An analytics solution with data sharing and backup but on-premises set up is challenging
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the key advancements in Snowflake Analytics is data sharing."
  • "Implementing everything on-premise is challenging because it require proper support from advisors, DBAs, and others."

What is our primary use case?

We have chosen Snowflake to meet customer expectations. Some customers expect a partnership, while others primarily use migrations. They are using streaming data from an on-premises tool. The customer uses an existing system and partners with on-premises partners; we migrate them into the cloud system.

We migrated from Oracle and Zoom to Snowflake using the AWS Group.

How has it helped my organization?

One of the key advancements in Snowflake Analytics is data sharing. There are real-time data and survival protection data. If you want the same data, you have to migrate it. You have to move it over to the other place. So, you can now have a copy of the data. You can use it for UAT and development activities.

What is most valuable?

The backup features are a major aspect of our use of Snowflake for streaming processes. It plays a significant role in our migration process due to the need to export customer data. While the existing system operates primarily in batch mode, the migration process for exporting customer data can now be accomplished using a streaming process.

What needs improvement?

Implementing everything on-premise is challenging because it require proper support from advisors, DBAs, and others. However, with cloud implementation, there are fewer technical barriers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Snowflake Analytics for over a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable.

I rate the solution's stability as seven out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Our customer's daily transaction data amounts to 75 million records. Previously, we worked with the same customer using a red chip. They're using automatic node increase. We spend a lot of money for the storage activities.

The problem has been completely sorted out with auto-scaling. It automatically adjusts the storage capacity, which means the customer doesn't need to overspend, particularly on storage.

How are customer service and support?

We have proper support. It analyzes user greetings and reports and addresses the issue.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

How was the initial setup?

We are using the vendor or tenant. We can automatically connect to a source system. There are different connections available. Default connections are deferred. There are multiple source system connectors. We can use those connectors to pull data from various source systems, whether on-premise or in the cloud. Previously, the job was to use the existing built-in character to pull the data, do some budgeting, perform more strategic actions, and load it into the attack.

Initially, we need to set up applications and other necessary components; then, it becomes easier to migrate other things. On-premises setups are more rigid, making deviating from the initial plan challenging. Therefore, we cannot proceed with that approach. Instead, we can opt for the CACH model, which focuses on development and implementation, particularly in the latest tools and technologies.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

What other advice do I have?

Snowflake Analytics’s technical and domain aspects are crucial. Both are the most important for improving other products and adding customer value. In such cases, even a few customized elements can take us far. We have some use cases in the requirements we implemented in the process. So, we are using various technologies. The most important things we need to build are customer tools.

Many new features have been added to Snowflake, making it a completely cloud-based system. It's a modern data warehousing solution that incorporates many new technological aspects.

I recommend Snowflake. If you opt for the red chip, you'll have to spend more on storage. You can avoid these additional costs. It supports data injection and retrieval from various sources, ensuring rapid integration. It offers seamless transition support if users migrate to other platforms like Azure or AWS. There are no limitations on promoting various concepts.

Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

Data storage and management solution that requires no maintenance and offers easy integration with other systems
Pros and Cons
  • "The advanced features like time travel, zero copy cloning and scalability have been most useful. Snowflake requires zero maintenance for Data Warehousing on the cloud system."
  • "Moving data from legacy systems to Snowflake is not that easy. There are some cases where processors are not actually compatible with Snowflake."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution to move on-prem data to a cloud data warehouse where we have a requirement for more computation storage or when we need a plugin to work with specific technologies like ML, AI and Data Science.

What is most valuable?

The advanced features like time travel, zero copy cloning and scalability have been most useful. Snowflake requires zero maintenance for Data Warehousing on the cloud system. It is more secure compared to any other data platforms that we have used. The tri secret key is the feature that gives a lot of confidence to customers.

What needs improvement?

Moving data from legacy systems to Snowflake is not that easy. There are some cases where processors are not actually compatible with Snowflake. If Snowflake could offer compatible versions of other legacy system objects, that would be more convenient for anyone to move to Snowflake.

When comparing MySQL with Snowflake, MySQL is faster in executing the complex queries compared to Snowflake. This is the only factor where Snowflake lags behind competitors in the market.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for four and a half years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

The customer service and support for this solution is good. We had previously failed to retrieve data after the time travel period. We had to raise a ticket with technical support team and they helped us. They charged us for this but were able to help us retrieve it.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. The beauty of Snowflake is that you can select the configuration you need. For example, if you have a requirement of a one terabyte load with high availability and 10 users, Snowflake will set it up for you to match these requirements.

What was our ROI?

The ROI you receive using this solution depends on your use case and if you are starting from scratch or migrating from a legacy system. We have experienced a 40 to 50% improvement in ROI compared to legacy systems.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

When using Snowflake, you pay based on your usage. They calculate how much CPU has been used. If you use excess warehouse storage, you are charged one credit per hour. If you are in Asia, you are charged $3 per credit. If you have 10 users running parallel with the same excess, you will be charged $30.

Pricing for storage is calculated in the same way. You will pay upfront for the storage that you know you will need to consume. There is this option of prepaid consumption as well as post paid consumption. If you pay upfront, you will charged $20 per hour, per terabyte. If you paying after use, you will be charged $40 per terabyte.

What other advice do I have?

There is close to zero maintenance required for this solution.

You don't need to use traditional warehouses, vacuuming or indexing. A database administrator or system admin is not required.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

I am impressed with the product's data-sharing feature.

What needs improvement?

The tool should support EIM use cases. I guess the product is already working on it. I look forward to seeing inbuilt AI generative tools in the solution's future releases. The tool's price can be a little lower. The solution's on-premises support is also very limited. We have to rely on other support services to deploy it on-premises.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with the solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the product's stability a nine out of ten since it is stable and reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the tool's scalability a nine out of ten. My company has more than 1000 users for the tool.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's support responds fast.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

I would rate the solution's setup a nine out of ten. Being a SaaS product, the setup is straightforward. The solution's setup becomes complex only when you need to create a specific cloud platform which is virtual or public. If you have a CI/CD pipeline ready, then deployment can be automated. The tool's deployment doesn't take more than a day to complete.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution's price is high and I would rate it an eight out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate it an eight out of ten. The solution is very easy to use. The tool is a SaaS product. You can leverage your overall data analytics strategy with the solution. Very flexible and infinitely scalable
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution auto-scales and it provides concurrency."
  • "Integration into different Python and Jupyter notebooks needs to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We use the Snowflake platform for analytics and for data integration. We are partners with Snowflake. I'm the managing director.

What is most valuable?

The solution auto-scales and provides concurrency. You can have different virtual warehouses without them impacting each other. It's flexible and infinitely scalable because it's on the cloud.

What needs improvement?

For modeling of data as well as for AI and predictive analytics, they need to improve their integration into different Python and Jupyter notebooks. That is lacking but I understand they're working on it.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is easily scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is good, they'll escalate tickets if need be and they'll get engineers on board if that's what's required.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward, just click the button.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost depends on the size and on what you're using. I've had customers who spend a million dollars a year and customers that spend $20,000 a year. If you're not using it, it shuts off and you're not paying anything.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend starting small and growing into it. Don't overbuy. If you're going to get discounts and you're going to buy a block of credits for the year, make sure you need those blocks because you're not going to peak until the second or third year of implementation. It's easier than a traditional environment and allows for focus on the value that can be provided.

I rate this solution 10 out of 10.
