Amazon S3 Glacier Other Advice

Kiran Rajanna - PeerSpot reviewer

If you plan to store your documents for over three years, I recommend using Amazon Glacier S3 to the fullest extent possible. This is because the longer you store your data in the tool, the more you pay. By moving most of your objects to Glacier, you can save money. Additionally, you can use Reserved Capacity to save even more money. Retrieving data from Amazon S3 Glacier is relatively easy. It is easier than retrieving data from the tool. So, I think people should use the product as much as possible.

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

I rate Amazon S3 Glacier a ten out of ten.

Two bits of advice: make sure you get a specialist with things like security, such as network security. The security is indirect with AWS. You could get an expert in Python using Lambda, but it doesn't make you a network security person. Once you've got a million pounds worth of business data in Amazon, you could potentially share that with the planet if you don't know how to set up the security. Get the relevant technical specialist for things like security.

The second bit of advice is to completely understand the pricing structure.

We get two versions of the solutions. The amount of data we can upload on the free version is limited. The Pro version has more bandwidth. I recommend using the Pro version for more flexibility and speed. Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Users should choose Amazon S3 Glacier depending on their requirements. If someone wants to keep their data for ten years, they should use Amazon S3 Glacier. On the other hand, if someone wants to keep their data for one year, there is no need to use the solution.

Overall, I rate Amazon S3 Glacier a nine out of ten.

We are also using API Gateway and NAT Gateway. We are using the infrastructure and security features of AWS. If an organization has the budget, they can use the product. If they have a big requirement, huge loads, and a need for high availability, they must choose cheaper products. Overall, I rate the product a nine out of ten.

My company does not use the product for data archiving since we have other solutions for it.

The low-cost storage solution impacted our budget for data backup, but I can't comment much since our organization is not yet leveraging functionalities. I know that there will be a huge impact on our budget for the solution if we start leveraging the tool for archival and backup.

The features I found most beneficial for secure data stored in the tool range from security availability to the ease of use it provides. I think pretty much everything has been valuable when it comes to the tool, especially if you are able to leverage its features.

The recovery options provided by the product are not used since my company does not use the tool for backup.

The product's scalability has impacted our company's ability to manage large datasets since I see that we are able to scale up, considering the data that increases every single day in our organization. In terms of performance, my company was able to scale up Amazon S3 Glacier's use. I don't think my company is looking out for more scalability features than what is offered by Amazon S3 Glacier.

I recommend the product to others who plan to use it, considering that it is easy to use. The positive factors of the product will fall into place once you start using it. Users can also figure out how the product stands out compared to the other services in the market.

The integration of Amazon S3 Glacier into our company's existing workflows improved data management processes in a pretty seamless manner. If you look at some other third-party tools, you know that no product is purely a cloud solution, and there are a lot of hybrid solutions. Many businesses use third-party middleware or software, like Boomi platform, which has come into play by providing integration between cloud and on-premises solutions.

The value derived by my company from the use of Amazon S3 Glacier is related to how we are able to seamlessly provide an interface for our company's customers to push data, documents, and other stuff, and it helps my company gather information that is required in a very easy manner. There are very few solutions that help our company deal with the aforementioned procedure. The time to market is also pretty small, but the tool has been really helpful in such areas.

I rate the tool a ten out of ten.

It's a good product. We must remember that it's already been copied two or three times by AWS. We don't need to set up a copy ourselves. It is a big advantage. We can try to separate our data between different regions. So, if one region goes down, we still have our data in another. It’s a good practice.

We can't improve the product without increasing the cost. People can use two or three S3s to make it more secure. However, forcing all users into the same setup is not in AWS's best interest. There’s an advantage in going to the cloud. If an organization needs big security and has well-trained people, they can implement it. However, a very small company that doesn’t need that security won't pay for it.

Overall, I rate the product a ten out of ten.

I like Amazon very much. We are a billion-dollar company, and we use Amazon heavily. We will use the cycle policies to ensure all the files that are not accessed frequently are put somewhere. We are planning a big change in our organization to reboot our data.

We will have more data segmentation by using different buckets. When this transition is finished, we will work more toward the different layers of storage. Overall, I rate the product a nine out of ten.

I haven't extensively used the retrieval options. Generally, we haven't encountered any significant issues with the service, although occasional network latency might occur due to various factors such as server positioning. However, the retrieval process has been fairly reliable.

Rating the tool on a scale from one to ten is quite challenging. It's akin to comparing different brands of ovens, such as Murphy Richards, Samsung, or LG. All of them are excellent in performing their basic function. However, the differences lie in their operation, user interface, and user-friendliness. Similarly, AWS stands out as a leader in virtual services, but comparing it directly to others is not straightforward.

I rate it a nine out of ten. The tool's integration into existing workflows is simple. Whether or not to recommend it depends on the requirements of the individual or organization. It's essential to assess what kind of data they intend to use it for and what their data needs are. Appropriate recommendations can be made based on these factors and other qualifying queries.

I advise others to set up cross-region verification for the S3 bucket. It is crucial to check the amount of data they upload. Companies should carefully evaluate their AWS usage based on specific goals and requirements. Different pricing plans and services may be more suitable for different use cases. They should implement bucket policies that require confirmation or additional steps before deleting files, which can prevent accidental data deletions. It saves a lot of data.

I rate Amazon S3 Glacier a ten out of ten.

The solution helped us to meet our compliance needs. We use Amazon S3 Glacier as a platform as a Service (PaaS). If you have a virtual server, you can create a copy of the solution on an entire virtual machine. In case it goes down or someone messes with the configurations, you could just easily activate the copy.

Amazon S3 Glacier is expensive as far as virtual machines and data storage are concerned. That's why I minimized the data storage as much as possible. Two to three people are required for the solution's deployment and maintenance. They need to have a proper understanding of each different environment where the solution needs to be deployed.

Amazon S3 Glacier works like OneDrive, and it's straightforward to upload or download from it. I would recommend the solution to other users. Hosting static websites is straightforward, but you need a specialist to guide you to deploy dynamic websites on Amazon S3 Glacier.

The solution is easy to manage, and I rate it an eight out of ten for its ease of management.

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

I am using the latest version of Amazon S3 Glacier. Amazon S3 Glacier is a cloud-based solution. Around eight people are needed for the solution’s deployment and maintenance.

I would recommend Amazon S3 Glacier to other users. Before using the solution, users should know its cost because it is too expensive based on the storage size.

Since Amazon S3 Glacier is a cloud-based solution, you don't have to worry about installing and maintaining a server on-premises.

You have to be aware of Glacier's performance. There is a delay in Glacier, and you will not have a response because you can archive it. If you bring files from the library, from the archive, the response time is between four to seven hours. When you fetch something from the archive, it will take time. If you want to make it faster, we keep the content on S3, and it will come instantly.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give Amazon S3 Glacier a nine.
