We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"It's very stable.""It's a complete software that can protect all the main applications. Perhaps that's the feature I like most. The integration with the NetApp and other apps is also very nice.""We are using a KVM system in our cloud, and this solution works very well with it.""The solution provides us with a single platform to move, manage, and recover our data across on-premise locations. Some of the guys have been using it to move a virtual machine from VMware to the Microsoft solution, Hyper-V. They back it up and then they restore to the different virtual machine provider, and that works great.""The multi-tenancy is the most valuable feature for us because it's the only software that is fully multi-tenant and that has all the features we need to provide to all our tenants. It provides us with advanced features for MySQL and Oracle, among other platforms""The most valuable feature is sharing data sets like they're in a private cloud. We call it our "private cloud" because we can share anything that is inside our backup set with our colleagues or with other people, and yet, everything is still in Belgrade, in Serbia. It's not somewhere else on cloud servers. Everything is in our environment.""I'm a big fan of the reporting. You can build your own reports; it's very customizable. You can have individual reports going to groups of people or individuals. You can have them go out multiple times a day. It's basically a free-for-all as far as reporting goes. If anybody wants a specific job report every day, you can build it, schedule it, and have it go out and never touched it again. It's pretty nice.""The solution's interface is easy to use. For manageability, it doesn't matter where the resource is coming from or going to. That's the great power of the Control Panel: It's easy to use and does not matter if you manage on-prem or cloud resources."

"The most valuable features are the data center recovery administration and the time of recovery.""The most valuable feature is that it is journal-based and you don't have to replicate a lot of data.""The solution is quite stable. We haven't experienced any kind of bug or glitch. We haven't experienced crashes.""It is a point-in-time restore, which is quite handy.""Continuous replication with lower RTO and RPO is the most innovative feature. Its tight integration with VMware for VMware VMs is also valuable.""The installation is straightforward if the version you have is compatible with your infrastructure."

"I really like how you can test the failover as often as you need.""The ease of failover and test environments has proven invaluable.""We use to use VMware replication appliances to attempt to replicate our VMs to remote locations and servers, but Zerto's one-to-many replication options with deduplication have made the process much simpler without having to constantly worry about the versions of each driver.""The most valuable feature of Zerto is its overall flexibility, where it can be used for standard DR or you can also use it for server migrations, data center consolidations, etc.""We are in the process of switching over our production data center and Zerto has been a true time-saver that has cost us zero downtime.""The fact that we are able to test the failover of live systems during regular hours is invaluable to our organization.""It is incredibly granular and I really appreciate that.""The mobile application is very useful as a real-time monitoring, reporting tool. When asked the status of our machine backup and recovery ability, an easy answer is to display the status on the real-time application or browser. The Zerto Analytics tool helps predict future storage needs by tracking trends in space, journal size, and I/O rate. These are reportable statistics making quantifiable tracking easy and accurate. Having a web interface simplifies access by other system administrators."

Cons
"The back of virtual machines needs improvement. I know they're working on it. They're always doing new things but I think they still have a little bit more to do.""I think the one thing that could be improved is the customer experience. The interface should be more user friendly.""This solution can be complex and difficult to administer because it supports all of the many platforms, so it would help if they could simplify it.""Just to keep it running is time-consuming. There are five people on my team. Commvault was supposed to be one of the less time-consuming solutions, but in reality it takes 60 percent of our time just to keep it running, and that's not even fine-tuning it; that's just to keep it running.""There is room for improvement in its user interface and web console, called Command Center. They are improving it every year so if they continue in that direction, I think it will be a very reliable console.""They can always improve the interface design to make it easier. Sometimes, you need to click two or three times to do something. They should look at what tabs are used most and make them more accessible, to cut the time it takes to get to that information.""Command Center definitely gives us a complete view of our data. But finding some of the granular, very small items that we sometimes have to find, such as auxiliary copies for tapes, I still find that it's easier to navigate and, sometimes, only possible to find them using the CommCell tool.""The solution's breadth and depth of cloud support are good, but could be better. Some cloud features that are common-sense, especially on AWS, are not completely integrated yet in the product. They are a work-in-progress."

More Commvault Cons »

"I would like to see integration with EMC NetWorker in the next release.""In the next release of this software, I would like to see options that help to decrease the bandwidth required, such as compressing the data.""The solution is not easy to use. It's actually quite hard. If it could be simplified it might be better for the end user.""I would like to have the HTML 5 interface working because it is currently not functioning with the VMware environment.""It can have better integration. It would be good if, in addition to VMware VM, it can also support other hypervisors. I also want to see support for Oracle databases. As of now, it supports only SQL and Exchange. It would be good to also support other databases.""The solution could improve by being more easier to use. However, once you have used it for a while it becomes easier. Additionally, there could be better support and compatibility with management by having a command-line interface. This would be beneficial for the customers."

"I think Zerto could do better with size planning because it would be nice to analyze a server for a week and give an estimate on sizing the Journal.""I would like to see better notifications when the sync is off for an extended length of time.""The number one thing we have found we would like changed so far is the cost per VM. It would be great to get that pricing reduced.""I wouldn't mind seeing Zerto sold at a cheaper price point, although the cost is comparable to VMware SRM.""The setup process is time-consuming.""The GUI could be streamlined a bit more to enhance the administrative tasks.""It would also be nice if they could find a way to make it where one VM does not impact the entire journal history of the VPG.""Certain areas were designed and work fine for VMware but are under development for Hyper-V. Eventually, all features will work for both platforms."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"The price could perhaps be lower as well.""Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers.""Our yearly cost is around €20,000... The cost is based on the number of users and the amount of data. They sell it per terabyte.""There is a bit of cost involved with signing up the entire solution. It's not a cheap solution.""Commvault licensing is a perpetual license so only the support is being renewed yearly.""The complete license gives us options for all the features. Commvault does not license based on storage or the management components. It can integrate with any storage vendor. That means that when we are out of storage and need more, we can integrate without additional licensing. In my opinion, Commvault needs to reduce the licensing cost by 20 to 40 percent to make it cost-efficient.""We went from Veritas NetBackup to Commvault. We switched due to upfront licensing and costs. We have more visibility into what we're actually purchasing. It seemed like, overall, the cost of Commvault was cheaper.""It is cheaper than Veeam."

More Commvault Pricing and Cost Advice »

"This is not a very cheap solution and compared to others, it is expensive.""This is an expensive product.""Pricing-wise, it is pretty much fair for any customer who only has a VMware environment. Licensing is based on the number of VMs that you want to protect at any given point in time. Licensing is not based on size.""There is a license required for this solution and the pricing depends on how many virtual machines you have."

"We found that in an event that was massive enough to cause an entire cluster to go offline we would be happy with our core services up and running.""The cost is not dirt cheap but also is not terrible.""The cost per VM is a bit high.""You need to figure out how many critical servers and applications you have in your environment so you will know how many Zerto licenses to buy.""Zerto is not cheap but is an invaluable asset.""I would suggest getting a dedicated, well-informed rep.""If it were easier to license, and to scale it out a little bit more economically, that'd be a godsend. At the end of the day, my druthers would be to have all 200 of our servers protected by this platform. But for a company our size, that stretches our IT budget and it just doesn't make economic sense.""It's very equitable, otherwise you wouldn't do it. It's something that we utilize for the licenses per core as far as what we're backing up. Therefore, it's very cost-efficient as far as the licensing goes. For the amount of stuff that we're backing up and what we're utilizing it for, the licensing is not very expensive at all."
