Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is that it's a VMware environment.""The installation of Veeam Agent is straightforward.""This is a reliable system that supports Veeam backup and recovery for Windows.""The solution is meeting all of our client's requirements. It has good performance.""It is good and easy to use for backing up physical servers. It is working fine, and it is stable and scalable.""The product is free to use. We don't have to pay for a license.""I like working on the Azure platform.""I love Veeam because it is very easy to work with."

"Its automation and the ability to replicate and keep an RTO of just seconds is valuable. It is all automatic. Everything is pretty transparent on the backend. It is just point-and-go.""Failover using Zerto is simply a one-button click, and it does everything else in restoring the VMs at a different datacenter (recovery site).""It reduced the time for DR tests from the infrastructure side. Being able to get our work done in a matter of a couple of minutes so the app teams can get to work and can do their testing has been significant.""You can set the number of days a VM can be rolled back in case of corruption or virus infection.""Its ease of use is most valuable. The online documentation is very clear and helpful. We are able to solve a lot of problems on our own without having to contact support.""The most valuable features are the continuous streaming, that it takes very little CPU usage — it doesn't affect production — and the recovery time is very short.""The ability to test which virtual machines can be failed over to our DR site without interruption of our production environment.""We have seen ROI. It reduced the time for failover and failback by 90%."

Cons
"In the next release, I would like to see it easier to implement.""An area that this solution could be improved would be with the licensing.""It is not always easy to update this solution to the newer version, so the update process needs to be improved.""I would like to have a more automated installation process.""The solution lacks instant recovery.""It fulfills our needs in terms of features. In terms of improvements, they can maybe improve its documentation.""I am not very impressed by the technical support I received when I had an issue.""I've found a lot of difficulties on the initial setup and especially in terms of credentials. We really need a Window OS. It doesn't like the domain admin account. it's a primary permission issue."

More Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows [EOL] Cons →

"The improvement that I would like to see is a little bit easier product knowledge, things like that. It's getting a lot better than it was before because it's not as old of a product as Cisco, but if you look for something like Cisco routing and networking, you'll find millions of articles out there and it's everywhere.""We had a situation where we had to relicense VMs once they were moved over. We later found out that that feature is built-in, but it's not easy to find. The way it's done is that you have to go to the target site to turn it on. If that were explained a little bit better up front, that would be helpful.""In future releases, doing backups of the environment we need to be able to do hot backups of the database.""We'd like to be able to migrate data without its operating system or any other functionality and without having to go through a virtual machine or server.""Zerto's effect on our RPO can be improved.""The biggest pain points we have experienced are related to some of the SQL-intensive workloads just because the VPGs struggle a little bit to keep up. That might be because we are pushing too many transactions.""Customer service and technical support need improvement.""We're an NSX-T shop, and if I could get an NSX-T integration where it could manage the networks a little tighter, that would be an improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Our licensing fees are on a yearly basis."
  • "Pricing is based on license packaging and duration. Longer term licenses are less per year and license packages also offer a discount."
  • "There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees, and pricing can be a disadvantage or a weakness for this solution."
  • "We purchased a three-year license, and I think that the prices are ok."
  • "The pricing is good."
  • "The licensing fees are billed on a yearly basis, and the fees are much lower than what I pay for NetBackup."
  • "The pricing model is based on CPU and must be declared as Microsoft or VMware licensing."
  • "We have a cloud provider agreement with Veeam. We are also paying for the agent."
  • More Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows [EOL] Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Pricing depends on your future growth. Start small and then scale up."
  • "Zerto’s licensing model has changed a bit over the last year and they are in alignment with others. It is pretty simple and more economical."
  • "Licensing is based on the number of VMs to replicate. The first thing should be to get the number of VMs to replicate based on your business needs."
  • "Licensing is VM based so you can buy packages or single VM. Price is not low but the power of application is high, so you will get your money back."
  • "It's a little bit expensive."
  • "We believe the pricing, setup costs, and licensing are easy to understand. The pricing seems very reasonable."
  • "The solution is very cost-effective and very easy to set-up but does not compromise on features."
  • "While we find the twenty-five VM license somewhat inflexible, the actual setup costs are minimal as the product is so easy to install."

    Overview

What is Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows?

Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows is a robust, trusted data protection and recovery solution for both physical and virtual machines. This solution can be used to safeguard all kinds of machines and devices, such as desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. Veeam Agent for Windows can easily be installed on all Windows-based physical servers, workstations, desktops, and virtual machines, and works well in either a standalone or managed mode.

It is widely understood that all users should back up all stored data on a regularly scheduled basis to protect all important data. In the event of a data disaster, data can easily be restored from the backup using this solution and one would never have to experience a loss of important information. Users can implement Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows to perform regularly scheduled backups automatically, or manually, as needed. Users can choose to back up individual folders and files, designate particular computer files, or even the entire computer image.

Backups can be saved in several different locations, such as:

    • Cloud Repository (Veeam Cloud Connect)
    • Backup Repository (Veeam Backup Server)
    • Network Shared Folder
    • Local Computer Drive
    • Removable Storage Device (USB, CD, DVD, etc)
    • Microsoft OneDrive

Veeam Agent for Windows users are able to:

    • Create a Veeam Recovery Media file on an external hard drive, CD/DVD/BD, internal hard drive, or choose to establish an ISO file using Veeam Recovery Media on disk.
    • Create a comprehensive system image backup and securely back up chosen computer volumes or specific personal folders with files. Users have the option to store backups in a network shared folder on an external hard drive, or use the Veeam backup repository, Veeam Cloud Connect Repository, or Microsoft OneDrive.

Veeam Data restore offers two options:

    • Volume-level restore: Veeam Agent is able to restore the complete content of the entire volume. The solution retrieves the data blocks pertaining to the designated volumes and copies them to the desired location. A volume can then be restored to a new location or its original location.

    • File-Level Restore: Veeam Agent will use Veeam’s proprietary driver to publish backup content safely to a user's computer file system. Users can then access the content user Veeam’s Virtual Disk Driver (VDK), which is included with the solution. Users can then easily browse and copy the desired files and folders to use as desired.

    Veeam Recovery Media

Veeam Agent for Windows allows users to create a complete recovery image of their computer using Veeam Recovery Media. This image contains all data necessary to run Microsoft Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) while supplying a viable option to run users’ computer systems.

    Reviews From Real Users:

We use Veeam Agent for security as well as to ensure we have a backup should the server or discs fatally die. We are a small company with just one building, we want to be sure that should a server be gone we have a backup in the cloud so that we can survive.” - Director at a tech services company

“The compatibility of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows with other solutions is good. Its integration with other solutions is also good. I also find the product user-friendly.” - Business Development Manager at a tech services company.

Zerto, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company, specializes in data protection and empowers customers to run a business by simplifying the protection, disaster recovery, and mobility of on-premises and cloud applications. Zerto uses advanced hybrid cloud IT technologies to recover and protect business-critical applications in on-premises and cloud environments, enabling them to deliver continuous service without compromising security. Zerto’s foundation is based on continual data protection (CDP) technology. Users can benefit from a single, unified, and automated recovery and data management experience across all virtualized or container-based workloads.

Zerto's native clustering technology creates a resilient, fault-tolerant system that automates recovery of critical virtual machines while supporting software updates, new OS releases, and upgrades. With native clustering, a creation, migration, or deletion of a virtual machine is automatically replicated to all nodes in the cluster. This creates an automated failover and availability solution with the features of high-end dedicated servers running at a fraction of the cost.

    Zerto Features

Zerto has many valuable key features. Some of the most useful ones include:

    • Continuous data security
      • Continuous replication
      • The industry's lowest RPOs and fastest RTOs
      • App and database protection and recovery on a granular level
    • Agility across hybrid and multi-cloud
      • Protection between clouds
      • Simple on-premises to cloud migration
      • User-friendly native cloud services
    • Simple to scale
      • Automation and orchestration are built-in
      • Cross-platform, multi-site analytics
      • Unified experience regardless of cloud
    • Software-based
      • Hardware, hypervisor, and cloud are all independent
      • No physical appliances
      • Future-proof

    Zerto Benefits

    • Robust disaster recovery: Continuous data protection enables recovery of entire clusters, multi-VM applications, or even a single server with the lowest RPOs and fastest RTOs. Zerto allows users to safeguard, manage, and recover all of their key digital assets, whether they’re recovering to a secondary location, the public cloud, or a managed service provider.
    • Constant backup: Instead of making backups every 12 or 24 hours, Zerto creates backups every 5-15 seconds. Zerto backup has no impact on production and eliminates the burden of micromanaging backup windows by using CDP instead of snapshots. Its backup provides immediate recovery of data, folders, or virtual machines (VMs) that are only seconds behind the original, which is a simple approach to completely avoid ransomware or erase inadvertent deletions.
    • Strong long-term retention: Send data to the cloud or a purpose-built storage appliance of your choice for months or years of retention. These long-term copies can be made from local backups or DR replicas, and they can be kept wherever is most convenient for your company. Its powerful indexing and search makes discovering and restoring data simple. For data you want to maintain but only use infrequently, use cost-effective cloud tiering to shift LTR copies from hot to cold to deep-freeze storage.

    Reviews from Real Users

Zerto stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Two major ones are its disaster recovery abilities and its ease of use. PeerSpot users take note of the advantages of these features in their reviews:

Justin C., Director of IT at Arnott Inc. writes of the solution, “If we had to deal with a ransomware event, Zerto would be one of the first things I would use, because it is going to be the fastest to restore data to a certain point. If there were a fire in our building, Zerto would be a big thing too, because we would shut down everything that's in our building… It's definitely going to be one of our prevalent DRBC layers of protection."

Brad W., Vice President of Information Technology at a financial services firm, notes, “The file restoration is very helpful. They've improved it over the years to make it a lot more user-friendly and easy to do, which I appreciate. So, we use that quite a bit. The failover process is quite simple and intuitive. Even the configuration and setup are pretty easy to do.”
