We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The solution is stable.""I manage software updates and operating systems for devices, and within seconds, we can remotely deploy a system for, say, 2,000 devices. Not only that, but we can also deploy scripts and create comprehensive compliance rules.""This solution has made life easy with respect to patching, compliance, and OSD.""Automation of operating system, application, and update deployments massively reduces IT operations effort.""It's a stable product.""I like Mircosoft's technical support. Microsoft has a few updates, like some of the critical KBs. They are published within the interval time, and in case of an escalation on the client missions, we will raise a ticket with the Microsoft team. They will create a hotfix or a critical update. They will chat with us, and that is one thing I like about Microsoft. Whenever any issues occur at my organization, they will help you out soon as possible within the SLA.""It uses detailed descriptions of the workstations, and that is good for me.""Technical support was helpful and responsive."

"The solution is scalable and helps to understand how infrastructure works. It helps to improve the health of the organization.""Tanium has made the process of detecting threats more proactive with its detection. So, the process is easier and more efficient.""The most valuable features of this solution are the consolidation of all historical data on device endpoints, security drivers, firmware, and Software version gaps.""For incident response tasks, all these tasks can get done in minutes with minimal disruption to the end-user.""The security features are very valuable.""Threat hunting is a very good feature on Tanium. We have just started using it and have not used it extensively.""Tanium’s linear-chain architecture is valuable.""Tanium's most valuable features are patch management, inventory, and distribution software."

More Tanium Pros →

"It is a great product. The SNMP protocol tracking feature is good. I really like how it tracks SNMP. The alerts are also great.""It can send messages to our ticketing system.""Zabbix can use old data to current data to set the threshold. We can use previous data to set the threshold.""We like the user-interface for this solution, which makes it an easy to use tool.""We value the auto-host discovery, template import, bulk import/export features. Newer versions also add nice features, such as multi-IP per host.""The solution is stable.""It has good graphs of what is going on within the operating system.""It has improved our server performance monitoring overall. We know right away when there are problems. It has built-in statistics, so we can go back and see if there's spiking. We can check what's happening every day around the same time and check the configuration to see if there's something that's running and needs to be fixed."

Cons
"The configuration of Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager could be improved, it is a bit complicated.""The solution can be improved by speeding up the synchronizing of the policies on the devices.""The solution does not support remote devices so the CMG is still required.""Could do with some cosmetic improvements on the user interface.""Troubleshooting in general needs improvement. There's just a ton of logs to go through, and so finding the error log that corresponds with that you're doing can sometimes be difficult.""In spite of us being a premier customer we find the support unsatisfactory.""SCCM should strive to enhance the accuracy of its reporting functions in order to avoid any issues with incorrect or inaccurate data.""SCCM can improve on third-party application support."

More Microsoft Configuration Manager Cons →

"They could improve the UI.""It is not really additional functions, or the features that are needed, rather the complexity would be reduced based on the number of modules required to put together a comprehensive operational security and risk compliance model.""The main issues are the network connection because different customers have issues with their networks. It's difficult implementing this type of solution because the network is the main feature in the architecture for these types of solutions. Tanium could improve by creating some network optimization.""The performance could improve in future releases. We have had performance issues in specialized web environments, but overall I think the problems are less than 2% of the computer systems being used.""Tanium's limitations should be improved because although it is a great tool, it is limited to only a few classes during a session.""We had some issues with the solution's OS upgrade.""The solution needs to improve the reporting and tracking capabilities.""Any movement into a SaaS solution has challenges since the processes and data flows are not well defined. Hence, you need to build it at the same time."

More Tanium Cons →

"Outside of the normal standard monitoring, I would like to extend patching, importing patching, and supporting patching for Windows Servers.""An area for improvement would be the ease of doing aggregation from the value or different devices.""I would like to see a more flexible mobile client, and better HA out of the box.""When we have a problem, we have to do a lot of research to solve it.""Zabbix does not draw automatic mapping of the network, this is something they should add in the future. There is a lot of effort that is involved in tailoring some of the settings which could be made easier.""The only improvement I would suggest, revolves around its AI and ML capabilities.""Implementing Zabbix is difficult. I've deployed many solutions over the years, and Zabbix is the hardest to implement. You have to do some development to get it to work with IBM, Micro Focus, or HP products.""Having a more customizable interface and dashboard would be an improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Pricing and licensing are horrible. You have to not look at dollar value to use SCCM. It's super-duper expensive but it works. The acquisition cost is expensive, it's labor-intensive. But it works."
  • "Pricing and licensing are a downside of SCCM. It's expensive. I'd have to confirm this, but I think they changed the licensing to core-based instead of socket-based. It's not cheap, because you have to buy the software, you have to buy SQL. Another thing we learned from talking to Microsoft is that they provide you a license for SQL if you run it on the same box as the primary server. If you run it outside that box, you have to buy SQL. Microsoft does recommend you running it on the same box because of performance. But then, in order to run SQL, SCCM, and everything on the same box, you better have some resources. It's an expensive solution. There's no doubt about it."
  • "Overall, I think it's fine. It's pretty much in-line because there are ways to offset it with the Office 365 licensing."
  • "SCCM comes with its own version of SQL Server. If you use that SQL Server with SCCM and don't use it for another applications than you get an SQL Server for free."
  • "The licensing is good because they have various options, depending on what you are looking for."
  • "Pricing is negotiable with Microsoft, depending upon which of their packages you choose."
  • "When you compare this solution with other tools in the market you might actually find a lot of variation in the pricing and that's why people opt for the other tools rather than Microsoft tools."
  • "Its price is okay because it is part of our licensing."

  • "There is an annual license required to use this solution."
  • "It's an expensive solution. It would be nice if the cost were lower."
  • "Tanium is a more expensive solution in Latin America than some of the competitors, such as BigFix."
  • "It is higher than some competitors in the market."
  • "The solution offers value for money."
  • "The solution is expensive but it's a good investment."
  • "The product's pricing differs from region to region depending on negotiations and the number of endpoints."

  • "It’s free of cost."
  • "It is a true open-source solution, so there are no licensing costs."
  • "The product is an open source and free solution."
  • "It's free software released under the GNU/GPL license."
  • "There are no licenses."
  • "We’re using the free version, which covers all our current needs."
  • "It is free, which allows us to reduce costs."

I have researched a quite a few network monitoring tools which can be used for various monitoring purposes of not only the servers, but the intermediate routers as well. There are majorly three types of these softwares. Ones which are completely open-source, you can do almost anything you want using these, but they require quite some expertise before you can use them. Then there are the ones that are not open source, the enterprise softwares and cost you some money, but on the other hand, they are extremely easy to set-up and learn. You can have them up and running in a matter of minutes. And then there are those which are completely cloud based. They can be free of cost or charge some money depending on the software. The good thing about these is that you don’t have to install any extra software, and it can be managed completely online but then again these have limited features and you cannot exploit them to the full extent as you can do with the open-source and to some extent the enterprise software, so I won’t suggest you to use these, because these are generally not the complete solutions and require other support software to achieve the same. Below I have listed the outstanding pros and cons of the various Network analyzers that you can look into Nagios Pros: Nagios offers an extensive set of collector plug-ins that allows users to gather performance and availability data from a broad range of operating systems, including  Windows and Netware Nagios… Read more →
