Useful customization, highly scalable, and plenty of features
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution has good customization abilities and plenty of features."
  • "In an upcoming release, the reporting could be more user-friendly. For example, the reporting in graphs and charts for the host can be cumbersome."

What is our primary use case?

We are a small business and we use pfSense as our interface for the WAN. We use it for a Firewall and to ensure that all devices are operating. It provides our basic network routing needs, reporting on usage, such as IDS, and for managing individuals on network devices for controlling bandwidth and destinations.

How has it helped my organization?

Our security in our organization was previously provided by our ISP and since we have been using pfSense it has provided me more abilities to manage my network in a secure way. We have much better controls and security.

What is most valuable?

The solution has good customization abilities and plenty of features.

What needs improvement?

As an IT leader, it would be a benefit to have a mobile application to have certain features, such as mobile application notifications when a new device is added, or the ability to turn off or on firewall policies. Having these simple features would be very convenient and reduce the need to have to log into the console. I can use a web browser on my phone to access the pfSense site but I would prefer to have an application where I can toggle things, such as the policies. Some simple features within a mobile application would be valuable to me. I have evaluated other solutions and have determined this feature does not currently exist. However, Untangle has an application but it was not enough to compel me to change at this point.

In an upcoming release, the reporting could be more user-friendly. For example, the reporting in graphs and charts for the host can be cumbersome.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using pfSense for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is very good. My only complaint is when there is a power outage pfSense requires a manual reset.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of this solution is perfect.

I am the administrator of the solution and the rest of my organization are end-users.

How are customer service and support?

I have not needed to contact technical support. I have not had any problems with pfSense.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. The whole process took approximately eight hours and one hour of that was in front of the computer using the keyboard.

What about the implementation team?

We did the implementation of the solution ourselves.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated Untangle.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to the IT manager is to do your research, and make sure that pfSense meets your needs. If you are not technical enough, then looking at other solutions. pfSenseis needs a bit more tech-savvy IT manager to manage it. It is a very important business tool for me.

I rate pfSense an eight out of ten.

I rated pfSense an eight because it did everything I wanted it to do which makes it an awesome solution but not a ten because of a few minor shortcomings. However, I recognize it is open-source and it is not going to have everything.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Pros and Cons
  • "The VPN is my favorite feature."
  • "The main problem with pfSense is that we have to use proxy solutions."

What is our primary use case?

We have solutions from 10 to 5,000 users. One person alone can manage the firewall.

What is most valuable?

The VPN is my favorite feature. pfSense is very easy to use. The interface and configuration capabilities are great.

What needs improvement?

The main problem with pfSense is that we have to use proxy solutions. They don't have features like Layer 7 filtration. We can't filter based on applications. For this reason, we need to work with solutions from Cisco like OpenAPPID that help pfSense understand similar applications. For example, if I have to block WhatsApp, I need to use a third-party solution like OpenAPPID to help it understand what WhatsApp is. This capability is not native to pfSense, so I have to use another solution, like an add-on. I think that the proxy is the main problem with pfSense.

pfSense doesn't implement SD-WAN solutions. Competitors have this feature. If pfSense began doing this, it would be a big improvement.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability is great. That's a strong point.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, it's great. Often, we need to research and assess the size of an appliance in order to understand what kind of environment the firewall is going to protect. From here, we have the possibility to do an upgrade depending on the type of model.

There is the option to have a firewall that is entry-level or a firewall that supports a huge internet service provider. We have many solutions that we can apply to our customer's environments, but first, we need to do these assessments in order to help us choose the right appliance. One appliance simply can't be upgraded to cover this entire spectrum of needs or the size of demand. This is why we must perform these special assessments.

How was the initial setup?

Although it's not quite pre-configured, it is ready to use, straight away. It's so easy to put it to work. We had to do some configurations, mainly related to security issues. Configuring rules for monitoring had to be done, but otherwise, it's ready to go, out of the box.

Only one person is required to deploy this solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

pfSense is a free solution.

What other advice do I have?

Before deciding to go with this solution, make sure to evaluate the features to ensure that pfSense will cover your needs. pfSense is very strong in some areas, but it has some difficulty in others. It's a good solution, but it all depends on what you expect from the firewall.

If you need the firewall to implement security in your network, then pfSense is better than the competition in terms of price. It will cover all of your basic needs for far less money than similar products that cost five to ten times more money.

Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give pfSense a rating of nine.

Flexible with a straightforward setup and great plugins
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup is straightforward."
  • "If you want to take advantage of all of the solution's options, you need to have a bit of a technical background. It's not for a layperson."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for security. It's a firewall.

What is most valuable?

The solution is an excellent open-source product. It has a big community around it as well. Out of those few points, you'll come up to a situation whereby you can avoid the vendor lock-in. Since there is a big community, you can count on reliability. There are lots of installations and lots of people who understand how everything works.

The solution offers excellent flexibility. You can either install pfSense just on a machine, on your local PC, or you can buy an appliance. You can even buy your own hardware and install it on your own. Of course, if you choose that route, you need to have a technical expert on your team. For us, as a software company, that's not a problem.

There are plugins you can add to the product if you want even more useability. You can even add more security functionality.

The initial setup is straightforward.

What needs improvement?

We did have a strange issue with an update at one point, however, that was resolved quickly.

If you want to take advantage of all of the solution's options, you need to have a bit of a technical background. It's not for a layperson.

You do get a good solution for free. However, the trade-off is you need to be technical to really take advantage of it.

The installation could potentially be faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

I haven't been using the solution for very long at this point. It may be somewhere around three to five months. It hasn't been long.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's excellent.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is excellent. We don't have any issues as far as that is concerned.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to pfSense, we used Cisco.

How was the initial setup?

The implementation is not complex. It's very straightforward to initiate. A company should have no problems with the process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

As an open-source solution, it is free to use as you see fit.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I didn't evaluate the solution against other more expensive commercial tools.

What other advice do I have?

We are just customers and end-users.

The solution is an open-source platform. We are a software company and we like open-source. Lots of people say open-source means that you need to install it on your own. They will see that as a limitation, however, we see that as the other way around.

I'd recommend the solution to other organizations and users. It's open-source, it's flexible, and has a strong community. You can use it in many different ways, either in a small installation, laptop, PC, or on a machine, or you can buy an appliance or you can even buy your own hardware and configure it in a different way. The software as such is free and you have a lot of options as to how you want to use it.

I'd rate the solution at a ten out of ten. It's been very good for us

The most valuable features are the open VPN capabilities and the firewall service.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features for me and my current company are the open VPN capabilities and the firewall service.

How has it helped my organization?

pfSense has provided my current organization with remote access to the internal services and additional protection via its firewall.

What needs improvement?

I would like more add-ons/packages for extending pfSense which are approved by the main community.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using pfSense for the last five years, in three different companies in Denmark.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We never had any stability issues, even during high load usages.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We never had any scalability issues. It's easy to add additional services, or even a second or third pfSense product which works with the others.

How are customer service and technical support?

Unfortunately, I never used the technical support. However, the community forums provided me with answers to the implementation and configuration questions that I had.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I was using FortiGate and other firewall and VPN solutions. They were all ou0dated and too complicated to maintain. The change was made due to the ease of use of pfSense and the features that it provides.

How was the initial setup?

For an IT person, the setup was more or less straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

pfSense is free and open source software. Modification is easy and you can adapt it to your company's requirements.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

As I already had experience with pfSense and I knew how it would help me and my company, I didn't evaluate other options.

What other advice do I have?

The product is flexible, scalable, and has logic in using it. It is easy to integrate and implement into your IT environment.

Excellent technical support of a stable and easy to use solution
Pros and Cons
  • "Technical support is perfect, excellent."
  • "The integration should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution to help our customers with firewall integration.

What is most valuable?

I like the solution's stability and ease of use.

What needs improvement?

There is a need to increase the technology on the area of WAF, the web application firewall. I would like to be more knowledgeable about the firewall, so I may best use it to solve customer problems.

The integration should be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using pfSense for around six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is perfect, excellent.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is easy to install for one who properly understands the nitty gritty of the firewall and network.

It is my engineers who are responsible for the installation, not I, so I cannot comment on its duration, although I know that it does not take them long.

What about the implementation team?

We don't buy the PS from Sophos, because we have in-house training and in-house trained engineers who always handle the implementation.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Our customers must pay for an annual license.

What other advice do I have?

The solution can be deployed both on-cloud and on-premises.

When it comes to Sophos, we have around 18 to 20 customers making use of it.

I would recommend the solution to others.

I rate pfSense as an eight out of ten. It is good.

The internet is always available and has low balances
Pros and Cons
  • "It has a good web cache. I used to use a DHCP server and DNS server. For my company, I use pfSense as a load balancing application."
  • "Many people have problems setting up the web cache for the web system."

What is our primary use case?

I use pfSense for the security of my company.

How has it helped my organization?

With pfSense we have low balances for the internet and the internet is always available. When our service provider fails, it takes communication to another service. The employees always have access to the servers that they need. They always have an abundant flow or they always switch to the lead when the internet fails.

What is most valuable?

It has a good web cache. I used to use a DHCP server and DNS server. For my company, I use pfSense as a load balancing application.

The HA proxy is the main feature that it's used for.

What needs improvement?

Many people have problems setting up the web cache for the web system.

They should put an anti-spam in a web application firewall.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using pfSense since 2006.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is rock-solid.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I think scalability is good enough.

I do the maintenance for pfSense.

How are customer service and technical support?

There is a lot of information in the online forums.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used other solutions but I chose pfSense because it's easy to use and configure.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy.

Before I set up, I wrote down all the levels on a paper and I drew the plan I wanted to protect. After that, I deployed it pfSense. I filtered the access to the users and to the servers. Everyone has the access that they need.

The deployment took less than an hour.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's open-source. You can pay for support if you need.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate pfSense a nine out of ten.
