We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"HyperScale X is really user-friendly and has a lot of features. It's also cheaper, faster, and more stable than its competitors.""It integrates redundant storage and preserves jams in a storage area, providing up to 70% compression rate.""Commvault has a unique administration platform with more features than its competitors.""It's very user-friendly. It supports a wide range of workloads. It's quite easy to use, it's very powerful and it's scalable.""The recovery features are useful. It is easy to recover data. If something happens, we can easily recover data. We have faced ransomware issues twice, and we recovered because of Commvault.""The solution is easy to use and the duplication is quite good.""Whoever has an Endpoint license can store unlimited data on the cloud.""I like the product because of its simplicity and the fact that it provides one single interface for managing everything, including storage, data, and policies."

"Its flexibility is valuable. It is a very flexible solution. There are always more ways than one to do something. It is a software solution, which means you can buy your own hardware and expand it whenever you want. You are not boxed in or locked into something you've bought and outgrown. You can always expand it.""The main feature of this product is a flexible architecture and functionality that allows you to solve problems of any complexity and scale. Most importantly, it is not just a product that simply makes a backup, but it restores and saves a large number of services in critical situations. By the way, it works fine with different types of clouds, supports S3.""The backup is very good. In other backup systems, you need a lot of storage to gain the same backup policy.""Our performance is better.""The platform has valuable stability.""We cannot live without it, since it gives us the confidence to move forward.""I've had no problems with the stability of this solution.""With the new features that we have added, it has made a difference as far as faster recovery and speed."

More IBM Spectrum Protect Pros →

"The most valuable feature is that it is basically a replica of our SAND data. We archive the SAND data for recovery, if there is an issue on the fence.""It is essential. We can't do without it.""Its ability to cover a large spectrum of products and operating systems is invaluable. We evaluated other products but always found certain limitations like some products had only intel-based virtualization, while others had power servers.""It provides us with the versatility to back up everything we require which eliminates the need for a secondary backup solution.""The solution is stable.""I have found it to be the simplest solution to the market. It gives us a complete end to end solution. We are using this solution, Veritas Appliance and another one for access archiving. It is convenient to have all the support from one vendor.""I like the virtual server backup.""It's a good product, it does what we want it to do."

Cons
"The back of virtual machines needs improvement. I know they're working on it. They're always doing new things but I think they still have a little bit more to do.""The solution requires improvement with its connection and bandwidth.""The setup is not that straightforward or easy. Even the documentation is not generic or public like other products. You have to be a partner or you have to have a specific account and download it from the vendor themselves.""My customers are not satisfied with the tool because there is a little trouble with the throughput of Metallic.""Support for this product needs to be improved because I have seen a couple of cases where it is taking more than the required time to solve issues.""With so many features, sometimes you cannot find what you are looking for in the interface and you have to dig into books online to find out how to solve an issue.""They need to integrate configuration screens or videos (free training courses, webinars, demos) so that engineers with little experience can fully exploit the features that are offered or managed within the license that was acquired, and thus have better quality and completely satisfactory experience.""Getting my guys the right access has a learning curve. Sometimes, it is, "Oh, okay. I think I got it for you." Then, they say, "Oh, nope. I logged in but I can't see this." Then, it is, "Okay, hold on. Give me a second. Let me change that. Okay, it's this one." That learning curve has probably taken a little bit longer than some simpler things. So, Metallic has some granularity, and as a systems administrator, I appreciate that. At the same time, I also realize that I have to learn it."

More Commvault Cloud Cons →

"We would like to see bare-metal restorers.""The administration interface should implement more functionalities that exist only in the command line and needs improvement in how some reports are created.""The version that we had when I first started made it look really bad. We are talking about commands that should have run in two seconds, but instead took four to eight hours. Other components were sluggish.""There is room for improvement in IBM Spectrum Protect, especially regarding its support for virtual environment backups.""They do not have a unified GUI, they only work on CLI and operations center, which is really complicated for the installation and configuration.""In terms of features, they've got it all covered. The features they have are quite good. The only downside to it is that it is for an enterprise or big organization. In my opinion, it is not for a small business.""It has a lot of areas for improvement. Its reporting for job completion or incompletion can be improved. It should also provide a granular recovery, ease of operation, data life cycle management, and media management. It should support a backup in such a format that in case of a disaster, one can start the virtual machine out of the backup itself. Its reliability can also be better. It is also expensive, and their support is also poor.""It should have the ability to break down the data that's being backed up. It should have better reporting."

More IBM Spectrum Protect Cons →

"It is a very expensive solution. They should have a different scheme for selling it. They should also make it easy for us to switch from Solaris to Linux. We are having some trouble in migrating our actual catalog from Solaris to Linux.""It would be better if it had a cloud integration feature. I would like to use a single product for the cloud instances and the on-premise instances. The price could also be better.""Netbackup can backup MySQL via Oracle policy, to be honest, this is not completely native support and this method has a few limitations. In fact, you can buy from Veritas (or Zmanda) clients for MySQL or PostgerSQL from Zmanda to backup MySQL or PostgreSQL on Linux.""The licensing costs could be more affordable.""It's a little bit complex to manage.""DDBoost.""Technical support is somewhat slow and is in need of improvement.""The flip side about NetBackup is that it is not policy-based."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "If budget allows using the per socket license and not the agent based with per GB counter for Dedup is the way to go."
  • "There is now a subscription based licence option that, depending on your environment, could offer a more efficient method to licence the solution if you are OPEX cost driven rather than CAPEX."
  • "New licensing is easy and affordable."
  • "Licensing could be better explained. Sometimes, it's unclear what features are available in different licensing models."
  • "Compared to other competitors and vendors the pricing is fair."
  • "In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average forty percent initially, and then twenty to twenty-five percent annually."
  • "The price could perhaps be lower as well."
  • "Our cost is around $20,000 per month. The previous year, it was around $30,000 per month. It now costs less because Commvault changed the licensing type for providers."

  • "Technical support is pretty good. It is doing fine, but you pay for it."
  • "Licensing can be either complicated or simple depending on what type of licensing you wish to use and what works best for your environment."
  • "At scale, the consumption license (per TB) is very expensive."
  • "Use capacity licensing. It's easier and cheaper."
  • "We worked our licensing into a capacity model, which is nice. Now, everything is much simpler to manage from a licensing perspective."
  • "We chose IBM Spectrum Protect, because they actually have something called MSP pricing, which means managed services provider pricing. The pricing was attractive, and it seems to be a platform that IBM is totally investing on in terms of new functions and new capabilities."
  • "Spectrum Protect is not expensive, and it is simple to use."
  • "It is very scalable, but the downside is that it costs money."
  • More IBM Spectrum Protect Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Licensing was very expensive and did not scale well if needed to move between license models."
  • "Smaller virtualized environments will want to stick to a traditional licensing model if possible. It will likely be cheaper, but it is a pain to manage all the individual licenses for each client."
  • "So far I can only say that the license structure could be looked at to be aligned as either capacity-based or traditional."
  • "If you have a complex environment with dozens of different servers and apps, I recommend you look for TB licensing."
  • "The software and license are very expensive."
  • "Pricing is pretty costly as compared to the other products but worth investing for the long term and high ROI."
  • "Acceptable if you need to implement it for larger environments, e.g. over 1000 clients. For smaller setups it might be too expensive."
  • "The licensing model is cost-prohibitive as you scale out."

    Reviews from Real Users

Mahdi B., Solution Architect and IT Consultant at Merdasco - Rayan Merdas Data Processing, says, “Veritas integrates well with the cloud, all databases, all operating systems, all hardware, and all software. Veritas also has solid malware and ransomware protection features. From time to time, we face a new kind of attack, and Veritas has always proven to be the best protection solution for some of my customers. Our customers who have faced ransomware attacks were able to recover their data in less than one day without any stress. Veritas is ransomware resilient and because of its implementation, it is not dependent on the operating system to work. Most of the functions of the Veritas software are isolated from the operating system and it's not dependent on the operating systems involved. This is very important. When some of our operating systems are infected by a virus, Veritas still works perfectly and protects our data. This feature is very well implemented in Veritas NetBackup.”

A PeerSpot user who is a General Manager at a comms service provider relates, “Veritas enterprise has many agents who perform the backup, whether it is a consistent backup or recorded backup. The solution has everything from the snapshot to the multiple database agents.”

Mir-Ali, Infrastructure Manager - Oracle SCM at a financial services firm, shares, “It covers all kinds of different architectures. Plus, it's very user-friendly and it is very reliable. Reliability is the most important thing because once the backup is done, if it is successful, then we're sure that it was successful and we will be able to restore it.”
