We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I like how we can achieve total integration.""Our security improved from being able to put in rules and close off unwanted traffic.""I really like the captive portal feature for our guest network. It has nice VLAN features in terms of separating our network. The anti-virus is also good.""The response is very quick and they can visually resolve our problems in a short period.""FortiGate SD-WAN facilitated a smooth transition for our customers between their two internet service providers, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity without any downtime.""Good load balancing feature.""The interface is very good.""It's inexpensive compared to some of the other technology out there."

"The stability of this solution is excellent.""The most valuable feature is the scalability. The nice thing with the bigger vendors is that they're very good at scale.""Cisco IOS allows us to keep the same security features as our principal offices.""Cisco IOS Security has many good features, but compared to other solutions, it has a more user-friendly interface with steps to apply and manage rules. Another good part of the solution is that it's more straightforward.""There is a positive impact on security, particularly the intrusion feature, which helps keep the solution concealed and secure.""Completely integrates branch offices with perimeter security.""Cisco Technical Assistance Center works on a follow-the-sun concept and gives real 24x7 customer support, which is a great advantage when you have a service contract with them.""The hardware is pretty stable. It's also a very good product performance-wise. Initially, it wasn't mature like a firewall and there were other leaders, but now they have included almost all the features of next-generation security. Basically, it's a good product to work with."

Cons
"They should make the rule sets more understandable for the end user. When you're trying to explain to somebody how a computer network is secured, sometimes it's difficult for an end user or customer to understand. If there was a way to make the terminology more accessible to the end user, the set up could be easier. They should translate the technical jargon to an easily relatable and understandable conversation for the end user, the customer, that would be brilliant. Particularly in an environment where the IT structure is audited regularly, there's always pressure from the auditor to up the standards and up the security and you get your USCERT's that come out and there's a warning about this and the customer will want to lock out so much and when you apply it they run into issue where they can't search the internet or print to their remote office. Of course they can't print to your remote office, they just locked it up. They should make the language more understandable for the customer. If there's a product out there that made the jargon understandable to John Q. Public, I would buy that.""It does not have key authentication for admin access.""The setup is pretty complex and not easy to implement.""Usually, we sell the bundle with the UTM or threat management piece with IPS, IDS. Other providers, such as Palo Alto, are ahead in terms of safe functionality. So, for me, delivering truly safe service is probably something that still needs to be improved.""I haven't had a single issue since using Fortinet.""Some of the web policy reports could be improved.""At first glance, the interface for the device is very confusing.""The updates Fortinet provides are sometimes unstable."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"While Cisco IOS Security is stable and scalable, I would like to see it improved to be even better.""Cisco IOS Security could improve its security features. There are competitors that have some additional security features, such as Fortinet FortiGate. Additionally, there should be better synchronization with Cisco IOS Security and other vendors, and improved AI features would be beneficial.""With respect to user-friendliness, it is a command-line interface and those with such experience will get along just fine, whereas others may struggle.""There could be a bit more functions on offer that could make it easier to use.""We cannot directly upgrade the system. The tool's deployment is also very difficult in legacy environments. The tool needs to have bigger ports as well.""We need to pay for the license and it is expensive.""An area for improvement in Cisco IOS Security is the performance because it's not as stable sometimes. There's also some latency in the solution, which could be improved. Cisco IOS Security integrates with other solutions, but you'll encounter many errors after integration, so this is another area for improvement. I'd like to see enhanced performance and a simplified setup in the next version of Cisco IOS Security.""I wish it would be more like the next generation firewall technology. There should be more selection between the application and filtering."
