Performs well with Windows but lacks Mac support due to Mac's EULA

With respect to some of the cons, Proxmox VE performs well enough with Windows if you use KVM's virtio devices in lieu of emulated hardware. However, the freely available virtio drivers are not WHQL-certified, which produces annoying error messages when you attempt to load them.

With respect to the lack of Mac OS X support, a large part of this is due to Apple's terms of use for OS X. I can't really blame Proxmox or the KVM folks for not pursuing Mac OS X support since doing so would violate Mac OS X's EULA and could potentially get them or their customers sued.

Lastly, I can't say that I've ever had any stability issues with the Proxmox VE web interface, but using the graphical console can be a struggle. I don't think I've gotten it to work in anything except Mozilla Firefox.

The limitation to running on Mac platforms is quite a disadvantage to the many large companies using this kind of OS for their machines. Luckily there are many other alternative virtualization productss in the market that provide similar or better features.

The setup is straightforward and it has no stability issues
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup was really straightforward and easy."
  • "The virtualization can be better."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for Linux servers and contain our VM operating system servers.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see an improvement in the virtualization itself. We use the physical servers for easier migrations, but the virtualization can be better.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Proxmox VE for two to three years now on premise.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable.

How are customer service and technical support?

We haven't subscribed for technical support, so I can't tell you if they are good or not.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was really straightforward and easy.

What other advice do I have?

If I have to rate this solution, I will give it an eight out of ten. In the next version I would like to see differential packages. This version does not include that, so we have to use a third party or an opensource. Whenever we want to write a large, 500 gigabyte script to do differential packages for Proxmox VM, it is difficult to take a full package every day. So if that feature could be added in the future, it would be great.
