We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Before VSAN, hypervisor configuration changes and updates resulted in VM outages. Now, downtime is dramatically reduced.""Having the ability to migrate machines live in our environment was made possible by this software.""Highly available storage is the most valuable feature. The entire rollout is hyper-converged and requires no extra storage further than the hosts in which Hyper-V is running. Another feature that has been great is the support from StarWind in general. We have their proactive support package on the main cluster that employs Starwind Virtual SAN.""It's quite easy to manage.""This has helped to improve the reliability of service and operation in all departments, without having to stop in case of emergency situations.""Using our own choice of HW allowed us to price our service to answer our customers' needs.""Immediately we noticed huge performance gains, even on older hardware and once we implemented a 10GB link between both servers, the sync was near-instant after the initial sync was complete.""The product has improved the ability to mimic physical SAN environments to demo scenarios and troubleshoot problems."

"The product is easy to manage and flexible for upgrading without major changes.""Cisco HyperFlex HX has improved the way our organization functions in the way that the time to deliver a VM takes me five minutes. In comparison, my cloud team's response is a couple of days based on all their overhead policies, procedures, and ticket requests. This is substantial.""The storage system is its most valuable feature. It has eliminated our entire need for having to worry about storage. We were storing a lot of syslog data and using a lot of templates in our data center. With the storage system, we are now saving an enormous amount of space.""The product is stable. No one complains about the stability, which is fabulous.""The integration between the storage and the server applications is the most valuable feature of this solution. It cuts down on the necessity to buy a secondary storage system.. It saves money in the long-run.""It's easy to get the tool started.""Cisco HyperFlex is helping us to put everything in centrally so that we can manage in one place.""We are providing this solution for the customer or converting the customer from a traditional environment to a hyper-converged environment which consolidates all management and support on a single port. This is the main benefit of using the hyper-converged versus the traditional."

"Integration with vCenter WebClient services and Cisco UCS Ecosystem, as it gives a Single Pane Of Management which lowers administration-cost (improving TCO)."

Cons
"I would definitely like to see quite a bit more on the monitoring side of things.""This solution should be more self-sufficient, running without creating domains or failover clusters.""This product would benefit from having automated alerting functionality.""The cluster configuration is time-consuming and tedious.""I'd love to see more clarification for us folks who are smart enough to do some damage yet not smart enough to use CLI.""Perhaps the developer should refine the product management through PowerShell.""A web management interface would be good, especially for those coming from other solutions that have one.""They need to invest more in the support documents for real issues happening when integrating the solution with the hypervisor."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"If we compare it with VMware, the VMware product is basically very open, and it can be easily integrated with any platform. VMware product is also available on the cloud and is not an appliance-based product, whereas Cisco HyperFlex is an appliance-based product. Companies that want to use HCI as a platform or as a service would prefer something without an appliance. A SaaS-based product is better for a customer who is using the cloud and has multiple resources, workflows, and devices on the cloud and wants to go for a hyper-converged solution. This is where improvement is needed. In addition to an appliance-based product, Cisco should provide a SaaS-based product. Its price should be lower. Cisco needs to work on the pricing model for this product. Its price is a big road blocker when competing against Nutanix and VMware, which are its main competitors.""The deployment could be made a little bit easier, as we still seem to struggle with it a little bit for a day or so to get it running.""We are working with a lot of different technologies and trying to manage them with one tool. The API could be improved for better integration with other systems.""They should give us a little more information about how to use the CLI and offer more commands.""I would like a lighter product; something which can be carried by a mere human. The typical size still looks like a stack of data center-sized servers, which is typically fine, but not so good if you want to carry it around.""In the next release, I would like to see them able to connect to the public cloud.""I would have liked it to be able to back up the system to a cloud, to be able to work from any other place""Lacks some integration and documentation could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "Cisco is quite expensive, but not in the initial first buy."
  • "Pricing is better if you buy more Cisco products."
  • "The pricing is a bit expensive."
  • "For customers in the private sector, this product can have a very high return on investment."
  • "If you don't look at the costs of the systems, the scalability is quite good."
  • "The price is a bit high. It could be better, but the product is worth the cost."
  • "I would like the pricing to be cheaper."
  • "Comparable solutions with switches, storage, and services are cheaper than HyperFlex. It should be cheaper."
