Dell Avamar Initial Setup
The initial setup for Dell Avamar was average. It wasn't the simplest, but it wasn't the most complex.
View full review »The initial setup and configuration is a bit complex and it may require vendor support and technical expertise.
I am not directly involved in deployment, but we've used Avamar for so long that it's likely effortless for our engineers to deploy it. The infrastructure is already there.
We don't have dedicated engineers for the Avamar platform, but we have a team of 15 to 20 administrators who manage and maintain our backup technologies.

The initial setup for Dell Avamar in terms of complexity is fifty-fifty. The process is not so easy, and it's not so tough. It's a six out of ten, setup-wise.
Deploying the solution took seventy-two hours.
View full review »The initial setup is easy. We’ve been using it long, so it's not too complicated. It takes no more than eight working hours to initially deploy the solution, at least for installing servers.
New users may need some support from the OEM side. They won't be able to install it themselves. They will require support to set up the server independently for the first time. After that, it's smooth sailing.
In Italy, we gathered all the requirements for the hybrid-based network card, bandwidth, and switch points. After that, we prepared a questionnaire with their support partner for the number of IP addresses in the LAN, which is around 20-22, and DNS records in the DNS servers. There were multiple things required to set up this deployment. After the initial installation of the servers and configuration, we began deploying the policies for the data sets, retention periods, and grouping for backup schedules. These configurations are one-time activities.

Installing Avamar is complex. It is complicated to install, configure, and get it working in a complex network. However, it's the same with most data protection products.

The initial setup is complex.
For example, we have approximately eight-node clusters of Avamar servers on the primary site and we have five node clusters of Avamar on the other site. Integration was a bit difficult. I am supporting the product myself, without the help of any EMC support, for two years now.
There are some issues because this is an appliance. The administration of Avamar is quite simple but there are underlining things that need to be supported and are quite difficult because this is an appliance.

The initial setup is easy. I rate it a ten out of ten. The time taken to deploy the solution depends on the end customer's environment. If it's complex, we'll need about one day to deploy. The price is quite low because right now, most of the Avamar appliances, like the DP4400, which comes together with Avamar, are ready to use. We just need to put the required IP addresses in the initial stages. After that, it's ready to use. We then just add a host to back up to Avamar. In this case, completing the implementations takes about two to three hours.

It was complex. You have to have proxies. You can't just have one piece of hardware to back up all the systems in two facilities. You have to deploy proxy servers to every single VMware cluster. We've backup on a private backup network that had to be configured because we fundamentally do web service and financial targets out front, and we didn't want it to cramp that network. So, it is not simple; it is complex.
To do the primary site, it took very long. At that point, we were doing physical and virtual machines. We had some HPX physical, and we also had a mini mainframe seven years ago. It probably took a solid week to get it installed and get it completely operational. There were a few more details to it, but basically, we were up and running within about a week, but it is not going to happen in a day.
View full review »I rate the ease of setup an eight out of ten. For an experienced person, the deployment takes a few hours.
View full review »The solution is simple to set up. As long as an administrator has some knowledge, it's not too difficult. I'd rate the solution five or six out of ten in terms of ease of setup.
You can deploy the solution in about half a day.
I'm not really into deployment. We have a team that does deployment - a pre-sales team. I have very limited knowledge when it comes to deployment. That said, my understanding is only one person really needs to handle the deployment process.
Jobs have to be set in the initial deployment, which is straightforward for recovering from older backups. After that, not much maintenance is required.

The initial setup is straightforward. It is a true enterprise solution. It has a lot of configurable options that you may or may not use based on your environment.
I have engineers that are all over the world, and I have those that are global to manage this solution, and a storage and backup team.
We have 10 people globally. There is a director who manages that group as well as a principal storage lead or principal storage engineer who does a lot of design and architectural work.
View full review »The initial setup is a bit complex, especially if it's a new installation, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty smooth.
The length of the deployment depends on your plan, what you need to back up, and if you order Oracle and whatever else you need beforehand. Worst case scenario, it would probably take a week to set up, but if you have all your ducks in a row, it'll be maybe two days, max.
It is not difficult at all to maintain.

The deployment is quick and easy. It's a one-click installation and it only takes two hours.
Maintenance is easy since no physical presence is required. This setup can be built remotely also.

Setting up Avamar wasn't so easy, and we had a partner doing the installation for us. Though it was hard at first, it's getting better. The main difficulty was finding plugins for Oracle Database. It took some time to open a ticket with Dell, but everything was fine after that. I would rate the overall deployment experience eight out of 10. We have two system engineers for deployment and maintenance as needed. They're not managing the solution full time, but they handle new bundles, fixes, etc.

Moving from old to new was not as smooth as I would have expected, simply because we had to upgrade our local storage. Going forward we won't have those issues. We had just the formats and Avamar supports their own format and stores it locally. They also have the data domain which doesn't really migrate from app bar to data domain so you have to basically hydrate it and then we re-back it up to go on the data bank, which was our issue. They use their ADME product do that migration. Basically, they get their technicians involved and it took several months.

The initial setup is pretty straightforward. It's good that Dell EMC provides the virtual additions of these appliances for people to practice beforehand. Otherwise, you might be familiar with a certain version but not understand the subsequent versions. You would never know unless you could get a production set up, which is not possible. You can't go and play with the client setup. For this reason, Dell EMC, like other good vendors, offers virtual additions. Data Domain, NetWorker, Avamar, everything you can practice.
