We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Reduces software cost. Reduces the risk of software audits.""My organization now understands what type of products they have: warranties, how long the warranties last, depreciation. We never really knew what our depreciation values were, so it was really nice to have that on hand as well. It gives us a better view of our hardware, which is really beneficial.""They're staying up to date as vendors make changes to how they want to manage the software. CA is usually really quick about getting those updates in the system.""Also, the software you have, you can monitor for end of life. If you have software that is end of life, then you can have it uninstalled and buy the new software, so you can make sure that you're not running into vulnerabilities with unsupported software in your environment.""Enables me to know where an asset is at any point during its lifecycle: How old it is, who it belongs to, and where it's at within that lifecycle.""Being able to determine the licensing position for existing vendors and future vendors. Also, visibility into our environment,""You could also look for software that is no longer being used and you can re-deploy the software, so then you save from a purchasing standpoint because you don't have to buy the software again.""You build the items one time and then you have your discovery that's coming in and the system will let you know whether or not you're out of compliance."

More IBM Tivoli Asset Management for IT Pros →

"The ability to make collections and deploy to them has been great.""It is easy to install, and quick to deploy.""With the right administrator, application deployment can do wonders.""Provides great insight into the functionalities of the data scope.""Microsoft is being very competitive right now, and they are really investing in a lot of new features to be more competitive in the marketplace.""There have to be made some improvement in WSUS and control in other non-Microsoft products updates.""It is a very good solution. It has a good interface and is easy to use. On top of that, it is very reliable in terms of distribution as well as getting the report.""Microsoft has done a good job with authentication solutions, such as single sign-on, or open authentication."

Cons
"I would like to see more control over audit trail features, where you can turn on and off fields.""CA SAM is not a CA product. The vendor is Aspera and CA is the distributor, so support is difficult. It's more difficult to get a good response.""The UI, even though they upgraded the UI, it's still kind of dated, it's a little bit convoluted to use. It's not like something that you can sit down and automatically understand how to use it.""CA Asset Portfolio Management can improve the uploading of batch information. I have to upload large amounts of information and it can take a long time to finish. There are some other solutions that are better, such as Micro Focus.""I'd like to see end-of-life information on software products.""I'd like to see more mobile. I'd like to have it actually manage mobile devices. It really doesn't, and I'd like to have a mobile application just for asset management.""It needs stronger rebooting components and the ability to develop our own software metrics.""Keeping the catalog updated and having more titles in the catalog is helpful, because the more items that are in the catalog, your process goes faster because you don't have to manually build all the entitlements."

More CA Asset Portfolio Management Cons →

"The solution’s initial setup is complex and technical support is not good enough."

More IBM Tivoli Asset Management for IT Cons →

"The solution does not support remote devices so the CMG is still required.""The deployment process is lengthy and should be quicker to complete.""Initial setup was complex. There's a lot that goes into it.""The database should be made to be more stable and robust, but not so much the configuration.""One area of improvement is regarding the patching of Office 365 products. We have some difficulties on this side, and it can be improved.""Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager can improve by allowing us to schedule the scripts, we don't have a script scheduling option and have to do it manually.""The tool's deployment is difficult. Microsoft needs to improve documentation with videos.""This solution should be simpler, and more consistent across modules/sections."

Pricing and Cost Advice

  • "IBM Tivoli Asset Management for IT is an expensive solution."
  • More IBM Tivoli Asset Management for IT Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Pricing and licensing are horrible. You have to not look at dollar value to use SCCM. It's super-duper expensive but it works. The acquisition cost is expensive, it's labor-intensive. But it works."
  • "Pricing and licensing are a downside of SCCM. It's expensive. I'd have to confirm this, but I think they changed the licensing to core-based instead of socket-based. It's not cheap, because you have to buy the software, you have to buy SQL. Another thing we learned from talking to Microsoft is that they provide you a license for SQL if you run it on the same box as the primary server. If you run it outside that box, you have to buy SQL. Microsoft does recommend you running it on the same box because of performance. But then, in order to run SQL, SCCM, and everything on the same box, you better have some resources. It's an expensive solution. There's no doubt about it."
  • "Overall, I think it's fine. It's pretty much in-line because there are ways to offset it with the Office 365 licensing."
  • "SCCM comes with its own version of SQL Server. If you use that SQL Server with SCCM and don't use it for another applications than you get an SQL Server for free."
  • "The licensing is good because they have various options, depending on what you are looking for."
  • "Pricing is negotiable with Microsoft, depending upon which of their packages you choose."
  • "When you compare this solution with other tools in the market you might actually find a lot of variation in the pricing and that's why people opt for the other tools rather than Microsoft tools."
  • "Its price is okay because it is part of our licensing."
