We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"You can turn your local disk storage into high-availability iSCSI storage.""This solution made it possible to deploy a new infrastructure in the shortest amount of time, at a low cost without purchasing expensive hardware storage, and use unused servers.""StarWind Virtual SAN is essentially hardware agnostic, allowing us to build out a specific hardware layer based upon the customer's unique requirements.""The support has been amazing and quick to reply.""A typical system administrator with minimal experience in Hyper-V, VMware, or Windows can do VSAN configuration and maintain VSAN operations.""It also provides a seamless and efficient solution for personal storage requirements, showcasing the versatility and scalability of my Virtual SAN configuration.""It allows you to use ANY consumer or enterprise HDDs and SSDs, and that's a really great thing!""I have found the graphical user interface to be the most useful thing about Virtual SAN."

"In our implementations, HDS Storage Virtualization has helped in migrating data with the least amount of downtime, compared to other storage technologies.""This solution allowed us to move from using standalone systems to having all our data center management in one place.""The replication technology can move data faster than EMC MirrorView and requires less bandwidth. The Storage Virtualization technology is the most mature in the market, outside of IBM’s Storwize (which has a lot of compatibility issues, and EMC’s very expensive VPLEX solution); and it works."

"Provides high-speed network, strong storage features (ZFS), High Availability out of the box, and is Integrated with a large number of products.""Scalablility: When we need to upgrade from an eighth-rack to a full-rack, the real downtime is less then an hour.""The automation and provisioning of the environment, as well as the centralized monitoring, have all improved over the years.""Enterprise high-speed interoperability: With IPoIB we can deliver to other environments, either IP-Ethernet-based or IP-InfiniBand-based protocol, both with minimum bandwidth capacity of 10Gbps, 20Gbps, or 40Gbps, redundantly.""The main benefit of using the solution is for the performance it provides.""Server consolidation. In a cloud architecture, moving the HA VM from one to other is faster. This is because of the InfiniBand network fabric between the compute nodes and storage nodes (ZFS Storage).""Exalogic offers integration with other engineered systems, which increases the throughput capability and enables processing of bigger and heavier workloads."

Cons
"Sometimes documentation on their site can be out of date.""I would like additional documentation regarding possible networking configurations with 10GbE switching.""I'm sure it needs bug fixes...""The most disappointing side of the application is the free edition. There used to be GUI attached. That has recently changed to only CLI management of the application.""They recommend RAID10 for HDD, which reduces the usable storage capacity.""It would be helpful if StarWind provided more precise and detailed documentation explaining how to configure the solution in various scenarios, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.""It would be nice to add the ability to use raw partitions instead of file containers.""Currently, the StarWind management console is a bit clunky to navigate and isn't the most user-intuitive interface."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"HDS reaches a ceiling depending on model. The G200 cannot transition to G400, the G400 can transition to G600 but cannot transition to G800, which is the top-end model.""An area for improvement would be technical support. In the next release, I would like to see more features added to make this a more complete solution.""An update to its technology would be good. The G Series has been around for more than five years and HDS seriously needs to ramp up, since the competition has better performance at a lower cost with better features and functionalities. For example, it needs redirect on write Snapshot, preconfigured storage tiering with better IOPS, built-in deduplication technology on hybrid disk, etc."

More Hitachi Unified Compute Platform HC Series Cons →

"Middleware application services, such as statistics, data mining, could be better.""The solution needs to add a network virtualization feature similar to that of VxRail. If they could implement that, it would be great for the product.""The solution is prone to disk failures. This needs to improve. Over the past four years we've had to replace about six of them. They've failed almost every three to six months."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

    Information Not Available
  • "Get the price of the license you will need for the middleware that will be running on top of the Exalogic. Otherwise, you can use another middleware solution, as long as it can run on top of Oracle Linux."
  • "Pricing and licensing are two very delicate aspects when talking about Oracle, especially engineered systems. The prices are quite high compared with other similar products, so the CapEx analysis and investment return have to be very well studied."
  • "To expand the hardware's capability requires a massive investment."
