Pros and Cons
  • "This product has a lot of features and most of them are user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and Microsoft BI is one of the products that we implement for our customers.

What is most valuable?

Microsoft BI is easy to implement, as it is a web-based product that doesn't need to be installed.

This product has a lot of features and most of them are user-friendly.

The visualizations are pretty easy to create. In fact, if you want to create anything new, it is pretty easy to do.

A powerful and easy-to-use platform with a lot of connectors
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature would be the abundance of connectors. It is also easy to use."
  • "It is easy enough. I don't see any real substantial improvements that are needed. It is great as it is, but its interface could be a bit modern."

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature would be the abundance of connectors. It is also easy to use.

It is a very powerful platform for BI. It has everything that you want from BI.

What needs improvement?

It is easy enough. I don't see any real substantial improvements that are needed. It is great as it is, but its interface could be a bit modern.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for six years. I am using the online version. So, it is the latest one.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has improved over the years. There were problems a few years ago, but now, it is way better.

How are customer service and support?

Their support is fine. I had to reach technical support a few times, and they have been very good in the last two years.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Compared to others, I think it is reasonable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I tested a few other similar products before deciding on Power BI.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to just try it. I would rate it a 10 out of 10.

Easy to use, quick report generating, and simple installation
Pros and Cons
  • "Microsoft BI was very helpful for me because I had a huge variety of connections. It is very convenient to build reports, even if somebody has no experience using BI tools or data visualizations. Additionally, the performance is very good when generating reports."

What is our primary use case?

I used Microsoft BI to develop reports and then deployed them into Microsoft BI web.

    What is most valuable?

Microsoft BI was very helpful for me because I had a huge variety of connections. It is very convenient to build reports, even if somebody has no experience using BI tools or data visualizations. Additionally, the performance is very good when generating reports.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Microsoft BI for approximately three months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution has been good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The solution is scalable.

We have approximately 100 people in my organization using the solution and they are mostly managers.

We used the solution on a daily basis, we were using it extensively.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

    I have used Tableau previously.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy to complete and it took approximately 30 minutes.

    What about the implementation team?

We did the implementation of the solution using two technicians.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The current licensing model that Microsoft BI has is expensive. My customers have told me the cost is approximately $20 per user and this can get expensive fast. There should be a one-time purchase option if the customer has a lot of users.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Microsoft BI a nine out of ten.

Easy to use and flexible but can't handle big data
    Pros and Cons
    • "The product is easy to use and simple to navigate."
    • "The product doesn't support unstructured data. It doesn't support video, streaming, and strings of files."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution primarily for making dashboards. We are also doing analytics on Microsoft BI.

    What is most valuable?

    The solution is very stable.

The product is easy to use and simple to navigate.

The product has proven to be quite flexible.

It is quite scalable and it is doing the work that we want it to.

    What needs improvement?

We'd like the solution to be more scalable.

We'd like the ability to manage it on the cloud, as a cloud-based solution. It is running out of business as it is not able to keep pace with the big data. Big data is not something that BI can support. It cannot be scaled that much.

The product doesn't support unstructured data. It doesn't support video, streaming, and strings of files. Microsoft is aware of this.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for seven to eight years at this point. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable and the performance is very good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is quite scalable, although, in our case, as we are not on the cloud, we are facing some issues.

We have more than ten people using the solution currently.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never reached out to technical support in the past. I cannot speak to how helpful or responsive they are.

    How was the initial setup?

I wasn't a part of the initial setup. That was something that was handled by another team. I can't speak to how long it took to deploy.

My understanding is that you only need two people to deploy the solution. Admins usually handle it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't have any insights into the licensing and payments required.

What other advice do I have?

We are using the latest version of the solution. I'm not sure of the exact version number.

I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten. For us, it has met our expectations and we enjoy its capabilities.

I'd recommend this product to other users and organizations.

Powerful, user-friendly, and easy to set up
    Pros and Cons
    • "The product can go easily go and extract data and it can put it into any format."
    • "I'm not overly technical, and so I can't really speak to any shortcomings from a technical standpoint."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the product for running the reports and all data extraction in our organization.

    What is most valuable?

The solution is a wonderful tool overall.

Power BI is very powerful and very easy to use. Its user-friendliness is one of its most valuable aspects. It has a very nice user interface that makes everything easy to navigate.

The product can go easily go and extract data and it can put it into any format.

It's a very good data analytic tool.

The initial setup is pretty easy. It's pretty straightforward in general.

    What needs improvement?

I can't say that anything glaring is missing from the offering at this time.

Microsoft is doing a lot of research on it and they're coming up with a lot of good release items.

I'm not overly technical, and so I can't really speak to any shortcomings from a technical standpoint.

I'd like to have more time with the solution to evaluate it to see if there's really anything missing. We don't really go in-depth with the product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution since about 2017. It's been a few years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is very good. It's a Microsoft product and therefore they wouldn't put anything out that wasn't tested and worthy of release. There aren't bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's quite reliable and offers good performance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While the scalability is there, the cost is what you have to factor in. It has to scale as if there's more data, it needs to meet that demand and be able to extract and analyze it.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support for the most part has been very good. They are helpful and responsive. We are satisfied with the level of support we receive. On a scale of one to 25, I would give it a mark of 20.

    How was the initial setup?

We've found the initial setup to be pretty straightforward. It's not complex. A company shouldn't have too much trouble getting everything up and running.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'm not sure of the exact cost of the solution. It's not an aspect of the product I need to worry about.

I am aware that we currently have an enterprise license.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I personally haven't evaluated or compared any other solutions. I don't have any knowledge in terms of how it compares to other options.

What other advice do I have?

We are customers and end-users. We don't have a specific business relationship with Microsoft.

I would rate the solution eight out of ten overall. We've been pretty satisfied with the product.

    Relatively new, stable, and scalable
    Pros and Cons
    • "It's a pretty scalable product."
    • "The product could have better analytics capabilities."

    What is most valuable?

    The solution is stable.

    It's a pretty scalable product.

Overall it's a good product. It is still rather new, therefore, for now, it's still a learning curve as we get used to all of the features and capabilities.

    What needs improvement?

The charting tool could be improved.

The product could have better analytics capabilities.

The initial setup is not straightforward.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for five months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is quite stable. I'd call it reliable. It doesn't crash or freeze and I can't recall bugs or glitches happening.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. If your organization needs to expand it, it shouldn't be a problem to do so.

We have about five people on the solution, however, we don't have it fully functioning just yet.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I did not use a different solution previously before the implementation of this product. This is the first solution we've used for these purposes.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty complex. It's not straightforward or simple. You need to be a bit of an expert in order to handle it, and I am, unfortunately, not an expert. If you had more experience with it, you might find it easier than I did.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I was not involved in the pricing or procurement process of the solution. I'm not sure how licensing works of the overall cost of the solution on a monthly or yearly basis. It's not part of my day-to-day.

What other advice do I have?

We're just a customer. We don't have a business relationship with Microsoft.

I'm not sure which version of the solution we are using. It may be the latest.

On a scale from one to ten, I'd rate it at an eight. We've been pretty happy with it, even though it is quite new to us.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Interactive, user friendly, and efficient in terms of performance
    Pros and Cons
    • "The best thing about this solution is that it is very user friendly. It is interactive in terms of visualizations. It is very eye-catching, and it attracts users. There are a lot of options to visualize the data in different drafts and views. I have used different visualization tools, and I found Power BI to be more efficient in terms of performance, user-friendliness, and ease of use."
    • "A few features available in Tableau are not available in Power BI. For example. Tableau has the ability to make up the physical layer and all other stuff at runtime. In Power BI, we have to develop a proper physical layer to connect it. The limitation that we normally face is related to the direct query mode. When it comes to the direct query mode, most of the functionality is not working, which is an issue for us. We have to use the direct query mode frequently because the client needs real-time data. They should work on this limitation. There are a lot of other technical things that need to be improved. I am also following the Power BI platform and Microsoft Support Center platform on the web where users have put their requirements. Microsoft is also working on improving this solution. In every update, they add new features to this solution."

    What is most valuable?

The best thing about this solution is that it is very user friendly. It is interactive in terms of visualizations. It is very eye-catching, and it attracts users. There are a lot of options to visualize the data in different drafts and views.

I have used different visualization tools, and I found Power BI to be more efficient in terms of performance, user-friendliness, and ease of use.

In every update, they add new features to this solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for more than four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable. I haven't found it hanging. It consumes a lot of memory on the local system but not while developing the reports. It also depends on the data on which we are working, but generally, it is light and stable.

How are customer service and technical support?

My overall experience with Microsoft is actually quite good. We have contacted their technical support once or twice. It was something related to the Power BI visualization, where we needed to visualize some data, but they had some kind of limitation in personalization. We also wanted to connect Power BI with other servers, but we were facing some performance issues. The reports were not working fine. I don't think they managed to solve our issues.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked on SiteSense and Oracle OBIEE. I feel more satisfied when I'm working with Power BI. It is more convenient as compared to other solutions.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. I didn't find any complexity in it. It can be difficult if the end users don't know how to use it. If they are trained on it, then after a week or a month, it gets easier for the end users.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Its cost seems to be unreasonable if you have many users, but for a lesser number of users, it is reasonable. It is $10 per month. Clients easily accept this option, so they must think it is reasonable.

It is quite cheap as compared to other tools, such as Tableau. One of the best things about this solution is that it has a trial version.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Microsoft BI a seven out of ten.
