We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"If your infrastructure is already on Amazon, it simply makes the most sense to use a tool officially provided by them as an additional service, rather than having to rely on a third-party solution.""Even if it does break down, it will automatically recover itself and resumes from where it stopped.""It's pretty useful when we need to migrate something big from a different type of database that AWS Data Migration Services supports.""The most valuable feature of AWS Database Migration Service is it catches all the history changes, such as inset, observe, and delete. It tracks everything.""As the solution is on the cloud, we don't have to worry about the maintenance of software.""What I like about AWS Database Migration Service is that it's a good product that allows you to migrate terabytes of data. My team was able to migrate almost 16TB of data using AWS Database Migration Service. The solution works fine for my use case.""The product's initial setup phase was very easy.""AWS Database Migration Service is good for smaller workloads and provides compatibility."

"The mass ingestion functionality and the elasticity of the solution are great.""I like the fact that you can find almost any product connection that you need and the list is always expanding.""Their new licensing is very flexible. With Informatica Cloud, you have plenty of items under the same umbrella, such as services, offerings, data quality, and data masking. You have also got master data management and API management. What I really like about them is that you don't need to go to Informatica and say that you need a data integration module. You would say that you need iPaaS or Informatica Cloud. They'll then try to understand your needs and give you IPUs, which are the processing units. If I purchased a hundred IPUs from Informatica as a customer, I can use 70 IPUs for data integration. I would also need data quality, so I can use 10 IPUs for data quality. I can use the remaining 20 IPUs for API management. Down the line, if I see that my initial data integration needs for the development phase are met, then out of the 70 IPUs assigned for data integration, I can use 30 IPUs for data masking. I can shuffle these numbers in any way within the Informatica Cloud umbrella for the tenure for which I have subscribed to these IPUs. I can use all services the way I want. This flexibility is what I really love about Informatica. It also has got good connectors.""It has become an easy way to exchange information through any cloud application.""Data synchronization tasks.""It is a scalable solution. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.""The Mapping Configuration and PowerCenter wizards are valuable. We use them to run our business logic.""The support is very good."

"Integration with all systems is easy with Oracle Data Integrator, and it is easy to use. I have not used any other product, but with Oracle Data Integrator, we can easily connect to an ERP system, an SAP system, or a cloud application.""It's scalable.""I like that Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) has a straightforward setup and offers good technical support.""The CAEM is very useful in its modularity and portability.""Besides loading data, we do most of our transformations in ODI.""I do not have to maintain a separate ETL instance. I can change the SQL when something is not performing correctly.""The most valuable features of ODI are the ease of development, you can have a template, and you can onboard transfer very quickly. There's a lot of knowledge modules available that we can use. If you want to connect, for example, a Sibyl, SQL, Oracle, or different products, we don't have to develop them from scratch. They are available, but if it's not, we can go into the marketplace and see if there's a connector there. Having the connector available reduces the amount of hard work needed. We only have to put the inputs and outputs. In some of the products, we use there is already integration available for ODI, which is helpful.""One of the standout features of ODI is its ability to prepare everything on a vertical level and create reusable components, which adds to its value."

More Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) Pros →

Cons
"This solution can offer more tweaks where the latency can be brought down to fifteen seconds.""The names of the services need improvement since AWS doesn't indicate what the function of the product is presently. You need to read a lot to find the service that you want in the product.""As a solution, the better thing is if more platforms come with direct compatibility, like connecting to different data sources. The basic problem I faced the most was while transferring and reading data from Excel. So, one time, I found that all the components I had declared in my scripts were able to take it. And after some patching happens, it is not able to support that. Again, we need to update the version of Excel. So, it's not like a plug-in type place where you have done the solution and are confident that it will work. So, this is an area of improvement.""The server has limits on how many can connect to the database.""What needs improvement in AWS Database Migration Service is that it lacks a log file validation feature. If the solution could provide more details about a particular transaction, that would be helpful. The stability of AWS Database Migration Service for online CDC records also needs to be improved.""Database Migration Service could be more integrated. I think that it makes sense to add integration to these functions. For example, AWS Glue has a feature called Orchestrator to create data flows, and that's more straightforward.""Migrating from here and pushing the data from on-premise to AWS cloud is a big challenge and a few more services from AWS would be helpful. For example, we are currently using ILDB internet tools which move data from on-premise to the AWS cloud. A few more services would be really helpful for me to move the master data.""Whatever solution worked today can not be reused in the next migration."

More AWS Database Migration Service Cons →

"I have received feedback from certain teams and there is a steep learning curve to use this solution.""The integration process is not easy.""While my company operates on the cloud, we have seen that Informatica Cloud Data Integration has some performance issues causing it to lag.""Performance also needs to be significantly improved, especially when connecting to SFDC for read and write operations.""The current features are a bit complicated, and we need to write big scripts and test.""I would also like to have profiling functionalities and quality transformations in the cloud.""The vendor should have more training resources: online classes, free tutorial videos, etc.""The biggest challenge I see is the IDE's for the cloud and automization are different."

More Informatica Cloud Data Integration Cons →

"It has been very good. Just recently, I've faced an issue, but I solved it somehow. While integrating with a file, I faced an issue where I wanted output files, and I had used the text field limited quotations, but at the end of the file, there was a line breakage for the last column. So, we just removed the text field because it was not working correctly for us.""In our company, we haven't tried consuming services from IoT in our company yet, and I would like to know if the solution will support IoT services in the next release.""The initial setup is complex, especially if you also have to install a console.""It would be really good if Oracle considered enabling the tool to integrate with some other platforms that are deprecated simply for commercial reasons""The interface of ODI could be improved. For example, navigating and finding functions can be difficult. For example, you have to know which step you need to go to look at where your job status is. The logical step is a bit complex compared to other tools. It's much easier to get a graphical view, but with ODI, it's graphical, plus you have to know all the other pieces that fit around it. You have to think about the logical and physical aspects.""The performance of the user interface is in need of improvement.""ODI could improve the ease of use. There is a steep learning curve to use the solution.""The stability of the software could be improved. Sometimes, the software just crashes. "

    Overview

AWS Database Migration Service, also known as AWS DMS, is a cloud service that facilitates the migration of relational databases, NoSQL databases, data warehouses, and other types of data stores. The product can be used to migrate users' data into the AWS Cloud or between combinations of on-premises and cloud setups. The solution allows migration between a wide variety of sources and target endpoints; the only requirement is that one of the endpoints has to be an AWS service. AWS DMS cannot be used to migrate from an on-premises database to another on-premises database.

AWS Database Migration Service allows users to perform one-time migrations, as well as replications of ongoing changes to keep sources and targets in sync. Organizations can utilize the AWS Schema Conversion Tool to translate their database schema to a new platform and then use AWS DMS to migrate the data. The product offers cost efficiency as a part of the AWS Cloud, as well as speed to market, flexibility, and security.

The main use cases of AWS Database Migration Service include:

    • Migrating from legacy or on-premises databases to managed cloud services through a simplified migration process.

    • Reliable replication of backup files to minimize downtime and data loss.

    • Improvement of integration through building of data lakes and performing real-time processing on change data from users' data stores.

    AWS Database Migration Service Components

AWS Database Migration Service consists of various components which function together to achieve users’ data migration. A migration on AWS DMS is structured in three levels: a replication instance, source and target endpoints, and a replication task. The components include the following actions:

    • Replication instance: AWS Database Migration Service provides users with a variety of replication instances, allowing them to select the optimal configuration for their use case. Depending on the instance class an organization selects, their replication instance provides a different amount of data storage.

    • Endpoint: AWS DMS uses an endpoint to access users' source or target data stores. The connection information is different and depends on the specific data store, but it usually consists of the following information: endpoint type, engine type, server name, port, encryption, and credentials. This information can easily be managed through the AWS DMS console.

    • Replication tasks: AWS Database Migration Service replication tasks can be used to move a set of data from the source endpoint to the target endpoint. The creation of a replication task is the last required step before starting a migration. Each replication task requires the following settings to be set: replication instance, source endpoint, target endpoint, and migration type options.

    • Ongoing replication or change data capture (CDC): AWS DMS also has the capacity to capture ongoing changes to the source that is stored while users migrate their data to a target.

    • Schema and code migration: The product requires assistance from tools such as MySQL Workbench, pgAdmin III, and Oracle SQL Developer to perform schema or code conversion, as it cannot do it on its own.

    AWS Database Migration Service Benefits

AWS Database Migration Service offers its users a wide range of benefits. Among them are the following:

    • The solution ensures minimal downtime, as it continuously replicates the changes to the user’s source database during migration.

    • AWS DMS provides users with flexibility, as it supports many commonly used databases, including commercial and open-source ones.

    • The product is user friendly, as it offers an easy set of tasks in the AWS Management Console.

    • Users of Aurora, Redshift, DocumentDB, and DynamoDB can benefit from the free use of AWS DMS.

    • AWS Database Migration Service is very reliable because it is a self-healing service that automatically restarts in cases of interruptions.

    • The product supports both homogenous migrations and heterogenous migrations.

    • AWS DMS accelerates business growth, as it scales businesses at an affordable price.
