Provides a single console, internal workflow automation, and fully automated deployment; no need to access an OS or app platform

What is our primary use case?

We're using it mainly to back up operating systems like Windows, Linux, and databases such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL.

Pros and Cons

  • "Among the best features are the BMR (Bare Metal Recovery), Live Sync, and IntelliSnap, which is used for snapshots of hypervisor storage. It's predefined so you only need to enable it and it works. I haven't seen anything like this in other backup tools like Veritas NetBackup or Dell EMC or TSM. We will use snapshotting for all our machines."
  • "They should move the CommServe outside of Windows machines and the database should be distributed among servers. It's still a single point of failure."

What other advice do I have?

Commvault is more administrator-friendly than other backup tools. We are using Commvault for cloud support, but that part is at the PoC stage. But it's the same as the on-prem solution. Whether the library is on physical disk or in the cloud, it looks the same in Commvault, so that's not an issue in terms of configuration or use. There are even more cloud vendors than I had heard of and it looks like Commvault supports all of them. We don't use it, but there is an archive function in Commvault which allows you to move data from primary storage to another type which is much cheaper. Version 11…

Supports differential backup, as well as granular file restore from specific points in backup history

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider, and some of my clients are using this solution. The primary use case is to back up system applications such as SQL databases and Microsoft Exchange. It is also for backing up the user's files, which are kept on the server. This solution will back up your server, and it will work on both Windows and Linux. My experience is with an on-premises deployment model.

Pros and Cons

  • "This solution is not complex and you do not have to be too technical to use it."
  • "The price of this solution is very high."

What other advice do I have?

Depending on the size of the data being backed up, it can take a couple of hours to complete. This is a solution that keeps evolving with technology. They know the trend of cyber attacks, so Veritas try as much as possible to build up their backup solution to combat whatever attack is in trend. They recently sent me a document that shows that their data protection can mitigate against ransomware. This is good for enterprise clients because it shows that they are thinking of their customers. A lot of organizations today are afraid of ransomware, and Veritas is ensuring that they are…

Easy to use, helpful notifications, and you have control over retry attempts when jobs fail

What is our primary use case?

We use Veeam for backing up our entire infrastructure, which is running on a hyper-converged solution. We back up our Windows servers to disk and to tape.

Pros and Cons

  • "The most valuable feature is the ease of use."
  • "If you are doing an AIX backup then you have to use the CLI because it doesn't appear on the console, the way that Windows and Linux jobs do."

What other advice do I have?

There are many advantages to using this product. That said, there is still a problem with AIX integration. The native AIX backup client is a really poorly designed system and is unusable. I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

A multi-platform solution that supports a variety of media and has no limitations

What is our primary use case?

I was using this solution at my previous job, about six months ago. The company that I am with now is planning to purchase it, although, at this time, we do not have any of these products. I have experience with the on-premises deployment model, and it was our backup solution.

Pros and Cons

  • "This is a multi-platform backup solution where you can take a backup from AIX, Windows, or Linux servers and restore from CD, disk, or tape."
  • "The user experience is very bad and the interface needs to be improved."

What other advice do I have?

This is a really strong application that I find really useful and reliable for backup, but it needs to be more user-friendly. I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

An all-in-one package that consolidated and simplified our backup solution

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is as a backup solution. We also use Cohesity for cloud enabling and seconday storage. With respect to backup, our environment is based on virtual and physical machines, and Cohesity fits great. The virtual machines are based on VMware 6.5/Nutanix solution with vCenter. Cohesity can handle up to 2,000 virtual machines with a classic schdule of one backup per day. CBT works great so it is an incremental forever solution. For our physical system, we use agents for AIX, Windows from 2003 to 2016, SUSE, and RHEL. The application backups handle SAP, SAP HANA, Oracle, and SQL… more »

Pros and Cons

  • "After linking a cloud subscription, like Azure for example (AWS and Google are also supported), you can "spin" a VM onto the cloud from any backup snapshot."
  • "The GUI is in need of improvement."

What other advice do I have?

Cohesity can replicate backups to a secondary cluster (also virtual edition).
