We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Using our own choice of HW allowed us to price our service to answer our customers' needs.""PowerShell library is pretty good feature as I created with APC PowerChute a script to put volumes on maintenance mode then turning off the StarWind nodes together with the VM and Hosts when UPS reaches 15 percent, this way after a blackout or electrical problems when turning servers on again, there is no issues for syncing or data loss due to energy interrupts.""The customer support provided by StarWind is excellent.""The Windows-based StarWind GUI is easy to use and understand and integrates seamlessly with VMware's vSphere portal as well.""We went from "no way DB applications would have good performance" to "Wow! We can now actually have a DB running and have some VMs running at the same time."""StarWind has provided us with a top-notch, well-supported, robust vSAN offering when other vendors have moved to hyper-converged solutions that are outside of our average clients' reach from a financial and resource perspective.""It's quite easy to manage.""It provided the much-needed HA on an extremely low budget."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pros →

"The most valuable feature is the solution's ease of upgrading.""It has a user-friendly dashboard and interface.""It has centralized management. It is easy for an engineer to manage. More work goes to patching, upgrades, and maintenance. Nutanix is very easy to upgrade. It takes one click. Engineers do not need to spend additional time with Nutanix for upgrades. With one click, it will complete the upgrade and show the results. Other hypervisor solutions are not like this, specifically since you must do all the components one by one.""Single click actions is definitely the most important. They were not even aware that they wanted this.""Acropolis AOS is scalable to nodes and the cloud.""The most valuable feature is the integration of all parts in Prism Element, the browser-based management tool.""One-click setup is a valuable feature because it allows us to set up a server automatically with a single click.""Great flexibility and scalability."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

"Apart from the main features, I really appreciate OpenStack's microservices architecture and its flexibility for deployment with different tools.""There are many services that can be directly used which are not available in VMware.""The most valuable feature is the customization. With the customization you can really give the customers what they want.""The initial setup isn't too difficult.""The solution is stable.""I like its integration with GitLab and its simplicity. OpenStack has a lot of third-party libraries that it uses.""It created a reusable library with OpenStack features.""The documentation was plentiful and very helpful."

Cons
"To enable the proactive support capability that is part of our support agreement, I would ask that the terms and conditions be revised and made acceptable to corporate security.""Updates seem to be non-existent.""It should be improved in the way it detects the right filesystem image after a complete shutdown of the system or in the case of disaster recovery.""StarWind really needs to market its product more.""Management of VSAN itself could be improved. A Web UI for management would be great rather than an application installation. StarWind is testing a command center virtual appliance that I have installed in my environment.""I want to suggest that the complexity of the startup and shutdown procedure needs to be reduced.""I would like to see more monitoring and alert tools.""I found that certain browsers are not fully compatible with the administration web access portal."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"The price could be lower.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS is new technology in a competitive market. Pricing is too high for a new product and requires better discounts to be able to compete with IBM, Dell EMC, and HP.""We would like to see a cloud version of Acropolis AOS. Currently, we're trying to implement an AWS environment for some solutions, but we would like to use another technology also to enhance our organization, so we are looking for another technology for this, especially a cloud solution.""There should be a little more access to Nutanix files.""It would be great if they could improve the GUI features.""The licensing cost could be lower.""It would be great if it could emulate some of the features that their competitor VMware has, for example port mirroring or Netflow output at hypervisor level.""Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure can be improved in terms of the sizing of the solution."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Cons →

"The seamless integration between MySQL services and the rabbitMQ database can be revised during the debugging phase.""The line migration is a problem.""VMware has a side-to-side replication feature, which is still more mature than Rackspace OpenStack's which can't be used in a production environment.""OpenStack's UI, while user-friendly, could be improved to offer a more intuitive experience.""So for the main stability, there have been a couple of issues that I've experienced.""It could use more examples in different languages (API use cases).""OpenStack is difficult for the novice in terms of beginning to use cloud tools."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
