We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros
"We have been able to consolidate storage into Pavilion. Pavilions are our only SANs because it is a bring your own disk solution. When new drives come out, we are able to take out half of the drives in the system, put in new drives, move our VMs over to the new drives, take the other drives out, and populate those with new drives. Then, we are suddenly twice as dense as we were before. NVMe flash is only going to get denser and cheaper so we can make use of that every couple of years by just throwing newer disks into it at a fraction of the cost of a new SAN.""There's lots of flexibility in how we use the resources while also maintaining a small footprint.""The high performance is very valuable, as well as the enterprise reliability features."

"All of the capabilities of the hardware such as replication, snapshot, and the specific features are all included from the start as opposed to being on another license.""The most important thing that we had found when we purchased this product around six months back was its 100% availability and uptime.""One of the most valuable features is the ease of deployment.""In my opinion, HPE is making good progress and moving ahead with InfoSight, which is predictive analytics and artificial intelligence.""HPE Primera is scalable.""The performance is very good.""The features that I have found most valuable are the artificial intelligence for the storage inside of the software and firmware because customers do not like functionalities which require manual interruption.""The initial setup is very straightforward. It's not overly complex."

"This is a stable product that we can use for DR in production.""I've been satisfied with the level of attention I'm given when I reach out to technical support.""The installation and management are very easy.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the overall simplicity.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the price to performance ratio.""The majority of our customers find this solution simple to use.""There are plenty of features available in this solution."

Cons
"I would like to see the management layer improved.""The rail system that Pavilion uses to mount up into a standard Dell or APC cabinet extends further back than normal rails, and they cover up the zero PDU slot. So, I don't like the rail system that comes with the device. That is my biggest complaint.""In our current configuration, we can only run the line controllers in high availability, active-standby mode, whereas we would like to see active-active implemented."

"We cannot use this storage for critical applications and data.""The cost of HPE Primera could be lower.""There really isn't any aspect of the solution that needs improvement for the customer other than its price.""On the hardware side, you should have the ability to expand capacity to larger numbers.""On the controller side, I would like to see NAS capabilities.""The file server embedded in Pure, the GUI, and the tracking and reporting features are better with Pure Storage.""One of the drawbacks of the model we purchased is that it is not running NVMe drives. Even though they say that it is NVMe-ready, it is still on the SSD drives. The model that we purchased has only eight hard drives, and only the ones on the top could work on NVMe. The rest of them are still on the SSD. Its competitors, such as EMC and Pure Storage, are moving or have already moved to NVMe. HPE should improve this solution for NVMe. HPE should also improve IOs in this solution. IOs in HPE are weaker than Hitachi and Pure Storage.""This solution would be expensive for small business and it could be priced more competitively for that market."

More HPE Primera Cons »

"The product could always be faster.""I would really like to see Heterogeneous Storage Virtualization in a future release.""This solution does not support VMware VVols 2.0.""This solution can improve by providing easier migrations and better Metro features.""There are some limitations to this product because they do not have unified storage.""If they implement a backup solution directly into the OceanStor then it will be a valuable feature.""Huawei OceanStor Dorado could improve the integration, there have been some compatibility issues with some operating system functions."

Pricing and Cost Advice
"This is hardware. They have a singular array that you can populate with your own disk, or you can buy the disks through them. For controllers, you pay for the components inside of the SAN, but there is only one chassis that they work with.""The licensing fees are very reasonable."

"The price of this solution is good for medium-sized and large businesses.""It is basically in the mid-range of the price. It is not cheaper than Hitachi, but it is cheaper than Pure Storage. There are no additional costs. Everything was taken care of in the price.""From what I see, this is competitively-priced and HPE are doing their best to stay competitive.""Licensing fees are billed on a yearly basis and the cost of GreenLake service is included.""The price to capacity ratio is good.""There is only a one-time license purchase needed and no additional costs. If HP could reduce the training cost, then that would be advantageous to the seller.""I believe HPE Primera and Pure Storage are similar in price."

More HPE Primera Pricing and Cost Advice »

"The price of the solution is competitive compared to others, such as Dell EMC and Hitachi. I believe the reason they are providing a discount is they want to increase their penetration into the market.""This product is not too expensive, and the price is competitive on the market.""There are some costs in addition to the standard licensing fees, depending on the requirements.""We usually recommend our customers choose advanced licensing and enterprise companies are more inclined to choose this solution because it is more cost-effective than competitors.""There are lots of features included with this solution and some of them require additional licensing, such as creating high availability storage using a cluster."
