We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
We do you use Oracle support. We've been paying for an Oracle support subscription for four or five years, and not one ticket has ever been logged. When I came in, I've encouraged the team to ask Oracle questions. They do get back quite quickly. Their support is good. Working with our account managers, if I need to escalate anything, I can speak to them and they escalate the call. I've got that ecosystem working quite well. That does work for us.
The most valuable feature is the openness of the solution. It helps us integrate some of our clients.
I think having the conformed structures makes it a lot easier for end users and pulling reports together.
The scalability of the product is good.
It's easy to use for business analysts.
Can utilize SQL queries to generate reports directly.
It mostly supports enterprise level data. We have millions of records on a daily basis.
It can be used with any type of data models, such as relational lines and dimensional lines.
It is solid and stable.
It gives you a lot of flexibility in designing your dashboards.
We use it to identify critical KPIs to senior management.
It has been extremely valuable, to combine data from various data sources.
It can process big volumes of data fast.
Through the use of Business Intelligence reporting and scheduling features, reports are generated and automatically sent according to a schedule. This has freed up countless hours spent performing the same tasks, month over month.
Enables us to present data with Smart Objects that can be embedded within presentations and which automatically update when the presentations are run.
Reporting from SAP Business Objects Web Intelligence is amazing, and gives users the ability to quickly access data from existing universes and/or relevant data sources, without the need to involve a functional business analyst or financial analyst.
They should develop greater visualization because their visualization isn't industry leading at the moment. The way you pull the data and see the data compared to other platforms, they're lagging a little bit behind. Also, their cost. I've got Oracle account managers trying to persuade me every day to purchase these licenses. Once you purchase OBIEE, then you have to purchase the virtualization and then you have to purchase the mobile license to operate on the mobile. It's really expensive.
In terms of tech support, we have our own technicians. But, we did register for their help. When we register a call, it takes time for them to respond to us.
This solution is weak in the data science perspective. I have past data science experience. And, I find that there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of incorporating more advanced statistical modeling into the product.
It is not a good product for data visualization.
Its functionality is lacking.
When a large number of queries are running at the same time, the report fails.
It crashes when many people login simultaneously.
While it is a user-friendly, data-driven tool, the data modeling should be easier to use.
Over the years, the product tends to rename and rebrand itself and change its direction. This is a deficit of the solution.
The combination of Lumira along with Design Studio merger last year still needs development from a visualization standpoint.
SAP BusinessObjects is actually losing popularity within our company because people find the user interface and the way things are set up not to be as easy as many other tools that are on the market, like Qlik and things like that.
The admin features for disk space management need work. It's very difficult to manage the disk space by the application; good admin features and not included to allow you to do that. I don't believe that is in the latest version of the product either.
Currently, we can use Explore to do data discovering, but cannot generate charts.
The biggest area for improvement would be the dashboarding capabilities due to the recent change from Xcelsius to Dashboard Designer. This has created a gigantic ripple in many companies because the skill sets required are drastically different.
This product could be improved with Cloud Integrations and Predictive Analytics functions integration.
More thorough testing of Service Packs before release.
Pricing and Cost Advice
The pricing we negotiated with Oracle. But, I do not have details.
I think to spread this across an enterprise will be a significant investment.
Be prepared to spend a lot of time and money.
It is high.
Depending on your size, try to stick with SAP BusinessObjects BI Edge. Most people tend to overthink the licensing. Remember that one concurrent user means that one person can be performing a task at a given time. That does not mean that only one user can be on the system at a time, it means that only one person can be refreshing a report or designing a dashboard. There are tons of ways you can access your data or reports without consuming a license. I've seen cases where five concurrent licenses support thousands of users.
There's no additional charge for a Development environment license, so build an additional development server.
It is not an expensive platform. The licensing is for a package of users starting at 10 users.
It has an option of a Cloud Platform (SAP Analytics Cloud) which has a lower price than the on-premise platform, and you can buy individual licences per user.
Just work with SAP to make sure you have enough licenses but don't go overboard.

The essence of the platform is to integrate your current IT together with their tools in order to give you the overall best return on investment with minimal fiscal obligations.
The SAP® BusinessObjects™ Business Intelligence (BI) platform is a flexible, scalable information infrastructure that helps you more easily discover and share insights for better business decisions.
