Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The tools are built-in. You just plug and play, drag and drop, once you understand how to use the tools, it is easy.""I like that I can merge data from different sources into one place.""The feature that I have found most valuable for Alteryx is its geo-referencing feature, it is very good. I use it a lot, especially for supply chain.""Shortens the time required to start analyzing data and looking for insights, minimizing the tasks that do not add value to the business and maximizing the analysis phase.""Its initial setup is easy.""I think the most valuable feature for Alteryx in a health facility is that it permits cleaning, organizing, and merging of databases such as Excel and Access.""It allows for manipulation and automation, which has greatly reduced the amount of time required per project.""The three data signs and data engineering are great features."

More Alteryx Pros →

"When compared with Power BI, Tableau is much easier.""Easy for beginners to use""I work for clients. That is my business model. Business people really like to see Tableau. They love Tableau because it is very user-friendly. The platform provides an easy to use interface, which is what most people like about it.""It's very easy to set everything up.""Since Tableau is on the cloud, we haven't faced any challenges around scalability.""The maps and colors and interface are all fantastic.""I like the visualization component.""Tableau's most valuable feature is its ability to connect with various data sources and display real-time data on three different dashboards."

Cons
"What they're struggling with is it's not as mature as Tableau in the user management area. It was tougher to manage the server part of it right away, especially since the user base has grown.""Lacks an open source edition which would be helpful.""A feature which allows the user to be able to click on an output (in a file browser) and see the creation of the module would be fantastic.""It would be great to create the final users' visualization within Alteryx.""I think sometimes the solution doesn't load properly or takes so much time for the workflows. Though the workflow runs and completes the file in Excel, if you use the same formula, it's a bit slow. Also, the image processing is not so good because I tried to do some image processing and they were like, sometimes they put two to eight. In the document, it was two, but the OCR predicted it as eight.""The price of the solution could improve by being lower.""It is a little bit pricey.""I'd like it to be easier to work with PDF."

More Alteryx Cons →

"Tableau is difficult to scale because of the cost, which makes it difficult to scale.""The user experience for less savvy or non-technical people (from my experience).""Many things have to be improved in Tableau. Right now, we make the calculation, and then we get that information. It would be better if business users could do that. I would ask the people at Tableau to provide that option to business users to get that information in one click. It would be better if they automated some calculations. There should be more automation in Tableau. However, there are many things in automation mode, but it is very limited at the moment. We need automation for people who do not know much about Tableau. It would also be better if there were good community support like in Alteryx.""With performance tuning, it generates a pretty complex query when it is not required.""An area needing improvement involves the complexity of the product should you need to alter a lot of parameters. If you have technical servers, much interface, different providers and more serious processes, that will be time consuming.""It's not an aesthetic platform at the moment.""It is not so great when it comes to data exchange/integration, data mining, etc.""Reports should be downloadable as PDF files."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "A designer and scheduler for $13K/year in total is pretty much earning you the money back in time and in other resources."
  • "Very transparent."
  • "The seat is too expensive."
  • "It can be a bit pricey, especially after the first year."
  • "The pricing is $5000 per year per production license."

  • "There are some implementation services and internal effort costs at the beginning but there is nothing else."
  • "The price for Alteryx Designer is reasonable but the price for Alteryx Server for universal collaborations is too expensive."
  • More Alteryx Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "For big business, Tableau could be expensive as having a lot of Tableau server users (entering with a browser to reports) could be a bit expensive."
  • "Best advice on pricing is to anticipate the desire for more licenses once the results of this product are acknowledged in other parts of your company."
  • "Paying for users you never setup or buying expensive desktop licenses for users who can solve their users with web editing on the server are the two biggest expenses."
  • "Buy 50 at a time. Project your use base every three months, and project your requirements forward."
  • "Tableau can be costly (but this can be indefinable, such as user experience vs. cheaper etc.)"
  • "I wish there was more of a subscription model with the pricing when it comes to Tableau, so you can get all the latest version upgrades/features if you pay monthly/annually."

After a recent presentation, several attendees asked me about the applications of Visual Insights and Tableau. Many companies are investing in both tools and are trying to figure out the right tool for specific applications Tableau has found its sweet-spot as an agile discovery tool that analysts use to create and share insights. It is also the tool of choice for rapid prototyping of dashboards. Tableau is very flexible with its data import. Tableau's data blending capability is very intuitive. This capability is useful when you have data spread across several different sources that has not gone through ETL processes. This is a problem analysts deal with routinely. They are unable to wait for the data warehouse team to develop ETL processes to provide the physical models they need to build an analysis. The Tableau interface is Excel-like and has a low barrier to entry for analysts that are used to working in Excel. Building a dashboard by mashing up visualizations in a Tableau worksheet is extremely simple. Users are able to build good presentation-quality dashboards in a very short amount time. Tableau's annotations capabilities and its time and geographical intelligence are key differentiators. Tableau has overcome limitations in data sharing with the introduction of a Data Server in Tableau 7.0. The Data server allows Data sources and extracts to be shared securely and opens up interesting new possibilities. If your application can take advantage of the above… Read more →
