We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The payment function for applications is good.""The product offers very good security.""This product is definitely scalable.""Offers good security and filtering.""One of the nice things about FortiGate is that it can be deployed on the cloud or on-premises. You can actually do both. That's the biggest reason why I stick with this solution as opposed to something like Cisco Meraki. Another nice thing is that I can log directly into a FortiGate or get to it through their FortiCloud access products. They're pretty reliable and consistent. One of the reasons why I started using the product was their single pane of management. I can deploy their line of firewalls in conjunction with their switching and access points, and I can manage the entire network from one interface. I don't have to log into one interface for the firewall, another one for the access points, and another one for the switches. These firewalls have access point controller functionality built right into the system, so I don't even have to purchase additional devices to manage them.""Whenever we raise a complaint with FortiGate, their response and resolution times are minimal.""It is useful for protecting and segregating the internal networks from the internet. Most of our customers also use the FortiGate client to connect to their offices by using the VPN client, and of course, they usually activate the antivirus, deep inspection, and intrusion prevention services. They are also using it for web filtering and implementing various policies dealing with forwardings, NAT, etc.""We purchased Fortinet because of the pricing, its functionality, because it met our requirements, and the total cost of ownership over five years was quite reasonable. In the market, Fortinet is rated quite well."

"The firewalling feature and the VPN functionality are excellent.""The solution is easy to use. I like the monitoring the most.""The scalability is very good.""It filters unwanted traffic.""Everything can be managed from a single dashboard nowadays.""Making configuring numerous layers of security policies easy to use was always one of the things I liked most about their firewall solution.""It has various features, like Threat Prevention and Antivirus. It is easier to use and have knowledge of a single device rather than multiple devices/technologies when doing an installation. It is also easy to use because of having Antivirus and Threat Prevention features within the same firewall.""Now we can add application signature in the same rule base & don't have to create a different policy for that."

More Check Point NGFW Pros →

"The authentication part is seamless and easy for people.""Juniper is more flexible with the commit check and the commit confirmed command. The design of the forwarding and contract plan in the operating system is very important for the performance when we have very big traffic.""This solution works well. Their switches and firewall are good.""The tool's most valuable features are routing features and service quality.""It is easy for me to go in and update settings, make changes, or add/remove rules or security.""The technical support services are excellent.""The pricing is reasonable.""The product's scalability is good, and my company has 150 users."

Cons
"The visibility of the network can be better. The GUI can be improved for better visibility of the network flow. Other solutions have better GUI in terms of network visibility.""To some degree, it's almost a question as to why some of this stuff isn't simpler. For example, for an AP deployment, while it's integrated, the number of steps that you have to go through in order to get the AP up, seems like a lot.""The pricing could be a bit better, especially when you consider how they have the most basic offering priced.""The security of Fortinet FortiGate could improve.""The UI could be improved.""The Web-filter in this solution is not very good.""In the balance between links feature normally you can just choose one option to balance. It would be better for the solution to have more than one option, preferably three.""The biggest "gotcha" is that if the client purchases what they call the UTM shared bundle, which has unified threat management on both, it's not as easy to manage if you have more than one firewall."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"The smart console is heavy.""One of the main features that need improvement is the rule filter export.""Support for customers really needs to improve.""While the logs are very good and easy to understand, when you want to download these customized logs, they don't have as many features compared to competitive firewalls.""It should allow more than two internet providers in its configuration of "ISP Redundancy".""The main thing for a normal operations guy who is creating tools and firewalls, it is quite difficult to manage. It requires an expert level of knowledge in Check Point products to manage these scalable platform appliances and the virtual firewall that comes with it. We have to educate our guys and give them training on a regular basis to work on these products.""Potential improvements could be made around simplifying VPN functionality and configuration.""One of my issues with Check Point is the stability. There have been too many bugs, over the years, when I compare them with other vendors. Their QA team should do better work before releasing their GA versions."

More Check Point NGFW Cons →

"They could provide support for cloud deployments.""I've talked to people that say Juniper now, as a device, can be a solution for a data center, but in the past, I have not seen this as being possible.""They really need to improve the GUI.""There are too many types of licenses, which can be confusing.""I would like to see an activity sensor for malicious content or sensor for viruses and malware.""The GUI really needs a lot of work, and it has got worse with successive version updates.""The reporting can be improved.""Juniper vSRX is expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."
  • "These boxes are not that expensive compared to what they can do, their functionality, and the reporting you receive. Fortinet licensing is straightforward and less confusing compared to Cisco."
  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."
  • "Work through partners for the best pricing."
  • "The value is the capability of having multiple services with one unique license, not having the limitation per user licensing schema, like other vendors."
  • "Easy to understand licensing requirements."
  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."
  • "The cost is too high... They have to focus on more features with less cost for the customer. If you see the market, where it's going, there are a lot of players offering more features for less cost."

  • "I don't think the product's pricing is a good value. I feel it's very overpriced. I feel a lot of the features for a next gen firewall are there. But I feel it's overpriced, because of the stability issues. As far as support goes, I really can't speak to direct Check Point support, but the third-party was pretty terrible... As far as the licensing goes, it's pretty complex. If anybody was to purchase the Check Point product, definitely make sure they have an account rep come on site, and explain it line by line, what each thing is. It's not straightforward. It's very convoluted. There's no way you could just figure it out by looking at it."
  • "Check Point solutions are very expensive here. They're good, but they're expensive... Check Point is only useful for customers that have a big IT budget."
  • "The price is high in comparison to other solutions."
  • "We pay $5,000-$6,000 a year."
  • "Maybe the pricing is a bit high but you get the durability and the duration."
  • "Licensing issues may be confusing at times."
  • "It is quite an expensive product, although security is a top priority."
  • "This product is not cheap and there are additional costs that depend on what model or package that you buy."

  • "Our experience purchasing the solution through the AWS Marketplace was good."
  • "We like pricing through the AWS Marketplace."
  • "It is not that costly."
  • "After some research, I think that the cost of Juniper is more than Check Point, Palo Alto, and Fortinet."
  • "As a customer, the pricing is good for us."
  • "The pricing is reasonable."
  • "The ongoing licensing cost seems to be pretty standard. There are no additional costs."
  • "The solution could have been cheaper."

Unified management control across the network increases the efficiency of security operations and reduces IT costs.
    • Continuous logging: Check Point NGFW’s Threat Management feature detects vulnerabilities and logs them. Using the logged data, users can easily create and implement efficient security policies.

    • Remote access: The remote access VPN provides a seamless connection for remote users.

Check Point NGFW is suitable for organizations of all sizes, from small businesses to larger enterprises.

    Reviews from Real Users

G., a network administrator at Secretaría de Finanzas de Aguascalientes, writes, “Within the organization, the inspection of packages has given us great help in detecting traffic that may be a threat to the institution. The configuration of policies has allowed us to maintain control of access and users for each institution that is incorporated into our headquarters.”

Arun J., a senior network engineer, notes, “The nicest feature is the centralized management of multiple firewalls. With the centralized management, we can easily use and operate multiple firewalls as well as create a diagram of them.”
