Stability-wise, we haven't had too many issues. Before the next-generation firewalls, we used ASAs. In the 15-plus years that I've been using them I've only had one fail on me. Software-wise, we really haven't run into too many major bugs that we couldn't can get workarounds for by working with TAC. Overall the stability is excellent.

The stability is very good; there's no vagueness. Either it works or it doesn't, and it's also very easy to find out why.
We had MX when it was launched initially and it was not as stable as it is now. The stability of the solution has improved.
I would rate the stability of this solution three years ago a 3 and today's stability an eight, on a scale from one to 10, with one being the worst and 10 being the best.

It's very stable. We've seen very few issues that aren't human-related. If I were to rate the stability, it would have to be 10 out of 10 because we haven't seen any failures.
View full review »Its stability is excellent. In the last six months, I've probably deployed about 14 Cisco Secure Firewall devices, and I am yet to get a callback. I deploy them, and then the customer takes ownership of the device, and they're off to the races and ready to go. They've been stable, which is good. I don't like devices that break the week after I install them and make me look bad.

We've been using Firepower, the Threat Defense, and the Management Console for about six and a half years and I think we've had maybe two issues with it. And most of those were due to either our policy settings or something that we messed up. We've never had to return a box and we've never run into any major bugs that have actually hindered the actual security of the system.
It runs forever. I haven't had any problems with any Secure Firewall. It just runs. You don't have to worry about it crashing. All Cisco products run forever. They run themselves. You need to update them.

They have been very stable. I did not have any cases where a network was down due to firewalling. Fortunately, I did not have any hacker attacks, but that's being lucky. It's not something I would point out to firewalling or configuration. It's just that sometimes you're lucky and sometimes you're not.

The code has been reasonably good. It's getting better. The stability depends on the code and this last version of code we went through did give us a number of issues. It all depends on what the stability is in the code.
View full review »The ASAs are solid. They have been around a long time, so there is a lot of documentation out there. They are easy to manage and make it easy to look at logs.
They have been in the environment for 10 years. They are still running and doing their job.
The only time that we really touch them is if we need to do a rule or code upgrade. We check vulnerabilities a lot to make sure that nothing major has come out. If something has, then we go ahead and patch the firewalls. This is done by network groups, e.g., network engineers or analysts. We usually look at security. We are alerted to any new security advisories that come out from Cisco. For anything that is critical or high, we definitely will address it if we need to. Sometimes, we go three months or months without an upgrade. Other times, we could upgrade in a month. It just depends on what comes out.

With the main firewall we haven't had many issues. It's been pretty stable. I would rate it at 99.999 percent. Although I think it's very well known in the industry that there was a clock issue with the 5506 and the 5512 models. Their reliability has been far less. I wouldn't give those five-nine's. I would drop it down to 99 percent. Overall, we find the product quite stable.

View full review »Cisco products are quite resilient. We've had problems due to power failures and our UPSs not being maintained and their batteries being drained. With the intermittent on and off, the Cisco ASAs, surprisingly, didn't have any issue at all. The devices really stood on their own. We didn't even have any issue in terms of losing configs. I'm pretty satisfied with that.
I've had experience with some of the new Cisco devices and they're quite sensitive to power fluctuations. The power supply units can really get messed up. But the ASA 5516 is pretty resilient. We've deployed in a cluster, but even heating up, over-clocking, or freezing, has not happened.
We also have the Sophos as a bridge, although it's only a single device, it is not in a cluster or in availability mode, but we've had issues with it freezing. We have had to reboot it.
View full review »We have other things around it going down, but we really don't have an issue with our ASAs going down. They are excellent for what we have.

The product has significantly improved over the last two years. I am aware that the Cisco product team has made significant strides forward in addressing oversights that may have previously existed in the platform. I don't have that much in the way of improvements now. We are running the latest code, the 6.7 code, on all our environments. It addresses so many issues that previously existed in earlier versions of the code. From 6.6, the code has improved significantly and introduced many feature benefits.
The new code, 6.6 and higher, seems to be very stable. Now, you don't need to deploy the entire policy package every time you make a change. You can just deploy the segment of the configuration that has been changed. This has increased how quickly you can deploy the configuration, which is a good improvement. We seem to have less bugs and glitches in the newer code. I can't think of any real bugs or glitches that I have seen since we have been running 6.6. With 6.5 and earlier, there were some problems. Now, it seems to be very stable.

So far we haven't encountered any stability problems. You should have a lot of patches to apply to update the firmware. You can understand the firewall in less than a week.
We had some fraud introduced with our last box when Cisco produced an upgrade. The updated policy agreement was based on the wrong purchase date information.
The faster integration that is available in our region is pretty smooth for the Cisco firewall right now. I haven't found that much of a limitation to any service.
I used to have a lot of issues with firewall support. Now, I keep a good state of mind with Cisco. I can expect my capabilities going out of range eventually if we don't upgrade.
Cisco has its own cloud platform. I am able to see a single dashboard with all of my firewall activities and network performance under diagnostics, which is really helping us out.

The stability depends on the version. The latest versions are pretty good. Most of the time, we wait for one or two minor version updates before using the new major version because the major versions go through a lot of changes and are still a bit unstable. For example, if you take 6.3, it started to be pretty stable with 6.3.03 or 6.3.04.

Once it is deployed, not much staff is required as long as the intrusion rules are specifically configured to automatically update. That is the primary thing. Then, the continuous periodic updates from Cisco apply operating system patches just to make sure that critical vulnerabilities are patched and operating system optimization is applied routinely. Strategy-wise, I would patch quarterly unless there was a critical vulnerability that Cisco would discover, then apply a patch against it. At which point, we would then patch our appliance.

Our Cisco ASA deployment is an Active-Standby setup. That offers us resilience. We've never had a case where both of them have gone down. In fact, we have never even had the primary go down. We've mainly used that configuration when we're doing code upgrades or maintenance on the network so that we have full network connectivity. When we're working on the primary, we can switch over to the standby unit. That type of resiliency works well for our architecture.
View full review »There are a lot of things that can be improved. As a Cisco partner, I usually take the first hit if something doesn't work. In recent years, the solution has improved and is more stable. But it has to continue to improve in that direction.
A Firepower firewall is a very important point of exit and entry to a network. It's a critical piece of infrastructure. They should have high availability.
By comparison, I am also a huge fan of Stealthwatch (Cisco Secure Network Analytics) and I use it everywhere. I've been working with that solution for 15 years but it's not mission-critical. If it doesn't work, your boss is not calling you. If it doesn't work, it is not collecting telemetry and it doesn't do its job, but you are not stressed to fix it. With firewalls, it's a little different.

The stability is okay. It's robust enough to support the business we have. We haven't had any major issues with the product itself. Of course, we don't touch them frequently because it's a security deployment so it's not the type of thing where we make changes every day. Once we deploy them, and deploy the policies, we don't touch them frequently.
We have one issue at one of the sites, at times. There is a power outage at the site and the virtual machine itself crashes. We have to recover from the crash and reinstall the backup. It's something that is not related to the product itself. It's more that our infrastructure has a problem with power which led to a firewall problem, but the product itself is not the root cause.

The firewall is stable, however, every two, three, or four years, you have to change the hardware and therefore get an updated version of the firewall.
This is something which companies have been doing for the sake of a new product and launching a new device. Yet, the stability needs to be considered where you have to upgrade for every two, three, four years and change the product and go for the new updated version. What I mean is that there is stability, however, obviously, it's not long-term.

It's pretty stable. There are times where I'll get an email saying a process has stopped. But a few seconds later, they'll say it restarted it on its own. It's hardy enough that if it is having problems, it's bringing things back up. For the most part, it's been very reliable.
It's been really good. And even so, if I've had to reboot the actual appliance, I'll bring it back up and it's good to go.

The stability is pretty good. We went through several code revisions from being on the ASAs on 6.2, all the way through the new FirePOWERs, moving them to 6.4.
Unfortunately, we had the misfortune of using a particular set of code that later was identified as a problem and we had a bit of an upgrade issue. We were trying to get off of 6.3.0 on to 6.3.0.3. The whole system fell apart and I had to rebuild it. I had to break HA. We ended up having to RMA one of our two FMCs. I'm only now, a couple of months later, getting that resolved.
That said, I've had six or seven upgrades that went smoothly with no issues.

It has generally been okay in terms of stability. We haven't had it go down, but we do have some interruptions. I don't know if it is the ISP or the firewall. We have more frequent network disruptions, and other branches call in telling us that they are unable to use their services to do their job. Unfortunately, we can't really do anything about it. From a stability diagnosis, once I did the deployment it did not give me any issue for at least six to eight months. Once it went to a stable support, I did not see major problems. I don't think there were issues with stability.
However, the core upgrades frequently come in, so you need to be carefully devising that support management. From a stability perspective, if you are happy with your current stuff and you do not require past updates it would be very stable. If you're using an IPS, the only challenge would be past management. With Cisco having cloud integration and just firing one command and getting things done, it is still okay. It is a good stable product.

It is quite stable, it is able to detect. But the malware part should probably be upgraded. Performance-wise it is good and it has a long life.

In general the ASA has a great software stability reputation, and even though SourceFIRE for ASA is still young, the stability seems to be rather good. Of course you can’t avoid all issues, and you might have to reinstall the SourceFIRE software on the modules. If you're upgrading the ASA from pre code 8.3, you will need to redo the NAT and access rules of the ASA.

I haven't found the stability to be very good. The IPsec stability leaves a lot to be desired. They really need to work on the solution's stability capabilities.
In ASA, I built the IPsec between ASA and Fortigate due to the fact that most of the time I have to restart the timer to flow the data.

The Cisco ASAv is really stable, especially if you compare it to Check Point. Not long ago Check Point did release one virtual firewall, and the virtual firewall of Check Point is not stable.
The hardware version of the firewall is more stable than the virtual one. In terms of the data center, many companies have a virtual data center in a group environment. Many companies want to have a virtual firewall, but the one from Check Point, in comparison to Cisco, is not stable at the moment.

It is extremely stable I would say — at least after you deploy it. Typically, there won't be any instability in terms of the hardware as well as the software. It can be running for many years without any issues. It's a totally different story when compared to other brands because, out-of-the-box, they offer far more features and are actually leveraged on more resources which leads to more instability.

The stability of Cisco ASA is excellent compared to other products on the market. The performance is good. Compared to Fortinet on the watchband firewall, it is indispensable. Because of our customer experience as an integration company, our clients never report any performance problems. We have good performance from Cisco ASA.
