Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It reduces the time to resolve issues and requires less manpower.""Despite dozens of deployments across hundreds of applications- we have yet to see a case where AD is negatively impacting application execution or functionality.""The solution helps us save a lot of time on certain tasks.""The most valuable feature of the solution is the fact that it is very easy to use, making it easy to implement...It is a very stable solution.""Autodiscovery of application topology, based on real user traffic.""Transition tracing is the most valuable is pretty easy and useful, but the user experience piece is also good.""It has improved our organization with its ability to catch issues quickly and fix them.""It gives me the ability to trace logs between transactions, for example, a DB transaction or JVM transaction from one hub to the other. I can easily find out where the problem is or where the bottleneck of the issues lies."

More AppDynamics Pros →

"I like the drill-down feature, that it can drill down to the code level to point to where the problems are. It's also helpful for the developers to identify what exactly happens, rather than the operation team having to do so. It works well for the developers to fix issues.""Scalability is outstanding. It won't tax our environment at all as it will scale sideways.""We enabled UEM for all of our applications. This allows us to see exactly what the client is experiencing.""The solution's ability to assess the severity of anomalies based on the actual impact to users and business KPIs is great. It's exactly what we need. The severity impact is based on the users, the availability, and the impact it has on your business.""It gives you a great level of detail into whatever the issue is: Using troubleshooting and getting to the root cause.""Dynatrace is a single platform. It has all these different tools but they are actually all baked into the OneAgent technology. Within that OneAgent... you have the different tool sets. You have threat analysis, memory dumps, Java analysis, the database statements, and so on. It's all included in this OneAgent. So the management is actually quite easy.""Provides more visibility into applications.""Comprehensive suite of solutions that can address all aspects of applications from dev to ops."

More Dynatrace Pros →

"Docker containers are completely supported, kind of like "first class citizens".""The ability to stop/pause and capture logs when something happens is the most valuable feature."

More Sysdig Monitor Pros →

Cons
"I would like to see more artificial intelligence and machine learning brought in to monitor the statement and payment sum issues we have.""The QA and test environment need improvement.""Rolling out version upgrades is a difficult job at times.""This solution is expensive.""We constantly need to improve our alert mechanism because we get a lot of false-positive alerts. These are not real errors. In addition, for end-user monitoring, sometimes, we are not able to catch all user activities. Because of not being able to follow the user activity from the start to the end, we are missing out on the performance issues.""The price of the solution could improve.""I would like to be able to monitor both cloud an on-prem infrastructures, displayed in one dashboard.""The resolution time takes longer than expected."

More AppDynamics Cons →

"sometimes it happens that we are not able to capture things. For example, if a person is logged in from India, from the city of Mumbai, and is using a Chrome browser, and his email ID is xyz@abc.com. But what happens is, Dynatrace just fetches two pieces of the information, not all of it. Sometimes it gets it all, sometimes it doesn't.""I think they're working on even more integration from external third party input, but that is ongoing. So the faster it's there the better. Clock monitoring is one of these areas where improvements can be made.""I haven't had a chance to go through all of it, but I would like to see the ability, from an administrative standpoint, for it to collect statistics. I want to be able to see the servers that the agents are installed on. I want it to be able to start doing collections for me by platform: How many Linux servers do I have? How many Windows servers do I have? Statistically give me the information of how things are performing, but I want that in a dashboard, where I can look at a dashboard and I can look at a section. So the ability for me to drill down will make it easier for me.""They could also, develop an observability platform where you could have the ability to inject events, locks, and traces.""This solution needs improvement in terms of automation.""Enterprise application monitoring for synthetic, as is, only captures http/https transactions.""One thing we'd like to see is mobile native replay. They don't have a timeline on it yet, but that's one of the key things we're looking at, to get rid of one of our incumbent products that does replay.""They should include more mission learning into the product and provide additional performance metrics for application learning."

More Dynatrace Cons →

""Events" reporting (errors, crashes, etc.) is not clear at all in a Mesos environment (i.e., it's not clear what specific container is the one that went down). In a Docker Compose environment, it may be way better.""It is needs to automate the actions to take when an alert is triggered."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The product’s licencing policy is competitive. However, properly identify and size your needs to get the best rate."
  • "As a technical person, and as an application development team, they all understand that this is the right tool for us. But when it comes to budget and financial matters, it takes days and weeks to convince upper management to buy this tool. So they should do something more on licensing costs."
  • "It is not a cheap tool, but you also save in manpower to setup because it is easy and fast. At the end of the day, I think the revenue is much better. BUT, they have an awful co-term mode of licensing."
  • "It could be cheaper. It's a little cost prohibitive. There are so many features that also show a lot of value, but it’s not always easy to justify the cost."
  • "Because it is priced per JVM, the price can increase pretty fast, into the millions. We have had challenges because we had to justify the price to our clients, as well, when we are putting in certain tools."
  • "It would be better if there were more solutions incorporated into the base price. "
  • "The way it is structured in terms of price could be better. You pay for individual modules and that adds on to the cost, which detracts you from implementing those modules and slows you down."
  • "Take into consideration what you get for specific pricing models and how much it costs to add on things you may need later."
  • More AppDynamics Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Pricing is based on the number of servers monitored, so for big applications, it is a bit expensive."
  • "Licensing is a bit complicated for Dynatrace, and pricing is dependent on how much your organization invests."
  • "We found an issue within the first week of ownership that has been costing us more than the entire license cost."
  • "Product pricing can seem a little over complex, however this is minor and does not detract from the benefits of the solution."
  • "Getting the first agents installed, getting information, and coverage in a initial set of systems can be done in hours and with a low cost entry point."
  • "Price (of the product) is a major concern for all the clients I work with."
  • "The licensing model is confusing in solutioning clients for the number of hosts needed to deploy."
  • "The product is superior to others, but it comes with a price tag that is often difficult to position back to clients."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for both Dynatrace and AppDynamics is for application performance monitoring (APM). The main reason for having application performance monitoring is, when we see something is running slowly, we can immediately look to see where the issue is at before our systems crash on us. So, one of the major roles it plays for us is the ability to keep our system performing in peak shape. Our ability to see issues coming, then quickly isolate and correct problems was our main use of Dynatrace. We are not there yet with AppDynamics. It has been ten months, and we are still spinning our wheels trying to set it up and figure out how it works.

How has it helped my organization?

When collecting data with Dynatrace, we saw every single transaction that happened in real-time. Whereas, with AppDynamics, they take snapshots, and we only see a tenth of the information that we did with Dynatrace. While the information is there, if an issue with an application happened in-between snapshots, it would not be readily identifiable. You would have to go hunt and peck for it. We don't have time for that.

    What is most valuable?

Using Dynatrace, we collected application metrics within three hours, in most cases. The majority of our triage were within three hours, then we were able to discover the root cause of issues. With Dynatrace today, you have a single agent. You stick it on a server, and it doesn't matter if it's Linux, Windows, etc. It…

    Reviews from Real Users

Below are some reviews and helpful feedback written by PeerSpot users currently using the AppDynamics solution.

Chandan K., Associate Director at a financial services firm, says, “The tracing is the most important aspect of the solution. The way it traces the information within the particular application or within the particular infrastructure is great. That actually helps. Apart from that, all of the data that's in the production APM is good.”

PeerSpot user, Yacin H., Responsable Commercial at Zen Networks, mentions, “You can use one module for each server, for each application, and for each API”. He also adds, “With the solution you can put add-ons on it and it's very customizable. You can customize it easily. If you want something that the tool doesn't have, you can add it easily.”

Another reviewer, a Head Of Information Technology at a mining and metals company expresses, "The solution helps us save a lot of time on certain tasks. The dashboards of the solution are excellent. The stability is good.”

David G., Systems Engineer at a tech services company, states, “The solution has beneficial application analysis, is highly scalable, and has a great ROI.”
