Quotes From Members Comparing Kaminario K2 vs Tintri VMstore

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
Inline compressionScale out is a differentiator for them, especially in the enterprise market. It's key for a lot of customers. The increased performance is many times above our previous array performance in all metrics. Integration with vSphere features is also a definite plus. The speed and, for us in particular in what we're doing, the data de-duplication.Logic/software managementBuilt-in snapshot support gives us SAN-side functionality most other platforms would have had us license separately.Data reduction and snapshot abilities: Smaller footprint in the datacenter (lower cost for power, cooling, etc.).It provides a full feature set without separate licensing (deduplication, compression, snapshot, asynchronous replication, stable performance, etc.).

The Deduplication feature in VDI environments. If Tintri says we can host 3000 VMs in our storage, I know we can host 3000 VMs there. Believe the results.A very good support team that is available 24/7. They have real technical staff with strong knowledge.Web GUI for maintenance and resource monitoring purposes is easy to use.Upgrades are super easy and can be done during business hours without interruptions in production. Its speed has been absolutely fantastic. Its VM-aware features have been excellent to use and integrate with XenServer as well.Tintri VMstore is rock solid. We have not had a single issue with stability. It is also very low maintenance allowing us to concentrate on project work.Support from our vendor and Tintri are brilliant. They have always answered all of our questions promptly.

Cons
Improved scale and budget planning with flexibility of the solution for budget needs and efficiency for growth with the great optimization ratio due to the nature of our use.I would love to see capacity on its DRAM. I know it's not cost effective for them to do it, but I think that it could be a big differentiator and was a big differentiator from the beginning. The interface look and feel could be improved. The front panel of the drive shelf doesn't always seat firmly.A single pane of glass to monitor/manage multiple arrays would be helpful.I would like them to improve the look of the product’s external casing and shelves. The management graphical interface needs more improvement. Some of the nice to haves for us, in terms of today, would be VVols but again, it’s not a critical feature.

In sync and automated mirror between two Tintris is missing.I would love more insight into each virtual machine statistic. The Tintri Analytics site is excellent for long-term trending, but more data would be great. The product could be improved by adding iSCSI support. We have had to rethink how we implement some of our services due to this.I think with the world soon becoming only SSD, possibly NVMe, and 3D Xpoint. It would make sense for Tintri to drop the hybrid array down the line.Active/active cluster between two Tintris on Hyper-V cluster.Speed of our VDI machines. We have a very high log in and log out ratio and machines are being refreshed instantly so we have a constant boot storm on our storage.Tintri need to be able to innovate faster but maintain the quality of their features.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The Kaminario setup is simple and there are no hidden licensing fees so this area is a relief. The licensing is all-inclusive.The "extra" costs associated with features and options that are available off the shelf with Kaminario, make their value proposition extremely competitive.Licensing is very straightforward. The cost was considerably lower than other products we looked at.I would like them to come down in price. It is as expensive as EMC, Hitachi, and other major vendors. All features are provided in the licensing. The cost of Kaminario was less than the cost of a hybrid array.

The area it needs to improve is the pricing. It could be better.Make sure that you have all licenses in one go. Options afterwards can cost extra. An "all-in-one" license model would be better at this price range.Ensure the storage system "natively" supports the protocols that you wish to use (i.e., CIFS) without the need for the overhead of internal "conversion VMs" that run the protocols.Tintri is reasonably priced for the solution you get. Advanced features do require extra to use.The licensing model is relatively simple. For things like replication, however, the licensing needs to be looked at.Prices are not cheap, but it runs.I think it is a very good solution. You get a good bang for buck.
