Valuable replication and backup capabilities, and good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are replication and backup."
  • "When it comes to performing backups, the dashboard is not intuitive and not user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider and we implement HPE products such as SimpliVity for our customers. I am not a customer and I do not use all of the products that we sell, although I know these solutions. SimpliVity is a product that also we use ourselves.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are replication and backup.

This solution is very intuitive and flexible.

The vendor was quick to provide support for VMs in the product.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see support for having different clustered environments for production and testing.

When it comes to performing backups, the dashboard is not intuitive and not user-friendly. This is something that should be improved. It should be easier to perform backups.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using HPE SimpliVity for approximately four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Using SimpliVity improves the stability of the environment.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is the best in the market. We have between 10 and 15 users in our organization, and it is installed in the data center.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is very good and I would rate them a ten out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy and it will take five or six hours to deploy.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is considering this product is that it is easy to deploy and set up replication for use in a data center. It can be used in production for DLP.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Simple, scalable, and comes with good tech support
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's simplicity is its most valuable feature. The usability is also good."
  • "The initial setup was a little complex because we were in the first version, fresh releases."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for VDI.

How has it helped my organization?

It helps us in supplying desktops to users.

What is most valuable?

The solution's simplicity is its most valuable feature. The usability is also good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good and simple.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support at HPE has always been really good, with anything I've done with them.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Cisco HyperFlex. It was just another system that was brought to our attention by a different reseller. SimpliVity was introduced to us by sales and we needed something like that.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was a little complex because we were in the first version, fresh releases.

What about the implementation team?

We used a reseller and our experience with them was great.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at NetApp but they couldn't do stretch clustering.

What other advice do I have?

Evaluate it.

In terms of rating the solution, I have to go with an eight out of ten. A ten is hard to get from me. There's no perfect system and every system has its little hang-ups and issues.

It offers instant file-level restore. No deployment or scalability issues.

What is most valuable?

Instant file-level restore is the product's most valuable feature.

How has it helped my organization?

We have marketing users that tend to save over their files by accident and before SimpliVity, I could not restore a file from 15 minutes ago. Now, I can do that for my users.

I also was able to install a disaster recovery site with this solution and it has given our IT team peace of mind knowing we have full backups offsite.

What needs improvement?

The production server infrastructure is an area with room for improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used it for six months.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No issues with deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We did encounter stability issues at first due to a CPU issue.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Customer service is top-notch.

Technical Support:

Technical support went above an beyond to help get our network environment ready for the upgrade.

We had old end-of-life and end-of-support servers.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup was very straightforward with fantastic documentation from the project team.

What about the implementation team?

An in-house team implemented it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I recommend a five-year contract, as it will give you the best ROI.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I researched many different options before choosing.

I switched from a non-hyperconverged solution. This was less hardware and VMware licensing to manage.

What is most valuable?

Seamless backup, quick deployment.

What needs improvement?

SimpliVity requires an arbiter to be installed on a non-virtualized (or at least on non-SimpliVity virtualized) storage. This means you can not totally virtualize your environment on SimpliVity. I would like to see the arbiter on a system that is virtualized and eliminate that external portion.

For how long have I used the solution?

About a year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

The VAR that helped with deployment did not know that the arbiter could not be virtualized and this lead to problems down the road when installing updates.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not scaled it yet.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

Good.

Technical Support:

Excellent.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I switched from a non-hyperconverged solution. This was less hardware and VMware licensing to manage.

How was the initial setup?

Initial setup took a day.

What about the implementation team?

The VAR was still learning the product. I would rate their level of expertise as low.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I also evaluated Nutanix and Scale.

A great solution for seamless experience and ease of use
Pros and Cons
  • "Its ease of use is valuable. It is being used in a mining company. They wanted their working nodes to be seamless, and they wanted ease of use. That's why they opted for SimpliVity. They are running VMware virtual machines on it."
  • "They can bring more awareness about this product. In this part of the world or this region, people normally don't know about SimpliVity and its capabilities. The company we have it sold to hasn't been able to fully utilize all the features or understand the features. So, product awareness should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We are a solution provider. We don't usually use it for our own workload or for ourselves. We are partners of both Dell EMC and HPE. We sell their products and provide solutions based on their products to our end customers.

It is being used in a mining company. I'm currently working with it to upgrade the storage capacity for the load that was sold.

What is most valuable?

Its ease of use is valuable. It is being used in a mining company. They wanted their working nodes to be seamless, and they wanted ease of use. That's why they opted for SimpliVity. They are running VMware virtual machines on it.

What needs improvement?

They can bring more awareness about this product. In this part of the world or this region, people normally don't know about SimpliVity and its capabilities. The company we have it sold to hasn't been able to fully utilize all the features or understand the features. So, product awareness should be improved.

Its scalability should be improved. We should be able to add drives without disrupting the services.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have known this product for the last three years or more, but we first sold it to a customer in 2020 or 2021.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I don't have first-hand experience in managing it day to day. So, I don't know if there are any lapses somewhere.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are currently working on upgrading the storage capacity for a customer from medium to large. The solution is scalable, but they have to work more on the scalability part. That's because you can scale out and scale up, but based on my experience with this customer, scaling up is going to be disruptive. It's going to disrupt their service because the storage has got into a place where they cannot just add the storage node to it without disrupting the service. They have to look at that angle. When you're adding drives, it should be able to just load the drives, do the recalculation, and just work without disrupting your service.

How are customer service and support?

I would rate them an eight out of 10.

How was the initial setup?

Its setup is straightforward.

What other advice do I have?

It is a great solution coming from a pioneer in technology. If you want to go for it, you can go for it, but you have to be sure that this is what you want.

I would rate it an eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Top 20
Stable and quick to install
Pros and Cons
  • "Best for companies just starting out."
  • "Product doesn't scale."

What needs improvement?

The product's installation process could be made easier.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with this solution for two to three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This product doesn't scale - it's for small environments with two or three nodes, no more.

How are customer service and support?

Tech support is ok.

How was the initial setup?

Installation doesn't take a long time, one or two days. Deployment and maintenance can be done by one person.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost of this product is high, so some customers may be better off building their own system or buying their own servers and set of devices.

What other advice do I have?

This solution is best for companies just starting out or who are working with a small environment and are looking for a small infrastructure. Those intending to install SimpliVity should have vCenter integrated somewhere beforehand. I would give this solution a score of eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
