Helps to utilize our resources by evaluating machine performance, but initial setup was complex

What is most valuable?

We use vROps a lot to do trouble shooting, especially in terms of performance. Also, it helps to utilize our resources, because we can help if the machine is oversized or if it's undersized.

How has it helped my organization?

We've gone from having no insight (into the type of resources which we're using) to a lot of insight. This provides a lot of different reports as to how to keep our business running efficiently.

What needs improvement?

Possibility getting the additional features onto physical boxes in the next release.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's stable. It doesn't crash.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We like the scalability of the product so far.

How are customer service and support?

We're using another professional services group for this.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We invested in this solution because them management team asked, "Why are you spending this much money on hardware when you're not using it?"

How was the initial setup?

I was involved in the initial setup. It was complex.

We have 11 different pieces of the VMR environment. We had to go through and upgrade them all getting everything done in the right order.

What other advice do I have?

The product is useful and it helps, especially going into a conversation with other IT staff and management.

Simple to deploy and helps us look at performance statistics for our environment
Pros and Cons
  • "It's valuable because it helps us look at our performance statistics for our environment."
  • "Where the product could improve would be the UI."

What is most valuable?

It's valuable because it helps us look at our performance statistics for our environment.

What needs improvement?

Where the product could improve would be the UI. They just changed the UI on it in this last version, but they could always expand on that, make it a little bit more in depth.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Very stable product, no downtime.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's very scalable and it will meet our needs going forward.

How are customer service and technical support?

The tech support is good. I haven't actually had to call tech support on the product as of yet.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were previously using SolarWinds and we switched to this because it's made by VMware and it works better with VMware than our SolarWinds solution did.

How was the initial setup?

It's simple to deploy, it's an appliance. You just go into your vCenter and deploy it and it's up and going pretty much. You go in and you put in your information for your vCenters, it goes out and collects the data and you're off and going.

What other advice do I have?

I rate it an eight out of 10, because there's always room for improvement, but overall I'm very happy with it.

Monitoring and performance analysis are among its strengths although more stable upgrades would be an improvement

What is most valuable?

The whole feature set, to be honest. Monitoring and, for me, the performance analysis.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps us to create better reports of historical analysis, of performance data, and do better capacity planning.

What needs improvement?

More stable upgrades, if that's a feature. Had some problems so far. Also, more reliable failure detection and more realistic out-of-the-box simplicity.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Quite good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Could be better, to be honest.

How are customer service and technical support?

It was okay. I'm not always able to get to the right person. It takes a while. Once I do reach the right person they are usually knowledgeable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I stumbled into VMware and never got out, to be honest. It's been cool technology for multiple years.

How was the initial setup?

It was straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

We are the partner so we implement.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Nutanix, Rubrik, Cohesity.

What other advice do I have?

When choosing a vendor the most important criteria are experience, maturity and, probably, documentation.

I would advise you get training because it's not so easy to start with and not get lost in vROps. Also, have everything ready the partner tells you to have and have straight expectations about what a solution does and does not do.

Includes a custom dashboard and capacity planner. There was a collection bug and some alert bugs.

What is most valuable?

  • Custom dashboard
  • Out-band (get alert in a text file)
  • Capacity planner

How has it helped my organization?

  • Capacity planning
  • Alerts dashboard
  • Get all the alerts from the external network and use ELK to show them in the production environment.

What needs improvement?

There was a collection bug and some alert bugs (didn’t show all the alerts and popped up fake alarms).

For how long have I used the solution?

I’ve used this for four years: three years with vCOps 5.x and one year with vROps 6.x.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have encountered stability issues. I redeployed the cluster twice.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not encountered any scalability issues.

How is customer service and technical support?

Technical support is 8/10.

How was the initial setup?

Installation is simple.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We checked three solutions and we chose vROps for our environment.

What other advice do I have?

Read the installation guide and tech blogs.

Makes it easy to track and locate issues with VMs
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are the alerts and dashboard, and that the product is simple to use, configure, and upgrade."
  • "There are some problems with integration, particularly with Slack, though these have been improved in the latest release."

What is our primary use case?

My main uses are monitoring performance reports and connecting to the VMware login site.

How has it helped my organization?

vROps has helped us monitor our VMs and track where problems are in the network.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the alerts and dashboard, and that the product is simple to use, configure, and upgrade.

What needs improvement?

There are some problems with integration, particularly with Slack, though these have been improved in the latest release.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

vROps is scalable - you can change the resources for it as much as you want.

How are customer service and support?

In general, the technical team are good - however, my latest experiences have not been as good because some of the team members lack experience and can't help with your problem.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy and takes about four hours.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented using an in-house team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We use a one-time license for vROps and have not had any additional costs.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution as eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Provides you with what you are trying to search for

What is most valuable?

The dashboard: Create your own dashboard and it will give you the right result that you want to see. It's very usable. It shows you many tricks that you can use. It provides you with what you are trying to search for.

How has it helped my organization?

Saves us lots of money.

Monitoring:

  • Regular stuff, such as if machines are up or down.
  • The CPU and how it is working.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I didn't scale it.

How is customer service and technical support?

I haven't used it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If you have enough money to go to an enterprise company, don't go to another company. Use VMware. Other companies make a similar solution, but not as great.

What other advice do I have?

I don't think there is another company that makes cables better than VMware.

The most important criteria for choosing a vendor:

  • Support
  • Reputation of the vendor.

Allows us to get an overview of our environment, the resources available, and if there are any outstanding issues.

What is most valuable?

Being able to get, at a glance:

  •  An overview of your environment
  • The resources that you have available
  • If there are any outstanding issues

How has it helped my organization?

It allows us to give our end users performance data. They may ask about network utilization, compute utilization, or storage utilization. We're able to get that information in a central location and give it to our end users when they request it.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see more multi-tenant support. I know that multi-tenant support was added recently, but expanding on that would be helpful for us.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall, it's pretty stable. I haven't had any stability issues with the product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I haven't really had to scale it, so I can't comment on that.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We weren’t using anything previously, but we started using it in our cloud environment. That's where we really identified a need for it. It also comes with the vCloud suite of applications. We deployed it because it comes with the vCloud suite.

How was the initial setup?

I was involved in the setup and it was really straightforward. It's like any other virtual appliance. You just deploy it and it just works.

What other advice do I have?

It's really a no-brainer. It really should be deployed in any fairly large VMware environment.
