Pros
It is a robust solution that would help anyone get to the solution and resolution pretty fast.​It has helped us by reducing the number of incidents that we have had in the past.What I like about it, is how it auto-discovers everything rapidly; within a matter of seconds you get to see the business transaction and how it's mapped within the product itself.​The stability for the solution is pretty solid overall.Being able to get down to the individual code level to see where transactions are taking time. It has helped troubleshoot issues immensely and other tools can't provide this.Some of the main benefits are being able to quickly identify when transactions start to slow or run into issues, or hiccups if you will.The most valuable component of it is taking that guessing out of troubleshooting problems. We no longer have to rely on an architect, or an application person, or someone's memory of how the transaction moves throughout the infrastructure and the different dependencies that it has on it. We can see it right there and we find out more that we ever imagined.We like the user's experience piece: being able to see, from the browser perspective, the user's behavior; being able to answer questions from our customers about why such and such happened, why the performance was slow, why we had an error.

The most important thing is that it tells us where the latency in throughput and response time are.As New Relic is already integrated with Drupal, we can get our projects done with best practice and with the best value that we believe in.It has the ability to monitor random URLs not tied to the one pinger per application (though it costs extra).They instrument up from the bottom to the top – every piece of code - they have a very perfect read of what’s being done, and how long it’s taking.The most valuable feature is the New Relic APM module to deep-dive into the application, to get bottlenecks to the surface, and to improve application performance. Also, the New Relic Insights module creates a real-time dashboard on application performance to create awareness for the DevOps team.

Cons
The analytics feature provides us some information, but is limited for now. We want to see how we can consume the data further down and have analytics guys look at the datacenter information.​We're not quite there yet, but the thing I would like to see is to really have that view of how issues relate to the business. Often enough, the tools that IT have for IT stop at the IT level. They cannot go into the business level part. They can't understand, because they don't have the information that the business needs to provide them with - for example how much an hour of downtime costs the business. For us, in IT, it's an hour of downtime, but it equates to money and equates to hours lost and equates to a lot of things, and often enough we don't have that information. This is where I would like to see us going.The initial setup was relatively complex because we were trying to implement into environments that they did not yet support.The messaging layer is not really capturable and measurable right now.I'd really like to see more dashboarding abilities. The ability to do workflows within dashboards, being able to start at a high level and click into it with custom dashboards. I think most of the time, we are creating our own custom dashboards, and I'd just like to see more ability with that.I would also like to see it baselining more metrics out-of-the-box. We have a lot of rich data, but if someone says, "Well how did that look last week?" If you're looking at a problem and you see, for example, a long SQL statement, is that the root cause, or is it always slow. it's difficult to get historical data.I think scalability is what we're struggling with. I would say it's okay, but there's a little bit of room for improvement.With Linux or Windows, it automatically takes care of everything, so there's no need for you to do any manual config changes. But when it comes to AIX - because I implemented it two weeks back - you have to go back to kind of an AppMon approach, where you instrument agents for .NET applications. So if Dynatrace could make those changes and make it automated, that would be one of the biggest action items.

Some of our customers see New Relic as a promising product to have, and we would like to deliver it to them. The only way we would be able to do that would be if we had server appliance for clients that we could install in their data centres.I think that there have been some questionable product enhancements. Over a year ago, New Relic rolled out a new navigation that really disrupted our workflow.It gives you amazing statistics, but doesn’t give you enough information about what to do with the statistics.They need to improve the alerting and dashboarding as these are the key features in DevOps.

Pricing and Cost Advice
The limitations I see are more to do - and maybe it's because of the nature of the job I have - but they have to do with pricing. It's a little bit pricey. It's a very good tool. It's worth the price, to a certain degree. But it's hard to justify when it's that costly.There is a license issue where if we increase the memory we have to up the licenses. I was unaware of that going in. I thought it was scalable without all the paperwork behind the scenes. ​​There was also some complexity in the adoption rate of it because of how costly the licensing is.​Make sure your leadership buy-in is in place. Ensure leadership understands that an APM solution is a fairly expensive, so they know what they are getting into.​A Dynatrace partner will always be willing to give you a trial. Go through the trial to see if there is a benefit for your company.​Do a PoC and see if you like it.The pricing is a little high, but still cheaper than competitors because Dynatrace at least has pay-as-you-go. Others do not. However, the pricing is confusing. I wish it was more simplified when trying to price out moving to a yearly contract.Decodes on less used/popular protocols are available, but they should be included. Additional investment should not be required.

If it’s the right tool, it doesn’t matter what it costs because you’re going to get it back many-fold from your productivity.It would be nice if we could buy it annually instead of monthly.Cost is significant with a lot of extras.The monthly cost os $1000 per server per month, but it could be even more. We pay about $250 for the server, and then New Relic wants over $1000 to give us statistics on those servers.New Relic is either free with low retention and minimal functionalities, or expensive with full options and retention.
