The product is easy to use and enables efficient communication, but permissions are a little bit over-complicated
Pros and Cons
  • "The posting features are valuable."
  • "The permissions are a little bit over-complicated."

What is our primary use case?

We use the product for communications within the company. It's like our internal LinkedIn.

How has it helped my organization?

The product helps us know what is going on in other departments.

What is most valuable?

The posting features are valuable. We do not use it for much else.

What needs improvement?

The solution should provide a Windows application. The permissions are a little bit over-complicated.

For how long have I used the solution?

My organization has been using the solution since last year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven’t had any issues with the solution. It had gone down when Azure went down a month ago, but I didn’t notice.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution integrates with Microsoft really well. It is easily scalable. The tool is being used company-wide. We have around 550 employees. A recent post was seen by 402 people.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used SharePoint before using Yammer.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is pretty straightforward. It involves creating companies and communities. We can give escalated permissions to different communities.

What about the implementation team?

It probably took a week to deploy the tool fully. The deployment was done in-house. A person in my department and I deployed the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is not bad. It was not a big add-on. Price was not a deciding factor in buying the solution.

What other advice do I have?

If someone wants an easy way to communicate changes, promotions, and news in general, it's a good product. You can post pictures of events people go to, a big job that got completed, anniversaries, and things like that. It doesn't really get easier. It works just like any other social media platform. Overall, I rate the product a six out of ten.

The solution should provide some built-in templates, but its integration with all the services of Office 365 is good
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of Yammer is its integration with all the services of Office 365."
  • "Microsoft should work on templating and provide some built-in templates so that the changes can automatically roll out to all the configured communities."

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Yammer is its integration with all the services of Office 365.

What needs improvement?

Microsoft should work on templating and provide some built-in templates so that the changes can automatically roll out to all the configured communities.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Yammer for four months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Yammer is a very stable product. I rate Yammer ten out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

More than 3,000 users are using Yammer in our organization.

I rate Yammer a nine out of ten for scalability.

How are customer service and support?

Yammer's technical support is very good. The import bulk email option of the Yammer community was not working for us. So I raised a ticket, and their customer support team provided a solution within two days.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Yammer is very, very easy.

What about the implementation team?

Yammer's deployment is very easy. As we get the license and standard access, we define our incoming and outgoing connectors to our existing cloud. It takes a maximum of one day to configure the solution with our on-premises Exchange or Active Directory with Azure AD Connect.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Compared to other products like Amazon, Yammer's pricing is fine.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is deployed on-cloud in our organization.

Overall, I rate Yammer a five out of ten.

Mostly used to broadcast team ideas, updates, and achievements, but it has very limited features
Pros and Cons
  • "Yammer brings in the most relevant posts to the users."
  • "Yammer has very limited features."

What is our primary use case?

Yammer is mostly used to broadcast team ideas, updates, and achievements that can be shared amongst each other. We used the solution mainly for team updates and news. It is like an internal media where people can share their achievements.

What is most valuable?

Yammer keeps communication very clean, without any clutter. If you compare it with LinkedIn, LinkedIn shows you posts that are not relevant. Yammer brings in the most relevant posts to the users.

What needs improvement?

Yammer has very limited features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Yammer for four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Yammer is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Yammer is a scalable product for a large organization.

What about the implementation team?

A large team is not required for Yammer's deployment. Two to three people should be sufficient for the solution's deployment.

What other advice do I have?

Since Yammer is internal to the organization, the posts are all relevant to the organization.

Yammer's maintenance depends on how large the content is. For a small organization, just one person should be sufficient for the solution's maintenance.

The solution is deployed on-cloud in our organization.

Yammer is not an essential tool unless the marketing division feels it's nice for the organization.

Overall, I rate Yammer a six or seven out of ten.

Allows communication with a global audience. I would like to see more functionality and more integration with other solutions.

What is most valuable?

Communication. We are able to communicate and keep in touch with a global audience.

As a global company, we have IT staff and users around the world. If we need to communicate a message or just make other people aware of an outage or other important information, the easiest way is to post it on yammer. Not only will they get an email about a new post, but if they
have it installed on a mobile device, they will also get a notification.

How has it helped my organization?

It only allows for global communication, but that requires people to use it as well

What needs improvement?

Microsoft has to decide what to do with this product for the business. Without every business committing to 365, Yammer is a separate application and does not tie into Skype for Business or SharePoint 2013 and previous versions.

If MS could somehow incorporate Yammer to SharePoint and Skype for Business, then it would have a lot more uses and be easier for users to take advantage of.

Yammer is very basic. They have made very minor improvements to it. It does not hold up when comparing it to what other social media apps can do. Using it for a business without all of the other functionality really limits what you can do with it.

MS made us plenty of promises for Yammer and have not delivered. There is a good chance we will be done using it before the year is up.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for about two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I did not encounter any issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I did not encounter any issues with scalability.

How are customer service and technical support?

It is typical Microsoft support, i.e, not very helpful.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We currently use SharePoint. However, the two apps are not tied together.

How was the initial setup?

The installation was straightforward.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Read the fine print. That goes for all MS licensing for an enterprise.

What other advice do I have?

It is a great communication tool, but if you have too many ways to communicate, then this may be a burden. It is also difficult with users who are already using Facebook, LinkedIn, Skype for Business, SharePoint, Twitter, etc.

Allows everyone within the organization to have a voice.

What is most valuable?

The ability to easily communicate and engage with the entire organization is my favorite feature, as it allows everyone within the organization to have a voice.

How has it helped my organization?

It is especially valuable for multi-site and multi-region organizations. It allows for input, feedback, and discourse regardless of where the users are.

What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement in the customization and administration aspects of the product. Being able to edit posts with a revision history is a long sought-after feature.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used this solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have never experienced any major stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

As the product is a hosted solution, the scalability from an infrastructure perspective in non-existent. However, there can be some hiccups in scaling the usage to different sites or regions, i.e., if they do not know how to best use and harness the power of Yammer.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support is outstanding, and the Yammer team is open and responsive on issues, feedback, and suggestions.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to Yammer, the go-to collaboration for the enterprise was generally SharePoint team sites.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is bundled with all the Office 365 levels, and is an invaluable part of the package.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at other solutions including HipChat, Campfire and Teambox.

What other advice do I have?

If you're a business that has Office 365, then utilizing Yammer should be a no-brainer. I'd recommend allowing users to create groups as they see fit, but it may be worth setting up the naming and branding standards when doing so. This ensures, that regardless of where the users go on Yammer, they'll have similar experiences across all the groups.

A scalable tool beneficial for making overall communication within an organization easy
Pros and Cons
  • "It was a stable solution...It was a highly scalable solution considering it was used in a very big company."
  • "I faced some issues with Yammer's mobile app when I shifted from Android to iPhone, and it got a little bit tricky to use it on an iPhone, which took away some of my time."

What is our primary use case?

I used Yammer for crowdsourcing and group discussions. If we want to volunteer ourselves to be a part of certain groups that the company wants to discuss with, for, let's say, some volunteering activities or to share some complaints.

How has it helped my organization?

The benefits I experienced using Yammer stemmed from the ease of communication since everyone in the company used to get notifications. The overall communication within the organization was easy with Yammer. The group creations and such related stuff were easy to maneuver and use.

What needs improvement?

There is not much to choose from when it comes to the verification part of Yammer, especially if the clear instruction documentation is clear. If the instruction document is unclear it could be an issue. Fortunately, the technical team in our company was very clear on the instructions on how to use the tool. Even if we had an issue, it was only once when it came to the authentication part, but Yammer was very prompt in resolving the issues related to authentication and the mobile app. There wasn't much of an issue for me with Yammer.

In Yammer, mobile app onboarding has certain shortcomings and can be improved. I faced some issues with Yammer's mobile app when I shifted from Android to iPhone, and it got a little bit tricky to use it on an iPhone, which took away some of my time. The aforementioned area can be improved. Though the resolution for the issue related to the tool took some time, it got resolved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have experience with Yammer. I used Yammer six months ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It was a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It was a highly scalable solution considering it was used in a very big company.

More than 10,000 users were there for Yammer in my previous company.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously worked with BambooHR. There was one more tool that I worked with, but I can't recall its name.

I prefer Yammer over BambooHR. Yammer has a much better interface than BambooHR, making it easy for me to do certain searches easily. With Yammer, it's much easier when it comes to doing a task, group creations, and group discussions.

How was the initial setup?

The company did the initial setup, so I didn't have an issue accessing the tool.

The solution is deployed on the cloud.

What other advice do I have?

There wasn't any maintenance required for Yammer from my end.

To those planning to use Yammer, I can say that it is fun to work with because it's easy to maneuver while being quite understandable for a layman who hasn't used any enterprise applications. It's quite easy to understand, considering that it provides indications to users on where to go and where to find something.

There are some features that I don't recall but feel could be improved.

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

All parts of the organisation can share ideas and best practices.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the ability to reach all parts of the organisation to share ideas and best practices.

How has it helped my organization?

Getting people to first share their ideas, and then for others to then respond and help out has been a key feature of our Yammer usage.

What needs improvement?

The ability to edit posts can be frustrating for some. The versioning control could also be better. Some of these issues have to do with training and changing entrenched behaviours.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using the product since June 2014.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability is pretty good and you can 'optimise' suggested solutions like video size and definition for your own network capabilities.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not encountered any scalability issues, except for taxonomy and groups admin but that is a good problem to have.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very good; I only require minimal support from my internal team.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had Jive and switched for a couple of reasons: interoperability with other systems and a switch to a more easy to use and understand system. The translation feature is incredibly useful for a multilingual company like ours, especially with the Asian language coverage.

How was the initial setup?

Setup was relatively straightforward, with normal provisions for single sign on and governance. The complex part was the migration of content from the old system to the new, which required an enormous amount of effort.

Plan carefully and inform your users and power users straightforwardly and openly about the changes.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing as part of the wider deal should be considered, as well as getting value for money when reaching out to external parties.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are not evaluating other options at this stage; our initial evaluation occurred when we set out on this process in 2011.

What other advice do I have?

Understand the limitations and embrace them.

I don't address those directly as it does enhance the notion that this space is where you come to get work done and not focus on the small things like typos. If it is bad enough then delete the post and re type. Versioning control can be dealt with by the Out of the box tolls incorporated in word etc now.

Provides group conversation and document sharing capabilities. When documents are uploaded, there is no way to add metadata.

What is most valuable?

This product was intended to be a corporate social network, but it serves many purposes to different people.

  • In our organization, we have groups dedicated to outside interests like Formula 1, exciting innovations, internal projects, client projects, and knowledge sharing communities of practice.
  • The groups enable group discussion on a large scale without polluting my email inbox. I can access it at my own pace, in my own time.
  • I use Yammer to learn from others and to get access to the wealth of knowledge in our organization.
  • Primarily, the group conversations and document sharing capabilities are what we use. Some people have not adopted it, so it is only as useful as the information available, based on the user base.
  • It can be a really useful tool to avoid duplication of effort where others share things that they have done before.
  • I would say the network and reach you get with this tool is what makes it great. I get answers from people I don't know and have never met. However, I get to learn from them and 'virtually' meet them, broadening my own network.

How has it helped my organization?

Productivity can be increased as colleagues from across the world share their knowledge and experiences, reducing the need to create deliverables that may have been previously created.

It also broadens the network of an employee and gives them opportunities to learn from people in the same field. Those people would not normally be known to them and they would not have met them or gained that knowledge, without a collaborative conversation tool like Yammer.

What needs improvement?

The product itself is fine, in that it serves a purpose. The issue is in the adoption.

  • Employees need to be trained on how to use it, and to understand its benefits to encourage more adoption.
  • Without people using the tool, email traffic increases. The knowledge sharing is limited to people who they know in their local communities.
  • In addition, Yammer is just one of many tools Microsoft has for collaboration. Knowing which tool to use can be daunting.
  • With the release of teams and groups, Yammer is losing its purpose slightly.
  • I think that my rating is really around the usefulness of the product.
  • In terms of how it works as a collaborative tool, it is probably a 4. My issues with Yammer are mostly around the fact that Microsoft has included it with Office 365, but they haven't integrated it with all of their other tools.
  • The user profile is separate to the one on Delve and it has to be maintained separately.
  • When documents are uploaded to Yammer, there is no way to add metadata to it.
  • Documents are not stored in an associated SharePoint site, so it is separate to the document management solutions we have with SharePoint.
  • It is disjointed and Microsoft doesn't seem to be doing much more to integrate it. They are spending more time integrating teams instead.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Yammer since 2011/2012.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not had any stability issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not had scalability issues. However, the larger the organization and the less the adoption, the less value you get out of the tool.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

There was no tool that I used which served the same purpose. I think SharePoint had a social wall feed, which was similar on team sites, but this wasn't well adopted. Some more technical teams used Slack.

How was the initial setup?

There was no setup required when it came about. It was a case of going onto the website and signing up with your corporate email and creating a password.

Initial issues stemmed from the first person in the organization signing up, thereby becoming the network admin. This has changed now with Microsoft acquiring Yammer. It has become part of the Office 365 offering and security is much more managed.

All users get access through their corporation if they use Office 365.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We didn’t look at alternatives. It was a free tool initially and now forms part of the Office 365 offering at all licensing levels.

What other advice do I have?

  • It is all about creating a strong culture from the leadership down, where collaborating and sharing on Yammer is encouraged.
  • Adoption will be the key between success and failure of the Yammer network uptake and usefulness.
  • It also needs someone to manage it and encourage positive sharing, whilst monitoring usage.
