Researched SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence Platform but chose MicroStrategy: The implementation was fairly straightforward. The most valuable features are ad hoc reporting and the ability to create dashboards.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
This solution has allowed us to become a top-class competitor among other consulting companies.
It is a reliable solution for our needs.
The implementation was fairly straightforward.
The most valuable features are ad hoc reporting and the ability to create dashboards.
The whole repository side of things is beneficial because you develop it once, and you can use it anywhere, in the Enterprise grade.
It scales well. It used to have only a max of four I-servers, but I think recently, somewhere in version 10, they doubled that, so you can have eight I-servers now.
Cube performance and easy integration with third-party tools/products, are valuable features.
Mobile brings reports/dashboards closer to the business user.
The common metadata environment means that the entire organisation has the same definition of core measures rather than these being derived in spreadsheets or specific reports.
It is solid and stable.
It gives you a lot of flexibility in designing your dashboards.
We use it to identify critical KPIs to senior management.
It has been extremely valuable, to combine data from various data sources.
It can process big volumes of data fast.
Through the use of Business Intelligence reporting and scheduling features, reports are generated and automatically sent according to a schedule. This has freed up countless hours spent performing the same tasks, month over month.
Enables us to present data with Smart Objects that can be embedded within presentations and which automatically update when the presentations are run.
I would like to see a single standalone application to control everything from the administration perspective, and also to develop new applications.
This solution is missing enhanced features in the dashboards.
The product could be improved by adding additional visualization.
Another feature to consider in the future would be adding some additional offline capabilities without using desktops.
If you compare it with Power BI with the DAX language, it would be great to put that into MicroStrategy.
I don't think that they will, but I'd like to see parallel processing, scalable parallel processing.
Data writeback, and on-the-fly predictive analysis results from R and Python could be improved.
With Cube partition (v10.1 and above) scalability has not been an issue, but the Cube publish time, and temporary space consumption while the Cube is being published, has almost doubled during implementation of Cube partition.
This solution is complex to configure and administer.
Over the years, the product tends to rename and rebrand itself and change its direction. This is a deficit of the solution.
The combination of Lumira along with Design Studio merger last year still needs development from a visualization standpoint.
SAP BusinessObjects is actually losing popularity within our company because people find the user interface and the way things are set up not to be as easy as many other tools that are on the market, like Qlik and things like that.
The admin features for disk space management need work. It's very difficult to manage the disk space by the application; good admin features and not included to allow you to do that. I don't believe that is in the latest version of the product either.
Currently, we can use Explore to do data discovering, but cannot generate charts.
The biggest area for improvement would be the dashboarding capabilities due to the recent change from Xcelsius to Dashboard Designer. This has created a gigantic ripple in many companies because the skill sets required are drastically different.
Pricing and Cost Advice
The licensing is a bit high per user.
Pricing, in general, is high. With Power BI, you get mobile with the license, whereas with MicroStrategy, you have to purchase mobile for extra.
Depending on your size, try to stick with SAP BusinessObjects BI Edge. Most people tend to overthink the licensing. Remember that one concurrent user means that one person can be performing a task at a given time. That does not mean that only one user can be on the system at a time, it means that only one person can be refreshing a report or designing a dashboard. There are tons of ways you can access your data or reports without consuming a license. I've seen cases where five concurrent licenses support thousands of users.
There's no additional charge for a Development environment license, so build an additional development server.
