ManageEngine Endpoint Central Other Advice

JB
Sr Engineer Administrator at a university with 10,001+ employees

I focus primarily on security and hardening, and they've made leaps and bounds in that as well as mobile device management and cross-platform capability in terms of working with multiple vendors and multiple devices. They seem to fit the bill there.

The MDM is incorporated in the Desktop Central, and they also offer an OS deployment module. ManageEngine has a lot of modules. Desktop Central is probably made from two or three separate products. They all are combined and collaborated into what Desktop Central is. Their analyzer tools pull from different apps to build functionality into some of the bigger core applications, such as DTC or Endpoint now. It is called Endpoint Management.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

My advice to people looking into this solution is that if you want to improve on the patching processes as a part of a DevSecOps pipeline, Desktop Central can help you do that. It will help you make that workflow easier and it is a better option than other solutions. So this works out to be a better because everything is built-in. You do not have to integrate with any other company's portal or any other incident management or tracking.

If you plan for a patch, there are different tools to use, different notifications to set for the patch, and they can be administered within Desktop Central itself. So the admin can approve it and once the notification changes, the patch can be released to the endpoints. That works pretty fast. That built-in workflow makes it more productive and easier to use.

On a scale from one to ten, where one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate Desktop Central higher than the VMware and Citrix Workspaces. The workflows are much better and easier, and the different roles for IT and Ops are well defined. So I would rate somewhere around seven.

It is a seven because it still has got some room for improvement, but I think seven is good.

The product works perfectly for patch management and software deployments. The tool makes the lives of its users easier, and allows us to deploy any software, like the deployment of Zscaler on our company's machines.

The product's most beneficial feature for IT security posture stems from the patch updates give clear visibility of which machines are installed or missing with the important crucial patches.

The product has streamlined application management because it gives me the list of applications in my network. I get clear visibility using ManageEngine Endpoint Central's software summary report if there is an anti-virus product network and if I need to find out the machines on which it is deployed.

The product is very easy to maintain if you know about the solution.

My company does not integrate ManageEngine Endpoint Central with any other products.

ManageEngine Endpoint Central is a cost-effective product. If you are someone who looks at areas like automation and deployment and feels the need to have the correct type of reports, then ManageEngine Endpoint Central is a good product.

I rate the overall tool an eight out of ten.

If I re-implement it today, I'd strongly consider a cloud-based infrastructure instead of on-premise.

It is solid. It is a legacy technology, and it has been around forever. It does what it does. It is complicated, but it works. It is not brilliant, but it is highly functional.

I would rate it a seven out of ten.

ManageEngine Desktop Central is a product that's worth the money. It's easy to install and quicker in action. If you start installing the product today, in a small environment, you will be able to deploy the application in two hours.

I rate ManageEngine a seven out of ten. They have a lot of improvements to make.

They have a service where they come in and configure it or do the setup for you for a price. I don't remember the price, but it was pretty reasonable. If you're not familiar with the platform, that might be a good thing to go with, especially if you don't want to go in and do the ifs and buts trying to set it up. It would be a lot easier if you had them come and set it up for you. With all the alerting and everything else that you have to set up with it, it takes a minute to get it up and running and have everything the way you wanted.

I'd give it an eight out of 10. I was really happy with it.

I would score it as nine out of ten.

I'd advise users to try out a POC. If they have a lot of machines in their company and need help with patching, this might be the perfect solution. However, try it on some machines first. See how it goes. It's the easiest way to find a solution that will work for you.

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.

We're an ManageEngine partner.

I'm likely using version 13. It would be the version they released last year that we are working with.

It's the best product. It's a solution that has all the features you will ever need to manage all the endpoints in your company. It has everything you will imagine, and it's simple to manage, it's simple to install, and once you install it, it will work on its own, and you can reduce the manpower required. You may have needed ten administrators before, yet, with this, now you only will use two due to the automated remote control software pushing and patching. All can be done on a single console remotely. You reduce the workload and free up people.

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten based on its many features and its low learning curve. You can become a good admin within a month or two just by using it and checking the menus.

I decided to use ManageEngine Endpoint Central for IT inventory management and patch management.

I immediately started to see and experience the benefits of using the solution in my company. At my old workplace, when I used to use the on-premises version of the tool, I felt that the product was a bit time-consuming. At my new organization, we were using the cloud version of the product during the trial session, after which, during the initial setup phase, I enrolled 150 machines just to show my colleagues how easy it is to manage ManageEngine Endpoint Central compared to Microsoft Intune. Within a couple of days, though not everything was completely patched with the solution, I felt it was pretty immediate to deliver in the area of patch management.

I rate the tool a seven or eight out of ten.

Currently, we are using on-prem. I am waiting for SaaS, however, I really don't have the SaaS version. It'll be very good if they offer a SaaS version; my manageability will become very much easier.

If you're looking for third-party patch management, asset management, and/or remote control support, then this is the best app. For remote control, it doesn't require much bandwidth. Often, people sitting in a remote location are using their 3G data cards or mobile data, mobile phone, and they still got connected with the seamless connectivity. There has been no issue.

I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

My advice to those wanting to implement this solution would be if they have a small IT department and they do not have strong IT people, ManageEngine Desktop Central is pretty simple to deploy. The complexity is not as big as an SCCM or some of the other products.

In terms of training, there's a lot of things on YouTube that tell you exactly how to do it. There is some good documentation from ManageEngine Desktop Central. It is very simple to deploy and get it up and running.

I rate ManageEngine Desktop Central an eight out of ten.

If you're new to the solution, check your requirements because the solution is not suitable for every situation. We're using it for a data center, so we configured it differently. If, for example, you're dealing with local laptops on office premises and you're looking to do patch management, a product like Ivanti might be more useful. For us, Desktop Central is pretty good because we are working on servers, and the vulnerability checks we do on the security base are pretty high, so the patch management option of Desktop Central is pretty good.

There is room for improvement, so I rate the solution eight out of 10.

With Secure USB, the system relies on the Device Instance ID of the USB device to identify and secure it (Allow, Deny). For implementation, my advice would be to “Deny all USB access” in order to allow access to devices only permitted by the organisation when plugged in.

The “Device Instance ID” is a unique, long string, alphanumerical identifier. To allow access to a specific device you’ll need to copy/paste this ID (from Device Manager) into ManageEngine. Let’s say you now have 20 IDs listed, how would you know which ID is for which device, as ManageEngine does not provide such option. I ended up creating a spreadsheet which records such information. That’s quite a convoluted way of doing things.

A USB Device can have multiple “Device Instance Id”: i.e. Digital camera. That means sometimes it becomes a hit and miss to get the device to work.
