My advice to new users would be that using Symantec Data Center Security depends on your priorities. If stability and easy implementation are crucial, and you are fine with periodic updates, Symantec might be a good fit. However, if you prefer a tool that requires less ongoing attention and fewer updates, it is worth exploring other options. Consider the frequency of server activities – if they are infrequent, like every six months, Symantec might still be suitable with occasional support from service vendors. Ultimately, your decision should align with your specific needs and how much ongoing engagement you are willing to commit to. Overall, I would rate Symantec Data Center Security as a seven out of ten.

To navigate it effectively, expanding your skill set beyond just product knowledge and Symantec expertise is crucial. Investing in skills related to SQL and broadening your understanding of networks will prove beneficial. Familiarity with scripting becomes valuable in altering agent deployment methods, as the tool lacks a straightforward approach for this. Overall, I rate it eight out of ten.

Consultant at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees

We are just a customer.

I rate the solution six out of ten.

If you are a customer, you need to have a dedicated team who can maintain the product with the operating system upgrades. Otherwise, you will be facing some consequences.

You have to plan for the upgrade of the DCS tool first eventually. If you can plan out several reboots and maintenance of that product, and you have those admins who have a deep knowledge of the operating system, then this tool is very useful. It will go very well with the organization.

However, if you are a user who doesn't have that much technical knowledge of the operating system, you don't have any dedicated team, and you want some automation and require no physical effort required to check the logs, you'll have issues. You'll face a lot of problems and noise, and you will not be able to configure the policies according to the requirements. It will not be a good product for you.

The suitability of Symantec Data Center Security depends on the requirements and it is important to understand them in advance. If you are fine with the traditional way of detecting threats then this is a good solution. If not, then I would suggest using newer technology.

I would rate this solution a five out of ten.

Managing Director at a tech services company with 51-200 employees

We have several versions of the solution installed, and the version that we install depends on the compatibility with our platforms. We have an old release installed, and we have other editions installed, but that is not because of the product. It is because we can't have the same version for everything.

Our environment is made up of equipment acquired at different times. Some parts are two years old, while other components are the latest version. Now, we have different versions to handle everything.

The implementation becomes picky, but it does its job.

The vendor has not been focused on new features. Rather, they are keeping up with the newer platforms and newer versions that have been coming out. There have been times in the past when the products did not keep up with the code, and the product had lost its importance. The pace at which they were delivering was quite slow. Now, however, the changes are happening faster. As newer operating systems are coming up, the platform is being updated, which has made it rich enough to include the same security that you would expect for all versions.

Performance has never been an issue for this product. We have not found anything that is smaller than this. The question to ask is whether there is ease of use and whether there is platform coverage. This product works on Linux, Unix, and Windows, which is important because you want to use the same product for the whole data center.

Over time, we have seen this solution become less complex and easier to use.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.
