Executive Summary
Updated on Mar 15, 2022

We performed a comparison between Microsoft Powerapps and Oracle Application Express (APEX) based on our users’ reviews in four categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: Microsoft PowerApps users feel the solution is user-friendly, straightforward, and very easy to set up. You do not need to be an expert to deploy Microsoft PowerApps. Oracle Application Express (APEX) users felt the setup was neither easy or complex, but somewhere in the middle. You do have to have some level of technical expertise to get this solution deployed properly.
  • Features: Microsoft PowerApps users liked the flexibility of the solution and how simple it is to create an app from start to finish. Microsoft PowerApps offers the Model-driven or Canvas application-making platforms that make the entire process go very fast. Microsoft PowerApps users tell us the solution can be a bit buggy, though, and needs some refinement to ensure things consistently run smoothly. The threshold limits could be improved, as they can be very constricting and problematic.

Oracle APEX users like that the solution is very stable, scalable, secure, and helps keep their teams very productive. You don’t need to know PL, because Oracle APEX is built on PL/SQL. Oracle APEX users felt the solution could be buggy, though, and felt that some of the HTML code generated did not work well with all browsers. Oracle APEX users would like to see improved reporting and better integration with non-Oracle databases.
  • Pricing: Users of both solutions felt the prices are on the high side.

  • Service and Support: Users of both solutions were satisfied with the support they received and mentioned that both of these solutions offer very good online and community support, making it super easy to resolve any issues very quickly.

Comparison Results: Microsoft PowerApps finished ahead in this comparison. Microsoft PowerApps offers slightly better integrations with 3rd party applications and is considered to be more user-friendly. As Microsoft is a very popular ecosystem with many of our users, it is the simple choice for better seamless integration. Oracle’s APEX limitations outside of the Oracle universe presented too many challenges for our users.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Ability to generate QR codes and scan barcodes.""I can have a SharePoint list and connect with users through PowerApps to present the information.""The most valuable feature is the simple data connectivity components.""It's a very workable solution because it's an automated way of making applications. You have a template, you have the application know-how,""It is easy to use.""You can easily connect Power Apps with other databases, like Excel, SharePoint, SQL, etc.""It is very easy for us to implement. We have a Microsoft ecosystem, and this solution has many components for integration.""Microsoft PowerApps allows you to simplify business processes and user experience. You can also create responsive applications and canvas apps through this solution. It's an easy to scale, stable, and low-code solution."

"It provides attractive GUIs allowing professionally-styled applications without the need to know HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.""The product is fast.""This product will speed up development time with helpful production aids.""One of the most valuable features is the ability to build very fast data-driven UIs.""I like how we can actively develop and customize APEX because it's on the same database.""The database is super easy to use for creating tables.""The valuable features are charts, reports, and search engines.""What's most valuable in Oracle Application Express (APEX) is its secure coding functionality, and the solution also has good features."

Cons
"When it comes to PowerApps, debugging can be difficult at times. It would be beneficial to simplify it.""Microsoft PowerApps could improve the speed of Power Automate, it is not very fast.""PowerApps can't do a lot of things that users need now. For example, it can't handle signatures.""Technical support could be faster, and more accurate.""You can't add too many filters onto anything you build, otherwise, it will be very slow and it will affect your performance.""When we talk of integrating with external applications, that's one area where, even today, I had to loop in my code developers. If this area can be streamlined so that my techno-functional consultants, who are on-site, can immediately start working on something without the assistance of developers, that would be ideal.""The user interface is pretty good, although it is a little bit clunky and can be improved.""The availability of templates needs to be improved. I understand that the ecosystem around it is still developing, but we need more templates. I would like the entire ecosystem around it to improve. I would recommend adding AI components. Even though we can always connect to Azure for AI components, they should slowly start looking at adding some AI components to PowerApps so that out-of-the-box learning can be applied to process flows. Salesforce has the Einstein layer that works along with license platforms. PowerApps should also have something similar."

More Microsoft Power Apps Cons →

"The solution’s pricing is high if you use it on the OCA platform. It’s also a little bit costly. However, if we use it on an on-premises Oracle database, the pricing is cheaper.""The product must provide more triggers.""It would be beneficial to include WebSockets so that you can see real-time updates.""It can only be deployed on Oracle Database.""I've experienced some difficulties when using Oracle Application Express (APEX), particularly when I'm designing forms. For example, when I design a form, I add buttons and controls, but I'm unable to visualize how it'll look unless I run it. You want to design and do things your way, but if you don't have much experience, then you'll find that designing in Oracle Application Express (APEX) is a little complicated. This won't be a problem with anyone more experienced, though. If I wanted to create my design, for example, a different table format or some background images, it becomes a problem, and this is an area for improvement in Oracle Application Express (APEX). Designing should be easier, even for less experienced users. An additional feature I'd like to see in Oracle Application Express (APEX) is more plugins, particularly a repository that contains a lot of plugins, so you can go to that repository and download whichever you like and use it or add it to your project. Right now, I create my plugins, so it would be helpful if Oracle Application Express (APEX) has a repository of plugins people can use, download from anywhere in the world, and integrate into projects.""Oracle is more of a database-oriented solution and is not very flexible in app development.""When exporting, we can't export dynamic reports, only static reports. For example, when we want to export charts or tables it is only exported as a static report so we can't drop down on these reports; however, we can see this information when we are on the dashboard itself.""Connections to the application pages are not handled well and at times more than one user can be accessing an application with the same ID."

    Overview

Microsoft Power Apps is a rapid application development software and low-code development platform. The solution consists of a suite of apps, services, connectors, and a data platform. It provides an environment for building custom apps which is suitable for different businesses.

Microsoft Power Apps allows users to not only build applications, but also connect them to Microsoft's other sources, including the underlying data platform Microsoft Dataverse, as well as online and on-premise sources such as SharePoint, Dynamics 365, and Microsoft 365. The applications built using Microsoft Power Apps have a responsive design that makes them suitable for work in browsers and on mobile applications on different devices.

The no-code side of the product makes it suitable for complete beginners to app building, allowing them to easily create fully functional applications with many features. The solution also has a specialized platform for developers where specialists can access data and metadata, create custom connectors, integrate with external data, and apply business logic. The solution allows users to create three types of apps: canvas, model-driven, and portal. They are made using:

    • Power Apps Studio: Canvas apps are designed through Power Apps Studio. This app designer is suitable for complete beginners, as the app creation process resembles the building of presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint.

    • App Designer: Model-driven apps are created through App Designer. The creation process allows users to define the sitemap and add components to build the application.

    • Power Apps Portals Studio: This is a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) design tool. It is suitable for portal applications, as it allows users to add and configure web pages, forms, components, and lists.

    • AI automation: The tool has a feature that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI). It provides users with an AI builder and pre-built AI components to facilitate the application building process.

    • APIs feature: Microsoft Power Apps facilitates the app-building process through application program interfaces (APIs).
