Provides ease of enabling a server in a DR location, but needs improvement in backing up very large objects
Pros and Cons
  • "The data reduction feature and the ease of enabling a server in a DR location are the most valuable."
  • "Its ability to back up very large objects can be improved. In terms of new features, they can include the ability to use cloud services, like S3, more natively."

What is our primary use case?

It was initially used for remote office, branch office backups, but eventually, it started to be used for small and large data centers.

What is most valuable?

The data reduction feature and the ease of enabling a server in a DR location are the most valuable.

What needs improvement?

Its ability to back up very large objects can be improved. In terms of new features, they can include the ability to use cloud services, like S3, more natively.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It has good stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It has good scalability, which is a good thing for VMware infrastructures. I see it mostly being used in midsize environments or focused on VMware infrastructure backups. It does a great job there. The negative of this solution is that it certainly wouldn't cover a super large enterprise where they have other tool needs. You probably won't use it for the entire data center or for large Oracle or SQL backups.

How are customer service and technical support?

I don't interact with them a lot. I would summarize them as being average.

How was the initial setup?

Initially, it was pretty complex to install, but it got easier over the years. It is still not the easiest of all tools to install. It certainly is not as easy to install as Veeam. It is probably comparable to a Commvault in terms of installation difficulty.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Dell EMC Avamar a six out of ten.

Stability has improved since we first started using it, but it still has a ways to go and could also benefit from a web-based UI

What is our primary use case?

File level, backup and recovery of data stored on AIX, Linux, and Windows server to Data Domain storage.

How has it helped my organization?

The product works. It does, however, require a significant amount of handholding from support. The support is good, but we should not have to reach out to them so often.

What is most valuable?

File level, SQL Server and NDMP (NetApp) backups. Both backup and recovery work well for all three types of data.

What needs improvement?

  • Stability has improved since we first started using it, but it still has a ways to go. The systems also collect metadata that builds over time. It will build until it cannot build anymore and fills up your nodes. I have plenty of space on my Data Domain, but I'm running out of space on the nodes due to metadata creep.
  • It could also benefit from a web-based UI. The Java UI is clunky at best.

For how long have I used the solution?

More than five years.

Good image and file backup capabilities, but technical support should be more knowledgeable
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are image backups and file backups."
  • "Technical support should be more knowledgeable."

What is our primary use case?

We use this product for Windows and Linux servers, and we have both file and database backups stored on them. We use them at smaller sites, which are small offices that are located around the world.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are image backups and file backups.
Image backups are very good to use, since they don´t require a backup agent.

What needs improvement?

Technical support should be more knowledgeable.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Dell EMC Avamar for more than 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The newest version is not very stable, which is something that should be improved.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have perhaps 70 clients/server and have not tried to scale beyond that. We have about 40 users in total and do not plan to increase our usage at this time.

How are customer service and technical support?

The quality of technical support varies. Sometimes they are very good, and sometimes they are not. They should be faster and more knowledgeable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We also use Dell EMC NetWorker.

How was the initial setup?

I was not involved in the initial setup but from what I understand, it's pretty simple.

What about the implementation team?

There are five of us in the technical team who deploy and maintain our solutions.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of this product should be cheaper.

What other advice do I have?

This is a product that I can recommend for small sites without anything special.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Good stability and backup speed, but the GUI and reporting need to be improved
Pros and Cons
  • "It works quickly and is very stable."
  • "The screen design is a bit back-dated."

What is our primary use case?

We are system integrators who are selling backup solutions, and Dell EMC Avamar is one of the products that we implement for our clients.

I had come across it for backing up laptops and VMware but previously, I have had clients using it to backup system machines like AIX, Solaris, and others. Slowly, people are moving away from those.

What is most valuable?

Using Avamar for VM backup is pretty good, but we've used it for other purposes as well.

It works quickly and is very stable.

What needs improvement?

The screen design is a bit back-dated.

The reports are not very presentable.

The price of this product should be lower.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been working with Dell EMC Avamar for a few years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a very stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Avamar is quite scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

With respect to technical support, sometimes you get a good technician or a good engineer, and you can get the problem resolved pretty fast. If on the other hand, you get someone with a very heavy accent then you can speak for three hours and not understand what the other is trying to say.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We work with quite a number of backup products including Veritas NetBackup, Veritas Backup Exec, Dell EMC Networker, Dell EMC Avamar, and Rubrick.

The choice of product that I recommend depends on the situation and what the customer is saying. If they are not happy with one then I can suggest others that are good, too.

What other advice do I have?

If my customer is already using an existing product then I will not recommend that they switch unless there are serious problems. If there is some heavy restructuring, for instance, because a previous person knew the environment very well, it will be difficult to take over. It is best if they have something very simple to manage.

In general, it is not easy to switch from one backup platform to another because of incompatibility.

My advice for anybody who is implementing Dell EMC Avamar is that it's always good to have a plan first. You want to know exactly what you have on-hand that you need to back up.

Overall, this is a good product. The stability and backup speed are very good but the GUI and reports are not something that a new user can get used to.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Quick and easy to set up with good scalability potential
Pros and Cons
  • "We've found the product to be stable."
  • "It would be helpful if the product offered more integration potential."

What is most valuable?

The solution is easy to use.

We've found the product to be stable.

The scalability is there if a company needs to expand it out.

The initial setup is easy and the deployment is fast.

What needs improvement?

The solution should offer a better data domain.

It would be helpful if the product offered more integration potential.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've dealt with the solution for three or four years at this point. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. there are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. The performance is quite good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability potential is good. If you are a company that needs to scale, you can do so with this product.

We do not have a lot of customers using this solution. Only maybe five to six percent of our customer base uses it.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is quite good. they are helpful and responsive and we are satisfied with the level of support they provide.

How was the initial setup?

We did not find the initial setup to be overly complex. It's pretty straightforward.

The deployment is fast. You can have everything up and running in three to four hours.

We have four to five people on staff that can handle deployment and maintenance duties.

What about the implementation team?

I handled the implementation myself. I did not need the help of an implementor or consultant. I can do it alone, in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

At this time, we do not pay any licenses to Dell.

What other advice do I have?

We don't have a lot of customers that use the product, however, we are recommending it often.

Our customers are using the latest version of the product, however, I can't speak to the exact version number.

On a scale from one to ten, I'd rate the solution at a seven.

I'd recommend the solution to other users and companies. It's worked well for a few of our customers.
