We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"I like the firewall features, Snort, and the Intrusion Prevention System (IPS).""The solution offers very easy configurations.""The integration of network and workload micro-segmentation helps a lot to provide unified segmentation policies across east-west and north-south traffic. One concrete example is with Cisco ACI for the data center. Not only are we doing what is called a service graph on the ACI to make sure that we can filter traffic east-west between two endpoints in the same network, but when we go north-south or east-west, we can then leverage what we have on the network with SGTs on Cisco ISE. Once you build your matrix, it is very easy to filter in and out on east-west or north-south traffic.""Being able to determine our active users vs inactive users has led us to increased productivity through visibility. Also, if an issue was happening with our throughput, then we wouldn't know without research. Now, notifications are more proactively happening.""We get the Security Intelligence Feeds refreshed every hour from Talos, which from my understanding is that they're the largest intelligence Security Intelligence Group outside of the government.""I have access to the web version of Cisco Talos to see the reputation of IP addresses. I find this very helpful. It provides important information for my company to obtain the reputation of IP addresses. The information in Talos is quite complete.""The most important feature is the intensive way you can troubleshoot Cisco Firepower Firewalls. You can go to the bit level to see why traffic is not handled in the correct way, and the majority of the time it's a networking issue and not a firewall issue. You can solve any problem without Cisco TAC help, because you can go very deeply under the hood to find out how traffic is flowing and whether it is not flowing as expected. That is something I have never seen with other brands.""Firepower NGFW has improved my organization in several ways. Before, we were trying to stamp out security threats and issues, it was a one-off type of way to attack it. I spent a lot of manpower trying to track down the individual issues or flare-ups that we would see. With Cisco's Firepower Management, we're able to have that push up to basically one monitor and one UI and be able to track that and stop threats immediately. It also gives us a little more granularity on what those threats might be."

"The most valuable features in OPNsense are reporting and visibility.""The most valuable features are reporting, the Sensei plugin, and firewall capabilities.""The solution is good for a basic firewall for a small business or for home use.""The system in general is quite flexible.""OPNsense is easy to scale when running on the hardware.""The initial implementation process is simple.""I have found the solution has some great features overall, such as guest access capabilities, dashboards, and ease of use. There is plenty of documentation and support and it has the plugins that I needed.""The interface and the dashboard are the most valuable features of this solution."

"The solution can scale well.""This is a capable appliance and the standard features work well for us."

Cons
"On the VPN side, Firepower could be better. It needs more monitoring on VPNs. Right now, it's not that good. You can set up a VPN in Firepower, but you can't monitor it.""The product line does not address the SMB market as it is supposed to do. Cisco already has an on-premises sandbox solution.""The performance should be improved.""The initial setup could be simplified, as it can be complex for new users.""Report generation is an area that should be improved.""We're getting support but there's a big delay until we get a response from their technical team. They're in the USA and we're in Africa, so that's the difficulty. When they're in the office, they respond.""The price and SD-WAN capabilities are the areas that need improvement.""When you make any changes, irrespective of whether they are big or small, Firepower takes too much time. It is very time-consuming. Even for small changes, you have to wait for 60 seconds or maybe more, which is not good. Similarly, when you have many IPS rules and policies, it slows down, and there is an impact on its performance."

More Cisco Firepower NGFW Firewall Cons »

"The solution would not be suitable for anything large-scale.""There are issues with stability and reliability.""The interface needs to be simplified. It is not user-friendly.""I would like to see better SD-WAN performance.""There should be more technical documentation.""The logging could improve in OPNsense.""While they do have paid options that actually gives better features, for most of the clients, if they tend to take a paid option will instead opt for Fortinet.""The interface isn't so friendly user. But we have some technicians here who are quite confident with this tool. OPNSense could maybe add sets of rules so it's simpler to manage different groups with particular needs."

More OPNsense Cons »

"Sometimes it reboots when you least expect it, and that's the main issue.""Although manageable, the user interface is a little bit slow and could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"I know that licensing for some of the advanced solutions, like Intrusion Prevention and Secure Malware Analytics, are nominal costs.""When we purchased the firewall, we had to take the security license for IPS, malware protection, and VPN. If we are using high availability, we have to take a license for that. We also have to pay for hardware support and technical support. Its licensing is on a yearly basis.""The price is comparable.""This product requires licenses for advanced features including Snort, IPS, and malware detection.""When we are fighting against other competitors for customers, whether it is a small or big business, we feel very comfortable with the price that Firepower has today.""This product is expensive.""Cisco pricing is premium. However, they gave us a 50 to 60 percent discount.""Cisco, as we all know, is expensive, but for the money you are paying, you know that you are also getting top-notch documentation as well as support if needed."

"It is not an expensive product. Basically, I deployed it because it was the fastest solution to satisfy our needs in open source.""OPNsense is a well known open-source tool.""As an appliance, it's in the medium price range.""OPNsense is open source software so at this time it is free for us to use.""The solution is not expensive.""OPNsense is an open-source solution and it is free to use."
