out above the rest.""What I found most valuable from Red Hat Ceph Storage is integration because if you are talking about a solution that consists purely of Red Hat products, this is where integration benefits come in. In particular, Red Hat Ceph Storage becomes a single solution for managing the entire environment in terms of the container or the infrastructure, or the worker nodes because it all comes from a single plug.""We use the solution for cloud storage.""We have not encountered any stability issues for the product."

"I like StarWind's high availability. The failover is almost immediate, so the end users have no idea the guest VM moved at all. We can failover all guest VMs onto a single hypervisor, place it into maintenance mode, install updates, and reboot a hypervisor all during the daytime and remotely, with confidence the process will be successful.""The available GUI is excellent for monitoring and operating the system in an easy and direct way.""They offer top-tier support.""With an uptime of 384 days, StarWind has improved overall server reliability.""The fact that the solution is vendor-agnostic allows it to be used with any virtualization vendor while remaining a powerful abstraction over storage.""StarWind allows us to move virtual machines from one physical host to another, which greatly reduces the downtime required for maintenance.""Their support staff is comprised of true experts who can also communicate clearly.""When using new (warranty) servers, you can forget about the storage service for several years. The users will not even notice the failure of two servers out of three."

"The speed of the storage solution also allows us to provide service to applications that are very I/O intensive.""Performance, redundancy, scalability and cost-effectiveness. StorPool delivers superbly in all of these areas.""With StorPool we were able to build live failover on top of our LXC infrastructure. This allows us both to live-migrate containers between compute nodes without any downtime and, in case of an entire node suffering any type of failure, we can bring all containers back online within a minute on a spare compute node.""The two 10GE networks provide redundancy and increased performance as they serve as two separate networks doubling the throughput and doing multipathing and load balancing. We now have a high performance shared storage system which enables us to run on private cloud. Our previous system used bare-metal hardware, which provided high performance but inflexible management. Now we have best of both worlds, SSD-class performance with flexibility of a private cloud system.""The team behind it was very engaged and had the skills and ability to support a service provider.""Creating snapshots within seconds for big disks has helped our different migration projects since it allows us to perform them in a short period of time."

Cons
"We have encountered slight integration issues.""The storage capacity of the solution can be improved.""Routing around slow hardware.""It needs a better UI for easier installation and management.""I have encountered issues with stability when replication factor was not 3, which is the default and recommended value. Go below 3 and problems will arise.""If you use for any other solution like other Kubernetes solutions, it's not very suitable.""Ceph does not deal very well with, or takes a long time to recover from, certain kinds of network failures and individual storage node failures.""An area for improvement would be that it's pretty difficult to manage synchronous replication over multiple regions."

More Red Hat Ceph Storage Cons →

"An update caused a syncing issue and it took over a month to resolve it""The system failovers properly on its own without too much worry.""StarWind Virtual SAN could benefit from better integration with other tools and technologies, such as backup and disaster recovery solutions.""I would like to see an extensive set of cmdlets that could allow for easier automation as well as status management.""I would like to see more user-friendly dashboards in future versions.""We don't really have any issues with this product.""An extended trial period would serve as a way to get clean insights into the technology's adaptability and alignment with their specific needs before committing to long-term integration.""The product can include a more simple way of synchronization after a forced shutdown as the current process has a few more steps to check that hosts have synchronized and this can be automated."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"At times we need to check the disks and do some minor operations. A friendlier user interface would be useful in such cases.""Live and historical performance statistics would be useful, though my understanding is that this is on the way in a future release.""Monitoring and statistics UI is a bit clumsy.""I have personally met with multiple Storpool engineers and spoke about different options and features. There are too many features that we don't know or use yet. My recommendation would be to promote the new features and give users different examples of how they can be used and how we can benefit from them.""It would be good if, with next releases, StorPool provide a better GUI for monitoring and statistics. This would make our experience even better and complete.""he only place we feel they could improve is the time it takes to bring new features to production."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The other big advantage is that Ceph is free software. Compared to traditional SAN based storage, it is very economical."
  • "There is no cost for software."
  • "Most of time, you can get Ceph with the OpenStack solution in a subscription as a bundle."
  • "We never used the paid support."
  • "If you can afford a product like Red Hat Ceph Storage then go for it. If you cannot, then you need to test Ceph and get your hands dirty."
  • "The price of this product isn't high."
  • "The price of Red Hat Ceph Storage is reasonable."
  • "The operational overhead is higher compared to Azure because we own the hardware."
  • More Red Hat Ceph Storage Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "It provides us with a significant reduction in TCO due to their pay-as-you-grow licensing model, which means we don’t have to pay upfront for hardware and licensing for capacity thStorPoolat we don’t yet need to use."
  • "StorPool's pricing and licensing model is very transparent. As always, one has to due his due diligence when choosing a product like distributed storage solutions."
  • "StorPool software is cost-effective and gives us a pricing advantage over our competitors."
