We performed a comparison between Symantec Endpoint Security and Trend Micro Smart Protection based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Endpoint Protection Platform (EPP) solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."The features that I have found most valuable are the ability to customize it and to reduce its size. It lets you run in a very small window in terms of memory and resources on legacy cash registers."
"NGAV and EDR features are outstanding."
"Additionally, when it comes to EDR, there are more tools available to assist with client work."
"The solution was relatively easy to deploy."
"The product's initial setup phase is very easy."
"Forensics is a valuable feature of Fortinet FortiEDR."
"Fortinet FortiEDR made our clients feel secure and more at ease, knowing that they had an EDR solution that would close the gap in their security posture."
"The most valuable feature is the analysis, because of the beta structure."
"The administrator's console is very good and easy to manage with it. Deploying patches, definition updates and report is simple."
"With a single console, you get control over Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. This control is most valuable."
"It is easy to use. Its interface is user-friendly. So, anybody can use it very well, which is a good thing."
"All Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) features, such as anti-malware, zero-day attack protection, and IPS features, are valuable."
"The installation was very easy."
"The solution, especially in older versions, is quite stable."
"The product blocks computer viruses."
"Some important features that are included are the built-in firewall and device control."
"One of the most valuable features of Trend Micro Smart Protection is the integration with other solutions."
"The most valuable feature of Trend Micro Smart Protection is automatic scanning."
"The most valuable aspect of the solution is that it also protects our smartphones. It's one of the reasons we use Trend Micro specifically."
"The stability is good and I like the level of performance I can get."
"We do get notifications, which are helpful."
"Trend Micro has consistently been recognized as a leader for endpoint security on Gartner, which has been our top priority. Based on my personal experience, we encountered fewer ransomware attacks for Trend Micro customers in Sri Lanka."
"The next-generation antivirus features are excellent."
"It is their most comprehensive endpoint protection solution. It includes DLP and Office 365. It also includes device control and the rest of the little bells and whistles that the traditional AV vendors have."
"We've had a lot of false positives; things incorrectly flagged that require manual configuration to allow. Even worse, after we allow a legitimate program, it sometimes gets flagged again after an update. This has caused a lot of extra work for my team."
"FortiEDR can be improved by providing more detailed reporting."
"The solution is not stable."
"Everything with Fortinet having to do with their cloud services. They need to invest more in their internal infrastructure that they are running in the cloud. One of the things I find with their cloud environment compared to others' is that they go cheap on the equipment. So it causes some performance degradation."
"I would like the solution to extend beyond endpoint protection and include other attack surfaces such as other network components."
"The dashboard isn't easy to access and manage."
"Making the portal mobile friendly would be helpful when I am out of office."
"Once, we had an event that was locked and blocked, but information about it came to us two or three days later."
"Installation of the tool on a workstation requires some technical knowledge, which could be more straightforward."
"It would be nice to have customized reports integrated on the main console with no additional DB server or BI server."
"When, Microsoft releases a new OS version twice a year, you never know if the current version of Symantec Endpoint Protection will support it. You can have a lag between when Microsoft releases a new client - and then the current version doesn't work correctly - and it could be some months between updates from Symantec."
"Nowadays, threats are changing, and they are moving more towards script control and zero-day attacks. So, we would like to have more control similar to an EDR solution. Symantec Endpoint Protection has certainly come a long way as a traditional antivirus, but because the threats are changing, we would like to have more EDR features so that we have a detailed view of the source from where the infection entered the environment and whether it has tried to connect any other endpoint. It should provide such a detailed view for investigation. It should protect against zero-day threats, etc. These are the key enhancements that can make it a complete solution for any enterprise. Currently, we have seen organizations going for two solutions: antivirus and EDR. With both these capabilities, it would be a complete package."
"Future releases should ideally be cheaper."
"Its GUI needs improvement. It's good, but it needs to be improved in terms of management and reporting."
"Symantec has not properly promoted Symantec Endpoint Security in the market. In my opinion, the product should be properly promoted."
"The stability was not the best. There were times when antivirus updates broke it. It wasn't necessarily self-updating - at least, not in terms of the virus signatures. It updated in terms of the executable files. Therefore, when Windows updates would come out, they often couldn't be installed, or the computer would hang due to the fact that the updates weren't compatible with the antivirus."
"This product would be improved if it had more monitoring capabilities so that it could stop threats before they break into the network and damage it."
"The solution could be more stable and secure."
"The solution needs to improve the deployment so it aligns with the latest Microsoft patches and upgrades. It makes the deployment process lengthy and painful."
"The administration could be better. They could decrease the administrative burden and enable easier management. There are many features, options, and settings which is quite challenging for some of our customers. The complexity of the interface is also an issue. From a software point of view, I would prefer to see actual signatures and actual protection patterns, rather than new features."
"Documentation-wise, they are a disaster. If you want to know something about Trend Micro, you will not find anything useful from Trend Micro themselves. You have to basically dig some blog, or you need to seek some expert to help you understand what they are offering. I have never seen such a good product with such disastrous documentation. Feature-wise, almost all vendors are providing the same features, but it is all about the integration. For example, Trend Micro is promoting their endpoint protection suite, but they never mention about the integration that they are offering with their EDR solution. They are treating each product as a separate island, and you don't know much about their integration. It would be good if they can focus on integration."
"Trend Micro Smart Protection is a very system-intensive product, and it would be better if it could be made less burdensome on the resources."
"It does not provide insights into what is being done."
"Trend Micro Smart Protection could improve automatic scanning because sometimes it pops up when I am doing my work. It would be helpful to have a feature to have it only automatically scan when the system is on standby mode. I would be able to be more efficient with my work. Additionally, security could improve."
