Will be my first choice for a DBMS again in the future.

What is most valuable?

A great database management system for all size companies. SQL server is more user friendly than competitors. Provides easy installation. If you need support or research for the product, it is easy to find help online. There are 3 editions available which will meet any companies needs. Latest version is cloud ready. Offers power and flexibility.

What needs improvement?

For each additional core feature you want to add to your DBMS edition, it is more money. This is not a FREE program as most other DBMS are. So basically, the more you want, the more you pay.

What other advice do I have?

A great DBMS for organizations of all sizes. Will be my first choice for a DBMS again in the future. The installation process was simple. You will pay for this SQL Server, but don't be afraid to try the free programs also.

Yes agree with the author that the system is user friendly and installation process is also simple and hassle free. SQL Server is a relational DBMS and supports various features like triggers and many more. Though the features comes with the price which cannot be affordable for some organizations.

Its lead and lag functions have helped us reduce a lot of code needed when comparing rows
Pros and Cons
  • "I love SQL Server's Common Table Expression. In addition to that, I like its lead and lag functions. That helped us reduce a lot of code when comparing rows in SQL Server."
  • "The way SQL Server pivots data could be improved. For example, I would like built-in comma-separated pivot and unpivot functions."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use SQL Server for reporting.

What is most valuable?

I love SQL Server's Common Table Expression. In addition to that, I like its lead and lag functions. That helped us reduce a lot of code when comparing rows in SQL Server.

What needs improvement?

The way SQL Server pivots data could be improved. For example, I would like built-in comma-separated pivot and unpivot functions.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with SQL Server for the past seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

SQL Server is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

SQL Server is scalable. I can't say if we'll increase usage in the future because I'm only working here as an analyst. It's a company decision. If necessary, then I can make a recommendation. I can go for that if the client wants, so it depends entirely on our client. If the client wants Oracle instead of Microsoft, I don't have an option.

How are customer service and support?

I never contacted Microsoft support about SQL Server, but I have called about Power BI one or two times. It was great support.

What other advice do I have?

I rate SQL Server eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Microsoft Azure

Stable, simple installation, but scalability could improve
Pros and Cons
  • "The initial setup was straightforward."

What is our primary use case?

The main use of this solution is to control and manage data storage information.

What needs improvement?

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for approximately two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

Affordable, easy to use and democratic in the enterprise; scalability could be improved
Pros and Cons
  • "Very easy to use, and it's very democratic in the enterprise."
  • "Scalability of the database could be improved if it could handle increased volumes of data."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for data mart and data warehousing. My company is a service company and we provide the professional services for deployment of BI solutions. We are customers of SQL Server and I'm head of data analytics.

What is most valuable?

This solution is very easy to use, and it's very democratic in the enterprise. A lot of customers use this type of database, and that's why the deployments are very often in the medium enterprise.

What needs improvement?

I think the scalability of the database could be improved if it could handle increased volumes of data. I'd also like to see improvement in performance when you are loading big amounts of data. Integration with other solutions would be a nice additional feature.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable to a point but not for very large enterprise.

How are customer service and technical support?

I don't have too much contact with the support at Microsoft, but as far as I know, it's good.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This is a very affordable solution, which is why it's used so widely in the market. I think one of the strongest points of SQL Server is the reasonable cost.

What other advice do I have?

The value of this solution depends on the business case that you're trying to accomplish and company size, and it depends on the volume of data you're looking for and the type of users that you're trying to serve. Basically, it depends on everything that goes with the functional requirements of the solution. If all that works then I would recommend this product.

I rate this solution a seven out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

Extremely mature, scalable, and stable
Pros and Cons
  • "The product has been on the market for over 25 or 30 years. It's an extremely mature solution."
  • "Technical support could be faster."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for data storage. We use it for its data warehouse, BI services, and AI.

What is most valuable?

If you compare the SQL Server with the block storage it's stable and it's working.

The product has been on the market for over 25 or 30 years. It's an extremely mature solution.

The solution is pretty scalable.

The initial setup is pretty straightforward, depending on your requirements.

What needs improvement?

The solution is very expensive.

Technical support could be faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for many years. It's been a while. It's likely been over ten years or so - a decade or more.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It does not crash or freeze. It's very reliable in terms of performance.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution scales well. If a company needs to expand it, it can do so with ease.

Three people are using the solution in our organization.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've used technical support in the past. However, it's not a very fast support system. For the new Office 365, it's better. This solution still needs to work on support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

For a specific task, we are using this solution. However, for some other tasks, we're using MongoDB, MariaDB, Oracle, or something else. It depends on the task and the solution and the requirements.

How was the initial setup?

The installation is not overly complex or difficult for the most part. The initial setup's level of straightforwardness, however, depends. If you only need an SQL Server, it's easy. If you need a cluster, it's more difficult. If you need a great cluster all over the world, it's more difficult.

What about the implementation team?

I handled the installation myself. I did not need the help of an integrator or consultant.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive. The pricing is different and not really standardized. If you're using it on Azure you pay on your workloads. If you have a separate dedicated instance, you pay for the course. It's different, according to the situation, however, in either case, it's expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We are customers and end-users.

We are using the 2014 and 2019 versions of the solution.

I'd recommend the solution to other organizations and users. However, if it will work for a company, or if it will work for them in an ideal manner depends on the requirements you have to fulfill as an organization. For example, race cars may be good cars, and great products, however, it's for a specific task. For other tasks, it may not be useful.

I general, I'm quite satisfied with the solution and it does what I need it to do. I'd rate the solution at an eight out of ten.

I'd recommend the solution to other users and organizations.

Popular, works well, and easy to use and deploy
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a typical database solution, and it is working well so far. It is easy to use, and it is also very common and popular, which makes it easy to find a support partner."
  • "It will be very useful to have high-level database monitoring. It should also have built-in business intelligence reporting."

What is most valuable?

It is a typical database solution, and it is working well so far. It is easy to use, and it is also very common and popular, which makes it easy to find a support partner.

What needs improvement?

It will be very useful to have high-level database monitoring. It should also have built-in business intelligence reporting.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for more than ten years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have around approximately 600 or 700 users of this solution. Currently, everybody is using this solution, and we don't have a plan to increase its usage.

How are customer service and technical support?

We don't have a direct connection with Microsoft support. We have a support partner who is in contact with the official Microsoft support.

How was the initial setup?

Its initial setup is easy.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend this solution. I would rate SQL Server an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
