We did, and we switched due to the latency, technology, and cost.

We did it in-house.

What was our ROI?

It's huge.

This was large POC track and the others were -

Stability at a price that we expect, but the non-standard dimensions create challenges
Pros and Cons
  • "In the 20 days that we have been using this solution, it has been stable."
  • "The most difficult part about Nimble was the fact that it didn't have a standard length."

What is our primary use case?

We will be using this solution for virtualizing specific workloads that we have.

What needs improvement?

The most difficult part about Nimble was the fact that it didn't have a standard length. It had a prolonged length to standard servers, which made it slightly challenging to get it installed and we had to switch racks around.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using HPE Nimble Storage for 20 days.

We are still in the installation phase, but will probably be using the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In the 20 days that we have been using this solution, it has been stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

From what we have investigated, it's pretty scalable.

The preliminary test shows that it does what we want it to do. We will continue using this solution in the future.

We have approximately 20 users in our organization.

How are customer service and technical support?

We have not contacted the technical support yet.

How was the initial setup?

We have a team of five to maintain this product.

What about the implementation team?

We had an HPE engineer install this solution. We purchased the installation package with it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would classify it as an expensive product. It's a high-end product.

It's quite expensive, but it's what you would expect from a storage box.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated Pure Storage FlashArray and IBM Storwize, which is now called IBM Flash Array.

What other advice do I have?

This is a solution that I would recommend to others who are interested in using it.

I would rate HPE Nimble Storage a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

InfoSight gives us visibility for our capacity planning.

What is most valuable?

The single feature that is valuable is InfoSight and the visibility it gives us for our capacity planning.

How has it helped my organization?

It has allowed us to enhance the recovery and deployment of our infrastructure.

What needs improvement?

It would be beneficial for Nimble to have an NVVM and/or an all-flash solution.

Currently Nimble’s All Flash solution is SSD disk based. Nimble should investigate in having their All Flash Solution with NVM Ram (similar to HP) or memory storage similar to Violin Storage.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Nimble Storage for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The issue with scalability is that I can’t expand to more than six arrays with one controller.

How are customer service and technical support?

I give technical support 4.5/5.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The previous solution was very complex.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would like to suggest a price reduction seeing that there are similar products in the market. The licensing should not be touched.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at HPE 3PAR and Dell EMC.

What other advice do I have?

If you don’t have a storage team, this product is right for you.

Easy to configure and view information of the system's health.

What is most valuable?

Easy to configure and view information of the system's health.

We do not need a dedicated staff member to handle the system we deploy. A regular infrastructure person that attends the Nimble training course will be able to handle the system.

How has it helped my organization?

Less manpower overhead to manage the storage.

What needs improvement?

Scalability, see below.

For how long have I used the solution?

The company has been using Nimble Storage for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We haven't had any issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We're not able to increase space on a small scale, each increase is pretty big.

How is customer service and technical support?

Good and responsive.

How was the initial setup?

Simple, it can be setup and ready to use within the same business day of delivery.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing is decent.

What other advice do I have?

It depends on your infrastructure specialist, the very technically advanced specialists will prefer something that is not so user friendly. They would prefer more configuration options where only people with the technical know-how will be able to look after the system. Nimble is very easy to work with. Simple technical skilled personnel will be able to handle the system.

Nice review. We are a Nimble shop as well with 8 arrays. The management aspect of these is really great and almost a set it and forget it scenario. They are great with Support calls and InfoSight is the most valuable tool there is out there with improvements all the time. For the space increase are you referring to upgrading the drives or cache?  Or is it a volume level increase for a VM? Be sure if using VMware to have the NCM installed on all hosts to manage the connections as it works great.

It provides good performance, ease of use and ease of administration.

What is most valuable?

It provides good performance, ease of use and ease of administration. The usage statistics, the cloud and their info site are all very good.

How has it helped my organization?

It's easier to administer than other storage solutions so that gives us agility to implement storage services.

What needs improvement?

Let's see, well you already have the old flash, I felt that was missing but, I don't know. It's a very good solution but the price is not the best, probably better pricing would be good but yes, it's a good solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We didn't encounter any issues with stability. It's good, very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I haven't had the need to scale it, but it has good scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

Now that I remember I didn't use the technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

This was a new project where we needed a storage solution and we evaluated Nimble among others and we decided to go with Nimble.

How was the initial setup?

I wasn't involved in the initial set up.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated some others but I'd rather not say which vendors. The features of the product, stability, performance, support and cost are important to us.

What other advice do I have?

Try the solution, it's pretty straightforward to use and very easy to manage.

I strongly recommend everybody switching from traditional capacity-licensing models to Box-license

What is most valuable?

All features.

How has it helped my organization?

  • Predictive performance
  • 1/4 of a data center footprint than traditional SAN
  • Predictive and flexible capacity/performance scaling
  • Box license, unlimited snapshots/replications
  • Better overview/monitoring/transparency in infrastructure
  • Interoperability with other infrastructure elements

What needs improvement?

Further improvements on existing features, always.

For how long have I used the solution?

Approximately one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No.

How are customer service and technical support?

Nimble technical support is only level 3, best support experienced compared to any other SAN platforms.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously used EMC VPLEX, VNX , XtremIO , IBM DS8800, and Storwize.

We switched because traditional SAN solutions are outdated and inefficient.

What about the implementation team?

Very easy to set up, approximately 10 mins per system.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I strongly recommend everybody switching from traditional capacity-licensing models, to Box-license.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

What other advice do I have?

Try it.
