Eases provision and application lifecycle management

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use cases include:

  • deployment of the Java EE applications on a scalable cloud environment
  • leveraging the built-in DevOps capability for managing the application lifecycle
  • quick provisioning of environment (non-production), on an as-needed basis.

How has it helped my organization?

  • Operational overhead and expenses have been reduced due to easy provisioning and decommissioning of dev/test environments.
  • Application lifecycle management has become easier with built-in DevOps capabilities.

What is most valuable?

  • Easy provisioning and scalability
  • Seamless integration capabilities
  • High-availability and ease of management

What needs improvement?

Since most of our applications are Oracle ADF based on WebCenter, supporting a complete lift and shift of such complex Java EE would help us become completely cloud-based for our web channels.

For how long have I used the solution?

One to three years.

Domain backup and recovery, applying and undoing patches, are easy and fast
Pros and Cons
  • "Backing up and recovery for my domain is very easy and fast. In addition, applying patches and undoing applied patches is effective and easy to do."
  • "The product is satisfactory but we need more training on managing the machine itself. For example, how do we add more storage, how do we extend a specific portion? I would like to see videos illustrating some of the technical tasks that we often need to do."

What is our primary use case?

We are running different applications with different development technology on Oracle Java Cloud Service.

As for technologies, we are running both Oracle Forms applications and Oracle ADF applications on Oracle JCS. These applications are human resources management systems, accounting, portfolio management systems, and document management systems. All these systems are developed in-house and all of them are integrated with Oracle Documents Cloud Service in a way that the documents are linked to the database records and the user can access the document related to the transaction.

How has it helped my organization?

We are working in a "hot" region. Most Middle East countries have conflicts and wars. We are able to move from one country to another one, so this solution gives us availability. We can access our database and application any time, anywhere at no additional cost.

What is most valuable?

Backing up and recovery for my domain are very easy and fast. In addition, applying patches and undoing applied patches is effective and easy to do.

What needs improvement?

The product is satisfactory but we need more training on managing the machine itself. For example, how do we add more storage, how do we extend a specific portion? I would like to see videos illustrating some of the technical tasks that we often need to do.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three to five years.

What other advice do I have?

The product is very good, fine-tuned, and stable. Support is available 24/7 and is really fast and effective. However, it is somewhat expensive, so I rate it at eight out of 10.

We're able to run applications that were initially deployed to IBM WebSphere.

Valuable Features:

The most valuable features of Oracle Java Cloud Service is the ability to develop applications on-premise, using well know IDEs (Oracle JDeveloper in our case) with the possibility to quickly deploy it to the cloud-based WebLogic Server. Also, the possibility to run applications that were initially deployed to IBM WebSphere albeit with some re-configuration and adjustments.

Fast, rapid and agile development and deployment of an ADF application (within Proof-of-Concept project) involves four developers in a distributed team (across two different time-zones) and through this they are able to cooperate quickly, without the usual problems of dev/test environment deployments.

Improvements to My Organization:

We now have the ability to very quickly develop/modify and deploy applications (e.g. Proof of Concept, demos etc.) with a geographically distributed team using agile methodologies whilst avoiding environment specific problems such as long-time delays to restore an environment at a specific point in time, at the same time.

Room for Improvement:

It needs to have the ability to create a service with the same name as another one when the initial creation failed as sometimes it's necessary to have a service with exact name. As far as I know, this problem is indicated as a "known issue" by Oracle, but this point is really needed sometimes.

Other Advice:

You need to look into the Oracle Coherence optional offer as the description is not absolutely clear in some of the articles for beginners.

Enables me to securely manage security and access the server from any location
Pros and Cons
  • "The automated features of auto-purging in 12c helps clear disk space on a routine basis."
  • "One key feature is getting to choose the Virtual Machine configurations while setting up the server, which is an automated process."
  • "The ability to manage security and access the server from any location with complete security using SSH is perfect for performing crucial tasks, even while travelling."
  • "The auto-backup, incremental backup and restoration features can be invaluable for management."

What is our primary use case?

My primary use case for OJCS includes Java EE applications and ADF web sites on Weblogic Server running on cloud. They have added advantage of high availability and cloud-level security. Further implementations of middleware integration can be accomplished using Oracle SOA CS or Integration Cloud Service.

How has it helped my organization?

The concerns of server failure and unplanned downtime have been notably reduced. The automated features of auto-purging in 12c helps clear disk space on a routine basis.

    What is most valuable?

    • Getting to choose the Virtual Machine configurations while setting up the server, which is an automated process.
    • The ability to manage security and access the server from any location with complete security using SSH is perfect for performing crucial tasks, even while travelling.
    • OJCS can seamlessly connect to other cloud offerings like Oracle Database Cloud Service, Oracle Developer Cloud Service, Oracle Storage Cloud Service, etc.
    • The auto-backup, incremental backup and restoration features can be invaluable for management.

    What needs improvement?

Most of the features provided are well designed and implemented. I'd like to learn more about WebLogic Server for solutions to help identify and resolve stuck threads.

For how long have I used the solution?

    One to three years.

Fast, stable and durable; you can't break it

    What is most valuable?

I think it's pretty fast and, I feel, competent because the company is pretty big and things seem to be secure.

How has it helped my organization?

Reduces man-hours and speeds up business operations.

    What needs improvement?

I feel like everything's running perfectly, so I don't have any improvements at the moment. But in terms of future features I would like it to be more helpful on the social media and marketing side.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's stable. Durable. Can't break it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    It has scaled well.

How is customer service and technical support?

Usually I'll just go to the contact list, either in email form or in a chat room. I think they are pretty efficient, speedy, and helpful if we have any incidents that happen on the server. It's pretty speedy customer service.

What other advice do I have?

Make sure you network more. Get to know the techniques of the technology of Oracle and just expand it throughout your business and enlighten your employees.
