Pros
It is easy to implement but requires good planning. It is reliable when it comes to monitoring. The benefit is easy installation. Thus, the model approach of the product and out-of-the-box probes, which deliver direct value. You can integrate clouds, hybrid infrastructure, and on-premise infrastructure into one product. It is the foundation for our monitoring solution.Having all of our information within one tool set; our alerts, our monitors, and the things that our operations team needs to function. It reduced cycles for a lot of quick out-of-the-box functionality. It also allowed us to get away from being stuck in SNMP, VTP V2, based off of agent deployment.Easy admin functionality. You can quickly do all the admin functionality without reducing cycles.

SQL Tuning Advisor, ADDM, Top Activity, ASM Space Manager, Incident NotificationsI have found the singular GUI feature very helpful. Fewer DBA resources can be allocated with Toad licenses.Oracle Enterprise Manager has eased the responsibilities among our DBAs. We can now assign individual tasks to separate DBAs.With ASH Analytics, ADDM, Real-Time SQL Monitoring, SQL Tuning Advisor, we can measure SLAs, detect performance hotspots, perform deep diagnostics into specific tiers, tune applications, and remediate. It can also help with capacity planning, sizing, and maximizing overall performance in a large scale environment. This solution allows us to quickly drill down when there are issues. We use it extensively for performance tuning testing, monitoring, and configuration. The 13cR2 updates to the OEM family, strongly integrate Cloud (off-site, hybrid and on-premise) services providing a seamless way to see all of your resources regardless of where they are deployed.

Cons
Reporting capability can be improved especially when it comes to availability. We want to see more investment in the UI and the dashboard. How we can get more native information from CA's solutions. They need to continue to advance the filter capabilities, and provide more input fields.I would like to see auditability. We've built our own audit functionality to ensure that every CI has the desired model configuration applied to it. And we run that on a daily basis. If that became part of the product, I think it might be a little bit less intensive in terms of resource, because we're doing it with scripts. It is a little complex to use versus other softwares. The biggest feature that I've been hoping they would enhance on is inventory management: things like adding/removing nodes. It needs a little bit more functionality in the Admin Console.

Patching. It's extremely difficult to determine what requires patching and the process to patch each component is slightly different. They should improve the hover text context. This would provide assistance whenever a task is attempted by a DBA.The product is pretty comprehensive, but quite resource hungry. This might be due to the majority of the application seemingly being written in Java.Better mobile access would be useful.Reporting and statistical charting is largely still left up the end-user to develop custom solutions.I would say mostly backup and recovery, through the Enterprise Manager. Or any corruptions, to be able to fix them through Enterprise Manager.I feel more dashboards can be added, especially those useful to higher levels of IT management. It needs to support the Database versions lower than 10.2.

Pricing and Cost Advice
Reasonable setup cost and licensing prices. The license cost depends on the number of probes and robots. The product-price ratio is better than other brands such as Fortinet or SonicWall.

There are a few bugs with the software which require opening SRs with Oracle Support which contribute to the day-to-day cost. Perhaps 8 hours per month is spent dealing with support, just as a rough guess. The basic functions are free. You only pay license fees for advanced features.Evaluate your requirements carefully. Elaborate DR and HA setup of OEM can become expensive.Be careful to only enable the packs for which you have a license as this is an issue we see time and again.Based upon 3 days of implementation by a single person, plus licensing costs would be approximately $60,000, including the virtualized hosts. As with all Oracle products, care should be taken when using any features to ensure that they do not activate licensed features that have not been paid for.It is part of Real Application Testing, so no new investment is necessary for clients who already are already using RAT.

Overview

CA UIM provides a single, unified platform that allows you to monitor your entire IT environment, both inside and outside the data center. It offers the ease-of-use and simplicity associated with point IT monitoring tools, featuring a unique powerful architecture with a lightweight footprint. At the same time, it delivers enterprise scalability and multi-tenancy that power some of the most complex infrastructures.

As an IT operations professional, your job is more critical than ever because cloud operations are now a fact of life. For example, you must address the concerns of corporate compliance auditors one minute, and the next minute, deal with end users who signed up for cloud services without consulting you first. So, what are you to do?

Not to worry! Oracle provides a single solution for managing both situations. Oracle Enterprise Manager provides a “single pane of glass” that allows you to manage on-premises and cloud-based IT using the same familiar interface you know and use on-premises every day.
