What do you think of Meraki MX Firewalls?

I was using the Meraki MX Firewall with a complete Meraki set up (WAPs over 43 acres) and, in general, it was a really lovely system to administer.  We had a problem with our MX100 and Meraki sent us a spare the next day so we'd have it on hand in case of issues - we did end up doing a swap to check if this solved the problem. The swap took less than an hour to have it up and running. Meraki products are great for swapping in and out and generally administering. I don't think you need to have much training to deal with most Meraki appliances - the user interface is very easy to sort. It's cloud based and I never had problems accessing it. I've taken some screenshots from the Meraki PDF on the MX100. This gives you an idea of the kind of thing you're going to see in...

What is most valuable?

The dashboard to keep track of 30 or so APs, switches, routers and logs, is invaluable. I liked the UX on this. Notifications (minus the techno-speak so it's obvious what the problem is) help us respond to access points down or rogue access... more»

How has it helped my organization?

It's cut down the amount of time administering an expansive WiFi network spread over 43 acres. We can easily monitor the up/down time so establishing KPIs and SLAs for the IT department becomes something attainable. Adding APs is a very... more»

What needs improvement?

The error logs need to be much more comprehensive.

What do you think of Cisco Ethernet Switches?

Competitive strength – Cisco and Juniper are a good fit in any data centre. Competitive weaknesses – Cisco takes a proprietary spin on standards, increasing fear of vendor lock-in and cost to replace. Juniper has to spend time explaining the technology. Cisco’s Nexus portfolio is broad and complex, requiring advanced skills to design, deploy and manage which increases costs. Juniper’s market share remains small compared to equally well-known competitors and calls into question the company’s ability to execute and attract channel and other partners. Current Perspective – Cisco switches remains a leader in the data centre due to both market presence and portfolio breadth. Cisco switches continues to win new customers based on both its portfolio and its...

What is most valuable?

We needed the product to enable a whitelist-only browsing mode for certain computers for a client. After that was implemented, I was able to configure a virtual appliance to prevent video streaming and certain social media sites. This in turn... more»

How has it helped my organization?

There was a positive effect on productivity because we could track and confront the users that were frequently using social media or streaming video during the work day. They weren’t wasting as much time after OpenDNS was implemented. It gave... more»

What needs improvement?

I would like to have the ability to prevent certain sites/data from showing on the reports. I have had this feature request open for a couple of years. It would be useful to have for filtering out unuseful data.

What do you think of Cisco Ethernet Switches?

Valuable Features Versatility and streamlined IOS Availability of expertise on the market (resources) • Improvements to My Organization Streamlined IOS helped to develop templates for Ethernet Switches without worrying of compatibility of commands in regards to hardware platforms. Modularity of Industrial switches (IE3000) provides flexibility in solutions yet based on one platform. Vast array of Industrial models (IE2000, IE3000, IE4000, IE5000). • Room for Improvement Acceptance of open source trends (there is slight move already - just keep going) • Use of Solution 10 years overall for all switching/routing products. Industrial switches for last 5 years. • Deployment Issues No • Stability Issues No • Scalability Issues Well, need more pro-active...

What do you think of Cisco ASA?

Cisco ASA has better application granularity, a more flexible means of policy creation, and easier to use controls and more powerful reports than its predecessors. We tested the ASA-5525-X in January 2013 and found a much improved user interface and lots of content-aware features.

What do you think of Cisco Identity Services Engine?

Valuable Features Cisco ISE now competes with any other product in the space because of its centralized and unified highly secure access control with ISE. ISE grew out of ACS and in the process has grown up. • Room for Improvement The learning curve is steep and the initial setup is complex. • Stability Issues We've had no issues with stability. • Scalability Issues We've had no issues with scalability. • Customer Service and Technical Support Customer Service: Customer service is good. Technical Support: Technical support is very good. • Previous Solutions Yes. I am a consultant, so I have used many competing products over the years. • Initial Setup The initial setup is complex, but not if you fully vet the solution and leverage the...

What is most valuable?

Outstanding NGFW capabilities, Site to site VPNs and High Availability. Also the integration of FirePOWER services are a huge step forwards for an already great platform.

What do you think of Cisco Catalyst?

Valuable Features The most valuable features, to me, are CDP, VTP, ACLs, and routing. • Improvements to My Organization These products help me dissect my network based on the users within a particular location. They've also provided me the capability to separate network traffic as necessary. • Room for Improvement As a user, I would like to see the Layer 2 Switches to have NBAR capabilities as well. It would be nice if the new ISRs have firewall capabilities as well. • Use of Solution I've been using these products since 2008. I have a Cisco ISR 2821 and 2911, Cisco Catalyst 4500, 2960 and 3750 Series Switches. • Stability Issues No stability issues were experienced. • Scalability Issues It would be nice to see these products have built-in wireless access...

What is most valuable?

If you compare it with other products, other firewall products in the market, at this moment, it doesn't have that many features, no impressive feature in it, in fact. The one thing I like about the product is the logging features, the way it logs, the way it forwards the logs in Syslog. It generates the particular Syslog. Compared to other products, that is the... more»

What needs improvement?

It doesn't have a proper GUI to do troubleshooting, so most people have to rely on the command line. Its a sort of legacy product nowadays. The firewalls which are the next generation have loads of features added to them, and they are all in one box. It should have packets, deep level inspections and controls, like the features which other IPS solutions have. It... more»
