We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is the bundled subscription, which is IPS, TV and web filtering.""It's a firewall that secures our internal network. I have been using it since 2013, and I find that most of the features are advanced, and very user friendly.""The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the rules and quality of service.""The integration with Active Directory is one of the good features. Most of the customers are now looking for the Single Sign-on feature. So, being able to integrate Active Directory with the firewall is useful. It is also easy.""It is easy to use. We chose this product for the possibility to have virtual domains (VDOMs). We are building another company in the group, and we would like to split the firewalling rules and policies between these two companies. Each company would be able to manage its own policies and security rules, which is an advantage of Fortinet FortiGate. We can define VDOMs, and every company can manage its own VDOM as if it has its own physical firewall, but in fact, we would be using the same physical appliance because we are also using the same internet lines. So, it allows us to reuse the existing resources without the disadvantage of having to compromise on policies and security. Each company can choose its own way of working.""The solution is highly scalable because they have devices that can handle a large amount of traffic.""Security, SD-WAN, and Streetscape are valuable features.""Offers good security and filtering."

"The stability of Cisco ASA is excellent compared to other products on the market. Because of our customer experience as an integrator company, our clients never report any performance problems. We have a good performance reputation with Cisco ASA.""It is much better than most of the other firewalls that I have worked with.""Firepower has reduced our firewall operational costs by about 25 percent.""The Inline Mode configuration works really well, and ASA works very impressively.""A stable, reliable solution used to protect the network's perimeter.""Manageability of Cisco ASA. It has a GUI interface, unlike the most of Cisco IOS. For beginners they can "sneak in" and apply the command and see the actual commands that the GUI launches. In addition, Cisco has the reputation regarding security.""The AnyConnect remote access VPN gives us an easy way to deploy remote working for our users.""Cisco's engineer helped us with a lot of scripting to see what existed. Previously, we didn't have a proper policy. In fact, we didn't have any policy because we didn't have any firewall for the data center, so generating a policy was a big challenge. Cisco's engineer helped us to do some scripting and find out what kind of policy we can have and organize those policies. That was nice."

"Gajshiled's enterprise cloud and DLP-level features give it an advantage over other products.""It is a stable solution.""GajShield Next Generation Firewall's best feature is the network DLP.""GajShield has improved our mobile device-based connectivity.""The most valuable feature of the GajShield Next Generation Firewall is the user-friendly settings, dashboards, and anti-threat protection. Additionally, the solution upgrades frequently which is good because we receive new features.""It is an easily scalable solution...The initial setup was very easy.""The solution's outcome is very high, and we often use it in a very high-traffic environment."

Cons
"Fortinet needs to overhaul its documentation.""Some of the software stability could improve.""The feedback that I have received is that the performance could be better, and the user experience is not as good compared to a previous solution we used. It could be more user-friendly. Of course, it still works fine for our operations.""Maybe they could make some features more accessible, such as a way to translate directions between two networks that share the same subnets.""We were not able to build a full-mesh VPN; however, I am not sure if this was the fault of Fortinet FortiGate.""I would like to see better pricing in the next release, as well as a simplification of the installation.""Fortinet FortiGate needs to improve the logging and reporting. Additionally, the next-generation application's policies should be improved. When they were released they had bugs.""We would like to have the ability to disable some of the security functionalities."

More Fortinet FortiGate Cons →

"We have seen some bugs come up with Cisco Secure Firewall in terms of high availability. The solution should be improved to avoid these bugs.""The GUI interface could be improved when compared to other solutions.""10Gb interfaces should be available on more models.""It should be easier for the IT management or the admin to configure products. For example, the firewall products are not very straightforward for many users. They should be easier to configure and should be more straightforward.""I would like to see more configurable feature parity with Cisco ASA, which is the legacy product that Cisco is moving away from. When configuring remote access VPN, not all of the options are there. You have to download another tool, which means that the configuration takes a little bit longer with Cisco Secure Firewall. Though it's getting there, there are still some features lagging behind.""The worst part of the entire solution, and this is kind of trivial at times, is that management of the solution is difficult. You manage FireSIGHT through an internet browser. I've had Cisco tell me to manage it through Firefox because that's how they develop it. The problem is, depending on the page you're on, they don't function in the same way. The pages can be very buggy, or you can't resize columns in this one, or you can't do certain things in that one. It causes a headache in managing it.""I would like it to have faster deployment times. A typical deployment could take two to three minutes. Sometimes, it depends on the situation. It is better than it was in the past, but it could always use improvement.""These firewalls are not for beginners."

More Cisco Secure Firewall Cons →

"Sometimes, we have to use SD-WAN support for the solution, which can be improved by adapting some features that will help our approach to network services.""GajShield Next Generation Firewall could improve the flow of the settings. If somebody's using a Cisco firewall or any other brand and they want to use GajShield Next Generation Firewall the platform's UI is a bit different. If it was more similar to the others it would be better.""We face issues with some configuration parts that we don't understand in the solution, and sometimes we face issues with the VPN connection.""The firewall configuration and administration screens could use some improvement.""We raised a support ticket, and the project didn't get a proper response. There was a skill issue in TAC support.""Gajshield can improve SD-WAN compatibility at an enterprise cloud level.""GajShield Next Generation Firewall would be improved with the addition of a load-balancing feature."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Fortinet has one or two license types, and the VPN numbers are only limited by the hardware chassis make."

  • "Go for long term pricing negotiated at the time of purchase."

  • "We saved a bundle by not needing all the past appliances from an NGFW."

  • "It has a great performance-to-price value, compared to competitive solutions."

Cisco ASA vs. Palo Alto: Management Goodies You often have comparisons of both firewalls concerning security components. Of course, a firewall must block attacks, scan for viruses, build VPNs, etc. However, in this post I am discussing the advantages and disadvantages from both vendors concerning the management options: How to add and rename objects. How to update a device. How to find log entries. Etc. Cisco ASA Fast Management Suite: The ASDM GUI is really fast. You do not have to wait for the next window if you click on a certain button. It simply appears directly. On the Palo, each entry to add, e.g., an application inside a security rule, takes a few seconds. Better “Preview CLI Commands”: I am always checking the CLI commands before I send them to the firewall. On the Cisco ASA, they are quite easy to understand. I know, Palo Alto also offers the “Preview Changes”, but it takes a bit more time to recognize all XML paths. Better CLI Commands at all: For Cisco admins it is very easy to parse a “show run” and to paste some commands into another device. This is not that easy on a Palo Alto firewall. First, you must change the config-output format, and second, you cannot simply paste many lines into another device, since the ordering of these lines is NOT correct by default. That is, it simply doesn’t work. ACL Hit Count: I like the hit counts per access list entry in the GUI. It quickly reveals which entries are used very often and which ones are never used.
