Great alternative to proprietary operating systems; could be more user friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "Ubuntu is rather stable, simple to deploy, stable, and well supported by an open-source community."
  • "I think Ubuntu's performance is fine and so is its user interface. However, the latter is not as fancy as Microsoft Windows. It could be a bit fancier and easier to use."

What is our primary use case?

I use Ubuntu mostly for private purposes.

What needs improvement?

I think Ubuntu's performance is fine and so is its user interface. However, the latter is not as fancy as Microsoft Windows. It could be a bit fancier and easier to use.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Ubuntu only occasionally. I am not an experienced user.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Ubuntu is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Ubuntu is a scalable solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is absolutely straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are no costs associated with Ubuntu.

What other advice do I have?

Ubuntu is rather stable, simple to deploy, stable, and well supported by an open-source community. I would recommend it as a possible alternative to Windows for those looking to avoid the cost associated with that operating system. It is definitely a cost-effective alternative for private usage.

Reliable and reasonably-priced but the group polices and the GUI need to be improved
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of this solution is that Linux has cost-effective licenses."
  • "I would like to see the group policies and the GUI improved in the next release."

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of this solution is that Linux has cost-effective licenses.

What needs improvement?

If they had GUI features similar to that in Windows, it would be good.

The biggest problem we are facing with Ubuntu is that we cannot have group policies and Active Directories. The Windows Active Directory is a more granular level where you can deploy the group policies, which we don't see in Ubuntu.

I would like to see the group policies and the GUI improved in the next release.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Ubuntu Linux for eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Ubuntu is stable but when you running with 1,000 people or more, you have to go with a high-speed directory, and we don't have the same control thatwe have with Windows.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Ubuntu pricing is reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

We moved to Linux for financial obligations.

Ubuntu Linux is good as long as you have a good resource to manage it. For us, it's really good.

I would rate this product a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Open source with a fast OS; lacks sufficient documentation
Pros and Cons
  • "Open source with a fast OS."
  • "The installation of Ubuntu is somewhat complicated, requires better documentation."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for implementing anything that's open source, like a network monitoring tool or anything connected to network, security or vulnerability scanning. It can all be done with Linux.

What is most valuable?

The solution is open source and free with a fast OS.

What needs improvement?

The installation of Ubuntu is somewhat complicated. It requires searching online forums and installation takes time. If there was additional training and documentation available, better support for integration, that would be helpful. The UI could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for over 20 years.

How was the initial setup?

For business, the initial deployment is straightforward. If additional hard disk is required, then that will be difficult. Deployment took around 20 minutes and I believe we have around 10 users.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is open source, so no licensing costs.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend this solution if it's appropriate to your needs.

I rate this product a seven out of 10.

A good open-source solution but it could use a better UI
Pros and Cons
  • "I find the Linux community very valuable and the fact it is open source. So it's free and I use it without any problems."
  • "They aren't as user-friendly as Microsoft. The solution can use a better UI."

What is most valuable?

I find the Linux community very valuable and the fact it is open source. So it's free and I use it without any problems.

What needs improvement?

I'd like their updates to be better and some other official programs, as well as the user interface. They aren't as user-friendly as Microsoft. The solution can use a better UI.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I find the solution stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

For me, the solution is scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

I prefer to use the community, rather than technical support. I'm able to solve my problems using the community. It's easy to find answers to my questions.

What other advice do I have?

We use Covernity for cloud infrastructure, but for disk management, I use Unbuntu.

I would advise those thinking about using Ubuntu to be patient and don't switch to Windows.

I would rate the solution as 7 out of 10, because some platforms aren't as easy for users.
