We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The primary purpose of this software is to create a virtual SAN between local storage on Hyper-V hosts. I find this feature most valuable since it accomplishes this quite well.""StarWind vSAN has a lot of great features and is a perfect solution for mirroring internal disks and flash between servers.""PowerShell library is pretty good feature as I created with APC PowerChute a script to put volumes on maintenance mode then turning off the StarWind nodes together with the VM and Hosts when UPS reaches 15 percent, this way after a blackout or electrical problems when turning servers on again, there is no issues for syncing or data loss due to energy interrupts.""I've been really impressed with it so far. I think it's pretty great, actually. It does exactly what we need it to do, and it does it well, so I would recommend it. Plus, the support has been very good.""I like StarWind's high availability. The failover is almost immediate, so the end users have no idea the guest VM moved at all. We can failover all guest VMs onto a single hypervisor, place it into maintenance mode, install updates, and reboot a hypervisor all during the daytime and remotely, with confidence the process will be successful.""The software is easy to setup and manage, and the support is excellent.""The best part is the easy way it operates with a very clear GUI without any unnecessary items.""It also provides a high degree of mobility, as the virtual SAN can be moved relatively painlessly between on-site devices and the cloud."

"When we compare it to normal hardware servers, I'd say it is quite easy to configure and deploy.""The most valuable feature is the low management overhead, and the lower skill set required to manage it.""The most valuable features are the deduplication and the compression features.""The solution's best feature is its simplicity. It's so simple to deploy it. You've got the VMware, and it's own appliance. It is really helpful. The system is online within half a day and saves so much time.""The solution's hardware is great.""The most valuable feature is that you can assign a volume to an off-shore workload on the fly.""What I like the most is that it is easy to implement, easy deployment and that it's easy to manage."

More Dell XC Appliance [EOL] Pros →

"I like that you can add other types of services.""It is stable and scalable.""The size of the hardware is what we need because it is very good for small configurations.""The consolidation of the management in one control point is the most valuable. The whole infrastructure management is consolidated in just one console point. The documentation is also pretty good.""The most useful feature is the solution's automation in terms of how we are able to spin up a certain workload in real-time when we are doing R&D.""Both the scalability and stability of this solution are excellent."

Cons
"While we had no problems setting the system up, and service technicians from StarWind could assist us very well, they could provide some form of in-depth documentation.""Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers.""There is no Italian-language version of the software available.""I think the setup could be streamlined a bit.""A web management interface would be good, especially for those coming from other solutions that have one.""I'd love to see native export of metrics (via Prometheus or something of that nature) to allow us to get more metrics available on our existing dashboard software.""I would like an automated installation/configuration despite the fact that their service is very collaborative, a customer should be able to deploy the solution by themselves.""A great feature would be a wizard and to include a new disk in the SAN. At the moment, including a new disk requires several steps - some that must be done at the OS level and others in each node."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"The solution's storage size could be improved.""In the next release, I would like to see support for Docker and containers.""There should be more provisioning capabilities within the solution.""We are not always advised of new features or updates, so we must research to stay up to date.""Currently, there is no support for the servers that are not in the cluster.""Dell needs to do a lot of work to simplify the maintenance and life-cycle upgrades for the product.""The cost of using the public cloud deployment is astronomical."

More Dell XC Appliance [EOL] Cons →

"The licensing policy needs to be improved. They have a licensing policy based on the number of CPU sockets. Nowadays what has happened is that the license they are trying to move is based on the number of CPU cores. With the advancement in technology there are now more cores in a single CPU. It's been very challenging in terms of managing the license around everything. Today we have a processor with 24 and 32 cores on the same physical CPU.""It should be more user-friendly, in my opinion.""The cloud deployment could be improved.""It is not user-friendly, and it is very difficult to operate. You have to have a deep understanding of the technical details of the infrastructure to implement it. When you compare it with VMware, it is totally different because the graphical user interface is not that easy to understand. It is not intuitive. To use it, you have to read a lot of documentation and even understand what is going on behind the solution. It is not for someone who has a little bit of knowledge. Currently, it is too complex. I need something that is easy to implement. It should have a basic configuration as well as a complex configuration.""This product is not so stable. Maybe it is just not mature enough in its development.""The main issue is the initial investment. It is an expensive product, and it should be cheaper. It should also be easier to use and manage. The professional service for this solution is quite complex and expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "The price point is very fair for a product in this category but can vary depending on the components selected within the family of products."
  • "We received a good price from Dell."
  • "The pricing is dependent on the technology and is in direct relation to the manufacturer and the components."
  • "The pricing is good."
  • "The pricing for Dell EMC solutions is quite expensive and not really made for small or medium-sized businesses."
