Transaction-wise, it's fast and uses the materialized view concept, but price-wise, it's costly and is challenging to scale
Pros and Cons
  • "What I found most valuable about Oracle Database as a Service is its fast transactions and materialized views."
  • "Oracle Database as a Service is a good product but costly. Scaling it is challenging."

What is most valuable?

What I found most valuable about Oracle Database as a Service is its fast transactions and materialized views.

What needs improvement?

Oracle Database as a Service is a good product but costly. The licensing costs for it should be reduced because it's expensive. The license fee for Oracle Database is more costly than my product license.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have used Oracle Database as a Service for more than twenty years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database as a Service takes work to scale.

How are customer service and support?

Oracle support could be better, so I'm giving it six out of ten. There was a new release, and my team requested the patch, but it took the Oracle team a long time to address the request.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

Setting up Oracle Database as a Service requires a lot of manual work, so setup-wise, it's a six out of ten.

Deploying the product takes twenty-four hours.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing for Oracle Database as a Service is expensive.

What other advice do I have?

My company has more than five thousand clients on Oracle Database as a Service, but it could now be less than that because of the price issue.

Thirty people maintain, monitor, and do ad hoc testing and recovery backup for Oracle Database as a Service.

If a client currently uses Oracle Database as a Service, I suggest keeping it. However, scaling it is challenging, and its pricing is costly.

In the past, Oracle Database as a Service was a nine out of ten. Nowadays, it's a five out of ten.

My company is an Oracle customer.

Indexes are built in to the solution and it's very easy to implement
Pros and Cons
  • "You can be up and running the same day."
  • "When migrating to a different instance, the internal machine learning is lost."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for this Oracle solution is as the repository for applications developed in-house. I'm a software and integration architect and we are customers of Oracle.

What is most valuable?

I like that the solution is easy to onboard. There's no database on-premise that requires installation from scratch. Without the serverless option, installation is a very complicated process. It requires hardware as well as DBAs, operating system, and network administrators. With Database as a Service, you can be up and running the same day.

What needs improvement?

Although we do not need to set up our own indexes, because the solution internally improves the queries, when we migrate to a different instance, the internal machine learning is lost. The solution doesn't provide an option for migrating the index optimization to another instance.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this service for nearly three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I believe it is scalable although we haven't had the opportunity to do that yet.

How are customer service and support?

We have the Oracle Support Subscription and they have been helpful. We also have Advanced Customer Services from Oracle.

How was the initial setup?

We have set up the solution numerous times and it has been very easy.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend this solution and rate it nine out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Reliable solution with zero crashes
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle has helped our organization by being a reliable solution that is stable with zero crashes. The differentiation between Oracle's database and other databases is that Oracle needs more attention. It's not a click here, click there solution, it needs more time put in, but once you do that, it's ready to go and you can forget about it."
  • "The area in this solution that could be improved is that currently, it's difficult to do the setup. You need to do all kinds of command lines to get it set up. If that setup becomes easier and easily manageable, that would be great."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case for this solution for the clients I have been working with is building applications and storing their data in the database. My other use case is helping companies set up data guards for high availability.

How has it helped my organization?

Oracle has helped our organization by being a reliable solution that is stable with zero crashes. The differentiation between Oracle's database and other databases is that Oracle needs more attention. It's not a click here, click there solution, it needs more time put in, but once you do that, it's ready to go and you can forget about it.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the solution's ability to seamless transform a primary into a standby database. When setting up failover where you have an active and a standby database and production goes down, you don't know if there are any issues. So, a seamless switch over to the standby is valuable because you can work on the production that has gone down to fix the problem.

What needs improvement?

The area in this solution that could be improved is that currently, it's difficult to do the setup. You need to do all kinds of command lines to get it set up. If that setup becomes easier and easily manageable, that would be great.

In the next release, I'd like to see a simpler connection between Oracle and other databases like SQL, MySQL, or a DB tool. I'd also like to see a simpler way to pull data from those external databases. This would add value to Oracle in my opinion.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Database as a Service since 2007. That adds up to around 16 years. I started using Oracle when it was Oracle version 10.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost of licensing for this solution is quite high.

What other advice do I have?

When it comes to other people looking into this solution, I would advise double-checking the pricing as it's quite high for Oracle. Other than that, go for it.

Overall, I would rate this solution a 10, on a scale from one to 10, with one being the worst and 10 being the best.
