Fortinet FortiSwitch - Secure Access Other Advice

DP
vice president at IMP Solutions

I rate Fortinet FortiSwitch Secure Access eight out of 10. It's a strong product that's easy to manage. Everything runs through FortiGate, so you've got to have FortiGate within your network. You can do it without it, but I wouldn't recommend it.

The FortiGate is the piece that allows the switching, wireless, and firewall to perform the best. I wouldn't buy switching from Fortinet on its own and put it in. I certainly wouldn't put it in a hybrid network where you've got a mix of another manufacturer and Fortinet.

I would 100% recommend it because you can extend the security, and you can optimize the SD-WAN or the traffic at the application level and not only at the traditional VLAN level.

For us, the technical training was helpful. We did that. It's not strictly necessary, but it makes things a lot easier, especially to understand best practices.

We are quite happy with it. There are some complaints from our technicians, but overall, we are satisfied.

The platform's most valuable feature in terms of network security is the ability to utilize network access control to identify the device you connect and apply policies directly to the device.

We can link the FortiSwitch with other Fortinet security solutions to create a resilient network. If one device encounters downtime, the traffic is rerouted to another, ensuring continuous operation.

It's a comprehensive solution, and one needs to transition all the infrastructure to Fortinet's ecosystem. Later, managing all the aspects becomes straightforward, with a unified view across the entire network.

I rate it an eight out of ten.

We have cloud solutions as well, where we have FortiCloud, a cloud solution around our switches.

I rate the product a ten out of ten for reliability and scalability. It's sometimes a bit difficult to configure. If we want to add another FortiSwitch to uplink on another one, it is difficult to remember where we have to go to tell the other switch to also talk to the FortiLink. However, I am confident that that is a security feature because it means nobody can just get on and do anything. Overall, I rate the product a ten out of ten.

To anyone planning to use the product, we are scaling it to other mining sites as well. Because this is the first location, we've done everything here. Once everything is deployed here successfully, we will scale it onto the other sites. We are ready to install the product onto another site, which we have already put in the firewall. But instead of the switches, we went with the APs first and have deployed about 165 APs. Now, we are waiting for the switches to come in so we can also put in the switches to complete the work. We will then scale from there to the next site.

Having the opportunity to use the entire Fortinet ecosystem, will make our life much simpler. As opposed to buying separate vendor products, with Fortinet we can use FortiNAC, Fortinet Access points, FortiSwitch, and FortiGate. This will save us time and effort and we can rest assured that Fortinet is always looking to provide great customer support.

I would recommend people to use FortiSwitch as it is less expensive than other products. They can use it with FortiGate. It will be pretty simple if they already have experience with FortiGate. FortiSwitch provides a lot of companies with big enterprise functionality, and it is less expensive than products like Cisco Switch.

I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

I am working on a roadmap to ensure that everything is running on a Secure Access and not just from the switches. I am currently working on introducing SSO and Active Directory. It's going to be extensive, where everything will be running on a secure level.

This solution is affordable, it makes sense, and it's easy to manage so it saves you time in both practice and in technical training. You don't have to train anyone to work with Secure Access. If you are going to invest in training, just invest in the training for FortiGate. After that, your environment is good to go because everything else is self-explanatory and easy on the interface for the Secure Access and all of Fortinet solutions.

It makes economic and security sense for any organization that is intending to deploy this kind of solution. I wish that it had come sooner.

There are several switches that I have looked at, and when I am looking at the capabilities of other switches there is still much to be discovered on Fortinet. They don't have all of the capabilities, especially when it comes to the throughput.

I would rate this solution a six out of ten.

If you want to run full integration with the secure network architecture from a single point, you can use Fortinet. It's suitable for small and medium size business. You can run all your products like the wireless access points, and switches, and FortiGate and firewall from the single vendor. It will give you the security fabric features to take you to a high level of reporting and management skill.

It's important to keep up with the technical news. They have released multiple versions of the firmware with new updates and it's important to follow the new version of firmware update for Fortinet. I think there are some features where Cisco is better than Fortinet. The decision to purchase one product over another depends on your needs, your budget, and your skill.

I would rate this solution a nine out of 10.
