What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate Commvault eight out of 10 for stability.

How was the initial setup?

Setting up Commvault is complex and it involves many steps. After you configure the storage, you need to set your client's policies and add a proxy server if necessary.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I prefer selling Commvault to enterprises. It's appropriate for a company that has a headquarters plus four or five offices. It isn't ideal for a small business. The price is okay if you have the budget of a large enterprise. Aside from the license, the only additional cost is cloud fees if you are using cloud infrastructure.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Commvault Backup and Recovery 10 out of 10. I would recommend Commvault if a company has huge backup needs and a sufficient budget. If the price isn't an issue, you shouldn't compromise.

Has a straightforward interface with active applications and scale-out hardware
Pros and Cons
  • "The Commvault Complete Data Protection interface is straightforward to use."
  • "There could be improvements to the backup failures."

How has it helped my organization?

Commvault Complete Data Protection has scale-out hardware. It allows you to build hardware when running out of capacity or performance is degraded. You can scale the entire hardware by adding servers. The data can be distributed across all these nodes and is resilient across single or multiple node failures. In comparison, Dell EMC does not have a scale-up platform for the backup.

With Commvault Complete Data Protection, we have a scale of backup positions because we don't know if our backups or workloads may increase. With Commvault Complete Data Protection, we don't have to worry about running out of capacity or buying other hardware. The solution also has active applications between two sites that the Dell EMC network does not have. With Commvault Complete Data Protection, you can have a high-level backup server down on one site, all your backup catalogues can be replicated to another site, and you can bring the backup server from the second site in just a few seconds.

What is most valuable?

The Commvault Complete Data Protection interface is straightforward to use.

What needs improvement?

There could be improvements to the backup failures. The backup is critical because if we lose even one day of backup, it is not good. Backup failures typically happen because all end devices are prone to failures. But when failures occur, we have a long window to fix them. We usually don't need support to fix it, but I engage support if required. I can fix about eighty percent of the failures.

Commvault should implement documentation or knowledge-based articles to assist. Customers can then efficiently utilize them and fix the failures themselves. Calling support takes time, and we don't know if the SLA will be breached while waiting. So vendors should document the failures for visibility, and we can quickly fix them ourselves.

They can also improve the bugs. They have security measures for ransomware, but the bugs should be fixed. In addition, before getting a new product, the area managers always sell their product and treat us with respect and dignity, but when the product is onboarded and live, they do not engage with us in the same way. They only engage with us when there is a problem.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for eight months. We've moved 65 Microsoft workload backups to Commvault Metallic from Commvault Complete Data Protection. Still, Commvault Metallic is inconsistent because they are working on optimizing it and enhancing it monthly. We haven't had exposure for on-premises, but we'll get it in eight to ten months for Commvault Complete Data Protection.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We were doing a comparative study on Veritas, Commvault and Veeam, the leading enterprise backup solution providers. They have a single panel interface where you can manage both the on-premises workflows and the cloud, and you can migrate between them and vice versa to any storage. In comparison, Dell EMC networks are lacking, and they are still legacy solutions. They don't have the integration of their on-premise workloads to the cloud or send the cloud workloads to on-premises. They also can't manage them through a single interface. Based on this study, Commvault Complete Data Protection is the best.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution a nine out of ten. The product is really good. Commvault has wonderful security features like backup and recovery features. Other solutions have their methodology for backing up and storing data in the target disk. Commvault is very good; in most cases, they are better than Veeam. There are similarities regarding backup, recording methodology, incorporating cloud workloads and integrating cloud with on-premises but storage matters with these solutions. If you prioritize your hardware, Commvault is a good choice.

Stable, integrates well with different operating systems, but management is time-consuming
Pros and Cons
  • "Commvault integrates well with all types of operating systems and supports heterogeneous environments."
  • "The deployment process should be simplified because it is not something that just anybody can do."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and we have contracts with some of our customers to support their data centers and infrastructures. Our support is based on their needs and we choose solutions for their environment. One of the products that we use in this capacity is Commvault.

Commvault is an enterprise-level data platform that is used for backup and replication. It offers four product lines including complete backup and recovery, the HyperScale integrated appliance, disaster recovery, and Activate Analytics. We use the backup and recovery solution.

How has it helped my organization?

Commvault provides us with a single platform to move, manage, and recover data. Most enterprise solutions in this area provide similar functionality but the Commvault GUI provides better reports and access to your assets. All of the features have been integrated within one interface. On the other hand, Veritas has third-party solutions that generate better reports and offer better control over your environment, such as OpsCenter.

In terms of recovery options for data and workloads, Commvault has several features available. An important feature is that you can recover data based on your policy. It also provides the capability to back up and recover specific types of data, such as an SPS server.

The next step, after having a good backup solution, is disaster recovery. This has to take into account the software that you are using in your environment and Commvault can help with this in some aspects. For example, it can replicate your SQL servers on your disaster site. In a regular recovery scenario, I think that most backup solutions are the same.

This solution allows us to easily isolate storage targets from public networks. When we implement our backup solutions, the first step is to separate the network. We create a private network and we use separate storage for the backup in order to isolate all production services from backup services. It is very important to separate the working area because of ransomware and other threats.

Commvault also has other features to protect backup data but I prefer to have a separate backup environment with its own equipment. All of it should be physically separated from the production area. One service is for production data and the other is for backup data.

Separating the production and backup data not only helps with attacks but also helps to manage performance. In IT, we are always faced with two important metrics, which are security and performance. Using physical isolation, data protection is improved, and I prefer to use physical isolation rather than logical isolation that is available using the software.

Using this type of configuration, we were able to successfully recover data for one of our customers. They were faced with a ransomware attack and had lost more than 40% of their data. We were able to completely recover their data in less than three days.

What is most valuable?

Like other enterprise backup solutions, Commvault is very well suited for enterprise-level customers.

Commvault integrates well with all types of operating systems and supports heterogeneous environments. It integrates well with storage solutions such as NetApp, and we haven't had any trouble integrating with hardware such as tape drives or otherwise.

I like using the command-line interface versus the GUI. I find the CLI is easy to use for customizing and generating reports, as well as for managing the software. That said, I think that the GUI is enough for many administrators in a simple environment.

The support documentation is good. Based on the help and documentation, I have been able to generate scripts that I run on a daily basis to get the reports and features that I need.

What needs improvement?

The deployment process should be simplified because it is not something that just anybody can do.

One of my colleagues in Australia is using Commvault and has told me that the solution does not yet have complete support for integrating with cloud providers. Specifically, it is not integrated with Amazon services. In the future, I would like to see better integration with cloud environments.

Commvault is only installed in our Windows environment, on Windows server, and I prefer to use Linux because I find the environment simpler to use. In a Windows environment, it is not easy to use command-line-based products.

There are two people on my team that manage Commvault for my customers. It is supposed to be one of the least time-consuming solutions but in reality, it consumes 60% of their time. Compared to other backup solutions, it takes more time to manage and operate.

Commvault doesn't support container-based systems and does not offer agentless backup.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Commvault for one of our customers for less than three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, Commvault is one of the best backup solutions on the market.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This product is scalable enough, although it will be complicated to do, depending on your environment. Veeam, for example, is not as complicated to scale. The same is true with Veritas NetBackup.

I think the reason for this is that Commvault is installed only in Windows environments. Veritas NetBackup, for example, can be installed on Unix or Linux, and those operating systems are easier when it comes to scaling. Most software depends on the features that are available in the host operating system.

How are customer service and support?

We don't have access to support due to sanctions, so the support and management are done by our local engineers. It is difficult for our customers to use this type of software without support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked with other similar solutions including Veritas and Veeam. Veeam is easier to implement than Commvault, although Commvault is quicker to deploy than Veritas.

Veeam is suitable for a small business but when it comes to enterprises, Commvault is one of the solutions that we implement. Generally speaking, Commvault Backup and Commvault Complete Data Protection are good solutions for enterprise-level companies.

Veeam is easy to use and is easier to implement but we do not only deal with small businesses. Most of our customers are enterprises and we have to select the best solutions for them. Other disadvantages to Commvault are that it doesn't support container-based systems and agentless backup is not supported in this software. However, it is more powerful when it comes to integrating heterogeneous environments.

How was the initial setup?

Commvault is not a product with an easy deployment process. It is not something that just anybody can do on their own and it is best suited for enterprise users. Documentation is available online but other similar products, such as Veeam, are easier to implement. There is not enough documentation for Commvault available online.

One of my customers implemented Commvault in less than one month, which is not bad compared to other enterprise solutions like Veritas. An enterprise often includes complexities such as a heterogeneous environment, so a deployment that takes less than one month is quite reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is implementing Commvault is to make sure that they have a support contract. Support is very important, as this is a time-consuming product when it comes to management and regular maintenance.

In summary, this is an enterprise solution that you can trust in your environment for backup and recovery. In fact, it is one of the top 10 backup solutions on the market.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Scalable with a straightforward setup and good performance
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is very stable and offers a good level of performance."
  • "The product could be more convenient in terms of working with different solutions and having more integration between the different products in the market."

What is our primary use case?

I'm using the backup email feature with the hypervisor backup on VMware. I'm also working with different databases.

What is most valuable?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward.

The solution is very stable and offers a good level of performance.

The product can scale if a company needs it to.

We've noticed that technical support has recently gotten much better.

What needs improvement?

We've had issues with the solution not restoring certain environments. There also issues we find when we want to restore, for example, a cloud environment.

The product could be more convenient in terms of working with different solutions and having more integration between the different products in the market. It really should integrate better with, for example, VMware or Nutanix or Hyper-V. It would be really, really helpful if that were the case.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've dealt with the solution for the last three years or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product has been stable. There are no bugs or glitches. So far, it doesn't crash or freeze. It's reliable and the performance is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product can scale if a company needs it to. It does have the potential to expand as needed.

In our company, we have about 1,300 people using it.

How are customer service and technical support?

When I started to work with Commvault product, it wasn't very good, however, there has been a huge development in service. Their support is now working fine. They're much more helpful and professional. They've come a long way. We're satisfied with the progress they've made.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have also worked with other products, such as NetBackup and Veeam.

The pricing is a place where they all vary. While Commvault is cheaper than Veeam, it's more expensive than NetBackup.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not overly difficult or complex. It's simple. It's straightforward.

I'm unsure as to how many people are required to maintain the solution. It's not an aspect of the product that falls under my responsibility.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution isn't the cheapest. It's also not the most expensive. It's basically somewhere in the middle. However, it's a fine price. It's what you would expect to pay for a full solution. That said, for some environments, it could be considered a bit expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We are resellers.

I would advise those considering the solution, that, if they use it in conjunction with Nutanix, there may be some limitations. You can't back up, for example, on Nutanix and restore things to Veeam or other environments.

That said, we're mostly satisfied with the solution. I'd rate the product at an eight out of ten.

A simple and unified backup solution that scales well and keeps our customers happy
Pros and Cons
  • "It is much more scalable and flexible than everything else in the market."
  • "Support for this product needs to be improved because I have seen a couple of cases where it is taking more than the required time to solve issues."

What is our primary use case?

We provide our clients with this solution. Most of my customers use Commvault as a backup solution only.

How has it helped my organization?

This solution solves a lot of issues for the customers. Other solutions, such as EMC, offer an entire set of software products as part of the solution, whereas Commvault offers everything in one software application. This makes it very easy to replace competing backup solutions.

Secondly, the solution does not restrict our customers in terms of backup infrastructure. They can go and buy appliances from different partners, such as NetApp. Competing solutions are more strict with respect to the backup infrastructure, and customers don't like it. With an enterprise-level customer, you can imagine how the backup infrastructure costs grow.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the backup functionality. This solution is very good for server application backup, backing up laptops, desktops, file shares, etc. The architecture is well suited for it.

The highlight of the solution is the licensing. This is a one-window solution where you don't need to purchase different products. If you compare this to Veritas, they have different solutions such as Backup Exec, and NetBackup for servers. In Commvault, it's single product management.

The backup appliance makes it very easy for the customer to plan for future growth.

The database architecture of Commvault does not require you to have a particular database for different kinds of workloads. For example, the server, desktop, and laptop use a single, global application database. You don't have to create a different database and don't need to expand your backup infrastructure altogether.

What needs improvement?

From the perspective of the enterprise cloud archiving software, it does not resolve all of the data solutions that the customers are expecting. It works, but it is not up to the mark. They still need some time to improve the archiving and offer it within the single console management. We do not pitch the Commvault archiving solution to our customers. If they ask for it due to reasons of legality or compliance then we can supply it, but we prefer not to offer the Commvault archiving solution.

We did a POC with one of our customers who is archiving more than fifty thousand email accounts, all over the world, on a daily basis, and Commvault failed miserably. It was not able to provide that kind of performance. It can be good for up to three hundred user mailboxes, but not more than that.

The stability of this product, as a whole, needs to be improved to compete with archiving solutions such as Enterprise Vault.

Support for this product needs to be improved because I have seen a couple of cases where it is taking more than the required time to solve issues.

The documentation is not up to the mark. They need to improve their support documentation because it is a little bit weak.

They need to expand more into private, hybrid, and public cloud systems. They need to be even more open than they are now with respect to integrating with public cloud systems. Cloud is the platform that system integrators are now selling, so it is important to have that support.

For how long have I used the solution?

Between two and three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The backup performance and management are ok. However, when something is not working, it is probably fifty percent due to product immaturity.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of this solution is fine. It is much more scalable and flexible than everything else in the market. It is the one thing that they are good at. There is no doubt that they have simplified the licensing and purchasing model.

One of our enterprise-level customers for this solution is a very large telecom. They have lots of users. There are different databases and applications including Oracle, their ERP solution, Financial Suite, Greenplum, their CRM, filesharing services, and others. They also have a heterogeneous environment that includes Linux, Unix, Solaris, and Windows. There is also virtualization using VMware and Oracle virtual machines. Commvault is the only software that they have for performing backups, so they are one hundred percent reliant on it.

How are customer service and technical support?

I do not have direct contact with technical support, so to be fair, my opinion is based on everything that I hear from the implementation team. In this context, I feel that the support for this solution, overall, needs improvement.

The documentation is weak, and they need to improve their support portal. They should be aware of the known issues in the market and address them. In general, their support needs improving.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our large telecom client switched to the Commvault solution because of both cost and complexity. This product provides them with a simplified, unified solution. What they used previously was a set of several solutions. There were different backup solutions for the different platforms, desktops were backed up separately, there was different hardware to store it, and there was another tool for regulatory compliance. Each task used a different software application, and by implementing Commvault it brought everything into one solution and solved all of their problems.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. However, issues do not start at the initial setup stage. Once the environment is set up and you are going to take the backup job, pushing the enterprise policies, then problems can arise. It may be because of the backend infrastructure or the network, or something else. Whatever the issue, it is at this point where our customers sometimes need better support.

When it comes to the implementation and deployment, from day one until the backup process begins, it should not take more than one week. This is for a new system.

The deployment time for our enterprise-level, telecom customer was longer than average, in part because they already had an existing backup solution and they had to migrate to Commvault. It needed to be planned and implemented gradually, which required some cutoff dates. From start to finish, including streamlining the documentation and handing over everything, it took approximately one month.

What about the implementation team?

We normally handle the implementation of this solution for our customers. If we are having a problem, or the transition is not smooth, then we involve Commvault to assist with the implementation.

I do not have direct experience working with the Commvault support, but I have heard that they are fair.

What was our ROI?

Without stating numbers that are confidential, I can say my understanding is that our clients have seen ROI.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing is very simple, and one of the advantages of this solution. They have a subscription-based license, as well as a perpetual option, but that is all they have. It is easy to understand. There are no additional costs beyond the standard licensing fees.

The licensing fees depend on the size of the solution and the kinds of workloads. There are hardware costs, software costs, licensing, subscription, and support costs. Support contracts can be for one, two, or five years. All of this needs to be considered.

Overall, this solution provides value for the money. In my experience, compared to solutions like Veritas and Veeam, while they do have their technical pluses and minuses, Commvault can save you on average 40% initially, and then 20 to 25% annually.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are partners with several different vendors, and I evaluate solutions based upon the customer's needs. These include solutions from Veritas, Commvault, and others. Before I reach out to them, I know what their hardware costs will be, and how much it will cost to maintain each solution. I also know what the costs are to maintaining their existing solution, and can compare this for them. This is how I can show them, for example, that their ROI will be realized within a couple of years.

What other advice do I have?

I have been using backup technology for more than fifteen years.

Commvault claims that they are doing all kind of things with archiving and compliance, but I have discussed this with my implementation team and they have not been receiving good feedback. There are a lot of issues in managing it.

When it comes to a backup solution, however, I do not suggest anything other than Commvault. It gives me room so that I can meet the customer's requirements both in terms of budget and performance, and they are happy with it.

For anybody who is implementing this solution, I would suggest only doing a POC if absolutely necessary. It drags out the implementation, so it should be minimized if it is done at all.

In summary, this is a unified product that is simple to use. It is a good backup solution.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

A simple and easy-to-deploy solution that provides excellent backup and recovery features and a helpful support team
Pros and Cons
  • "The 1-Touch recovery feature is helpful for all customers."
  • "The stability of the tool could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

The product is used purely for backup and restoration of data. A company can use the product if it needs to keep the sensitive data in its disk and cloud safe.

What is most valuable?

The 1-Touch recovery feature is helpful for all customers. If anything happens in the environment and a server shuts down, we can bring it back using the 1-Touch recovery feature. Commvault Backup & Recovery is simple compared to other products.

What needs improvement?

The stability of the tool could be improved. We were not able to take a secondary copy in Metallic on-premise. Some pharmaceutical customers keep their data on-premise so that they can maintain a copy on-premise if something happens to the cloud. Metallic does not provide an option to save a copy of data on-premises.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for four years. I am using the latest version of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the stability an eight and a half or nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable. We are providing services for 30 to 45 customers in our organization.

How are customer service and support?

The support team is good. Whenever we raise tickets, the support team is available 24/7.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. As a beginner, I learned the entire deployment process in an hour. The entire configuration takes three to four hours to complete. The download takes 30 minutes. The installation is purely based on the network strength. If everything is good and we download the right package, the console can be deployed in three to four hours.

What about the implementation team?

We need to download Media Kit from the console to deploy the solution. Then, we must extract it and download the entire software package. After that, we run a set of files from the downloaded package.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is expensive, but it is worth the money. When we choose a good quality product, we must pay for it. We should not expect a good quality product at a lower price.

What other advice do I have?

I have used versions 11.28 to 11.30. I have four years of experience in technical support. We should not think that the solution is expensive. It is worth the money. It is a worthy product. Overall, I rate the product a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
