Most Helpful Review
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Nutanix has several unique capabilities to ensure linear scalability.
Karbon is a must-have as it drastically simplifies the deployment of Kubernetes.
The fact that there is only one interface to deploy a complete solution for maximum storage is fantastic.
Best features are around data locality, compression, and deduplication.
The most valuable feature would be the ease of deployment. That is the most significant feature for me because I've worked with multiple vendors and it's always been very complicated to install the software and get everything running.
It is a good solution and it is easy to work on their platform.
It has solid performance and provides data locality.
The level of statistical performance data that it can confirm in real-time is extremely useful. I can see what my VM’s hosts and guests are doing from a single pane of glass and identify issues before they would otherwise become apparent.
The solution’s ransomware recovery, from a security perspective, is one of the biggest features of the product. We don't have to worry about the operational complexity of air-gapped backups and can rely more on the immutability approach. It is a highly valued feature in this solution.
I would rate the solution's web interface at eight out of ten. It's just fantastic and intuitive. It's so easy to use. I've never done any formal training on Rubrik, but I was able to quickly come to grips with its capabilities.
The archiving, off-of-box, is awesome. It lets you put your data where you want it and gives you the peace of mind of having more than one copy of it. And it's smart about the way that it does the archiving. It doesn't just copy one-for-one. It does all of its processing of the deduplication and compression before it sends it off to the archive, which helps with our cloud costs.
The Live Mount is one of the most valuable features Rubrik has. It gives me an opportunity to run DR testing. For any patching or DR testing that I need to do, I'm able to run it as if it were my production system but, in reality, it's just a copy of my production system.
The fact that the API is so available to us with the playground — there's an internal and public playground — is also valuable. We can write API calls — and although I'm sure there's a way we could hurt the data — we write those calls with a lot of certainty that we won't be destroying anything. We write these API calls using really easy mechanisms and generate automation a lot faster.
Also, the web interface is really great. The design, from a user-experience standpoint, is really straightforward and easy to use... they nailed it. Usually, from the very first panel, the dashboard that you land on after login, you've got most of your functionality right around where you need it to be. You've got your new items on the left, you've got your support on the top right. Nothing really seems out of place or just stuck in someplace.
The tech support is extremely helpful.
The live mounting and compatibility of different operating systems is great.
There is a need is to be able to consume Nutanix storage from outside the cluster for other, non-Nutanix workloads.
In the licensing, it needs to be clear about features because it is not clear whether Flow is integrated or not.
They have offered some new features that I have not deployed so I assume that these issues might have been addressed already, but, at my time there was a networking problem.
We could always use a performance upgrade, or simplified management.
If they can simplify the software slightly for the installation, that would make all the difference.
If we can have certified compatibility with other companies, such as Oracle, then it would let us know that they function correctly together.
I would like to see a fuller integration with the public cloud. It would help the user enter the hybrid cloud infrastructure.
Regarding third-party backup solutions, the only agentless option is Commvault, which is expensive, complex, and requires intensive vendor training.
There is room for improvement through a further extension of their Office 365 backup platform. In addition, it's still a bit cost-prohibitive to backup NAS. Those would be the two primary areas for improvement.
We would like to be able to do granular restores directly from Exchange. Also, more granular management of VM backups would help.
The deployment and configuration of the backup service is something that could be streamlined a little bit, particularly when you're trying to do a SQL workload. You have to install a backup service on the server. You only have to do it once and then you're done, but you have to do that on every server that you want to protect.
[A] feature that the product can improve on is being able to restore Active Directory at a more granular level. For example, it would be good if we could restore actual memberships for users instead of the entire server.
I have a personal want which might not necessarily make sense with Rubrik as a company or Rubrik as a software, but it'd be really nice if they could also handle things like item-level backups and restores of Active Directory objects and DNS and DCP objects.
Its cost is high.
I would like to have a built-in index searching ability of files/system files within the Rubrik interface to determine if a file or item exists, rather than just recovering it, and then doing a search for the file afterwards.
Global management of multiple systems is lacking, as is reporting across multiple installed units.
Pricing and Cost Advice
Pricing varies greatly between license and editions.
They should lower the price. If they did they would fall into a more competitive market because the price does scare a lot of potential customers away when they get the quote.
There are a lot of features included with Nutanix that cost a lot with other companies.
I don't feel that I am receiving the performance which I am paying for.
Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you.
Licensing depends on the features needed.
Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified.
Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support.
We do perpetual licensing... It was all based on the amount of storage we needed to use. We did a cost analysis compared to Tivoli and it was in line with other solutions.
We pay yearly and it's based on the number of bricks.
It is a great value, but its cost is still a bit high.
The product is not cheap, but for good reason. It simply works and is very fast.
Rubrik is not cheap. Hopefully, you can archive your data on cheap storage to keep the investment minimal.
The cost was less than our previous provider, and this is a much better product.
