We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
The performance is most important to me, and it helps our ability to make business decisions quickly. We are able to execute very complex queries. Over 90 percent of our query executions are one second or less. We do millions of queries everyday. The underlying hardware that IBM provides with this appliance is made for a specific purpose, to serve performance on a large amount of data, and to do analytics as well. It is faster, when you compare it to any other product.

It is a reliable database warehouse solution that is transparent to the end user. The performance of the solution is impeccable. The solution has very robust integrity due to how it is designed and implemented.On-prem, Oracle is the number one database technology. The feature that I worked with and that excited me the most is one that is not available in other databases, and it involves the use of Java Runtime. From a database product perspective, I would say, they're good in what they provide. There's not much concern. The reliability is the solution's most valuable feature. We've had great success with the solution. We find technical support to be very responsive. They briefly describe everything on phone and we handle the operations. I'd say we've been more than satisfied with their level of service. They're quite helpful and knowledgeable.

Cons
The scalability is not as expected. The capacity in the black box is not enough. Our main problem with it is concurrency. When there are too many users running Netezza at the same time, this is when we have the most complaints. We are not able to scale. The only way to scale is to get another appliance, but we have a customers who would need us to hydrate the data between the two appliances, and Netezza does not do that. The only issue is that it's not expandable.

The pricing is the one sticking point for the solution because it is very expensive. While working with 20-30 terabytes is okay using this solution, if you have Big Data, data that's much bigger than that, you will run into issues. It's a problem I have right now. They should support much more data. The solution can be quite expensive for small and medium-sized enterprises. Not too many companies can actually afford the pricing.Oracle needs to improve its cluster technologies. They need to improve in the cluster technology using ARC due to the fact that sometimes people think that they have a redundant server when they are using ARC with the cluster and think that will increase the performance. In reality, if they are using ii with a big workload, sometimes the performance is not increasing, and can sometimes actually impacts it in such a way that there's some degradation in the performance. The integration with other vendor solutions needs improvement. It is difficult to connect to other hardware. If their database encryption features could come in bytes, that would be a major improvement. They should bring the encryption model to their standard databases as well. The main thing we find could use improvement is the licensing costs. It is quite expensive relative to other database vendors. Cost always comes up as an issue for us as we consider upgrade paths. It's not as easy as we would like it to be.We don't really find that any features are lacking.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The pricing is very expensive. It has a lot CPUs with a lot of components in it. It also has built-in redundancy for resiliency reasons.Netezza is a costly solution. It does serve a specific purpose but it's costlier than what's available in the market, if you go to the cloud.

The pricing is something that Oracle should work on to make the product more affordable, especially to businesses in third-world countries. Our licensing costs are between $40,000 and $50,000 per year. Those are the costs that cover maintenance and licensing. It is an excellent product, as long as the organization can afford the price tag.
